New Book, We need to consider

Quote from new book by Ian O'Connor called Belichick: The Making of the Greatest Football Coach of All Time

The Brain was not interviewed for this book and asked his friends not to contribute.

The media is missing the true story lines and discussing whiny Brady wanting a Divorce.  Boring.  They will continue to promote the false narrative about Brady being the GOAT.

A few things that made me laugh:

1.  “Belichick was angry at Brady, according to people in the Patriots organization. He was angry at Brady because he had serious doubts about the quarterback’s denial and because this crisis was the last thing the coach needed. Belichick had taken the full hit on Spygate, even though Brady and others benefitted from the information gained through the illegal videotaping. The coach knew his legacy couldn’t weather another damaging ‘gate.’ If Spygate belonged to Belichick, Deflategate was going to belong to Brady.’’

Another Quote.
“ ‘I was really unhappy with Robert [Kraft]’s statement after the Deflategate case was settled,’ said one high-ranking executive with a rival team. ‘He went too far questioning the integrity of people in the league office . . . Of course they deflated the footballs. They’re drinking the Kool-Aid [in New England], but there’s nobody outside of New England who believes they didn’t do it. I think some people have been sent to the electric chair on less circumstantial evidence than there was in this case. You’re telling me that two equipment guys did this to the balls, with a Super Bowl trip on the line, without one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time being aware of it?’’

Someone please tell Butthurt Brady and his legion of drones that every QB that discussed it said you would have known immediately if balls were flat. Not to mention that TB12 sends hundreds of text to the two equipment employees involved then trashes the phone.
Guilty! and like Serena the other day you were caught cheating

2. This quote speaks for itself.  Again Belichick was not interviewed.

“A number of [Patriot] coaches thought Belichick’s system elevated Brady, not the other way around. The general feeling among staff members, said one assistant, wasn’t that the Patriots Way would make Super Bowl quarterbacks out of all 32 starters. ‘But if you gave us any of the top 15, we could do it,’ he said. ‘I don’t think the coaches view Tom as special as everyone else in football does. Mr. Kraft thinks Tom is the greatest gift, but the coaches don’t.’ ’’

3. Bill's college Lacrosse teammate discussed how the Brain devised a way to alter his stick illegally and fix it immediately if the refs asked to check it.

“He told me how to use an illegal lacrosse stick. If you ain’t cheatin’, you ain’t trying. It doesn’t surprise me, or wouldn’t at all, if he tried every advantage he could to win an athletic contest.’’

1975 Quote from Colts secretary.
“Billy had the responsibility of sending game film to that week’s opposing team. And if the films were supposed to be delivered by Tuesday, sometimes they didn’t arrive until Wednesday. Kilcullen was the one fielding phone calls from angry, shouting coaches who demanded to know where their game films were. ‘It drove me freakin’ nuts,’ she said. Kilcullen would try to get Billy on the phone, but he dodged her calls.

4.  Bill the Brain
He reported gave his assistants film of draft prospect named Rodney Spinks, of course it was the wrong name and school listed. All of the Cleveland coaches barring one didn't like the kid.  One was quoted as saying he liked him and he looked like Leon Lett.
It was Leon Lett.

5. Bill the Bully  Kraft made the Brain keep Troy Brown in 2007

The Brain Did Not play him in 18 of the 19 games that year.

6. Bill the person

$100.00 handshakes to his assistants in Cleveland.

Barry Sanders

If you ever want to just have a feel good moment.

Youtube, Barry Sanders.

I still am in awe over how many tackles he would break.

Because he was the most elusive player that we have ever seen, I just had forgotten how strong he was.

Simply the best.

World Golf Rankings- Just Silly.

This weeks change in the World Golf Rankings made me do a double take.

Considering Koepka passed DJ in the rankings when DJ has twice as many PGA wins (8) in two years as Keopka (4) has in his PGA career.  I needed a reminder on the ranking system.

  1. Justin Rose
  2. Brooks Koepka
  3. Dustin Johnson
  4. Justin Thomas
  5. Rory McIlroy
  6. Francisco Molinari
Wins since September 2016 a 2 year span, then list wins in last year.

  1. Justin Rose-         4 WINS:         (2018) 1 PGA Win, (2017) 1 PGA Win 2 European Wins
  2. Brooks Koepka-  4 WINS:      (2018)  2 PGA Majors, (2017) 1 PGA Major, 1 Japanese Win
  3. Dustin Johnson - 7 WINS:     (2018)  3 PGA Wins (2017) 4 PGA Wins  (Sept 11,2016) 1 PGA Win   (Last win rolled off this week.)
  4. Justin Thomas -  8 WINS      (2018)  2 PGA Wins (2017) 5 PGA Wins 1 Major (2016 after Oct) 2 PGA Wins.
Confusing?
  1. The rankings use two years of results.
  2. They earns points based on how high you finish in a tournament.
  3. If a tournament field is strong, total points rise and lower for weaker field.
  4. The points a player earns in a tournament are counted, in full, for 13 weeks. Then the value decreases by about 1.09 percent per week for the remaining 91 weeks, diminishing gradually until the 105th week
  5. Each player's total points are added, divided by his total events played,
Starts seemed to be a major factor or so I thought.. Wrong, maybe for Thomas.
Starts and Avg Pts earned.
    1. Justin Rose 44            10.24
    2. Brooks Koepka 42     10.2
    3. Dustin Johnson 44     10.13
    4. Justin Thomas 49        9.57
    5. Rory McIlroy 42         7.29
    6. Francesco Molinari 50 7.2.6
The strength of field average during current year is by far and away the leading category.

I don't want to say the majors are overrated, but............

For the record, during 2018 the most points gained looks much different.

1. Bryson Dechambeau 342.29
2. Dustin Johnson         310.57
3. Brooks Koepka         295.57
4. Justin Thomas           293.78
5. Franesco Molinari     291.78
6. Justin Rose               285.46
7. Rory                         269.57

Golf- Iron Loft changes and one-Length Irons

I
(The last two listed in the chart are one length irons and this chart is from their website.)

As you can see, the loft has changed drastically in the past decade.

With quality golfers a 1/2 inch and 4 degrees of loft change usually equates to 12 yards of distance.
I pulled the specs on my clubs from High School and College.   1979 (I think) Wilson Staff FG17.  PW was 50 degrees and 35 inches and the 5 iron was 37.25 inches.

  • The weight of this brand of one length is each head at 265 grams per head.
  • This is a 7 or 6 iron weight.
  • The Sterling one-length model is at 274gram or 8 to 9.
  • Bryson was using 280 grams with Cobra.
  • An avg PW weighs 292 grams. These vary slightly
  • Subtract 7 grams per club going up to Drivers witch weight around 200g.

  • Avg Length of PW has been 35.5 inches for a few years,
  • You will normally cut the shafts 1/2 increment longer as you go up.
  • King Cobra one-length is 37.5.  (Bryson uses this length.)
  • Consider 1/2 in length adding 1.5 yds of carry with same wt and head.

An avg PW weighs 292 grams. These vary slightly
Subtract 7 grams per club going up to Drivers at around 200g.

A quarter weighs 5.7 grams as a point of reference.
The shaft discussion would take a much longer discussion.

Lee Smith Article

http://www.designatedwriters.com/classic/lee-arthur-smith/
You will probably remember listening to JJ's tapes from this interview in the pressbox.

I thought you would enjoy.

Snickers and Family.

Aggies are Number 1 in Money, Horns drop to 2.

This is the chart from Forbes yesterday.
SEC has 5 of top 10 and 9 of top 16.

Alabama spends much more than the other schools. As they actually tied Michigan at 3rd.

J

LSU

Since, I am in the mood and an article published yesterday reads like some of our blogs from Les Miles era, lets face the truth.

LSU has not changed at all.

This is from article:
  • 110th out of 128 upper level football schools nationally
  • 14th out of 14 Southeastern Conference schools in total offense at 315.5 yards a game.
  • 113th nationally and 13th in the SEC in pass offense with 139.5 yards a game.

How can the AD and President still have a job?
Seriously, O wasn't even the best defensive coach on LSU's staff when they named him head coach.

J

Dallas

Over and over during the Garrett tenure as a coordinator or the head coach, I have steadily complained about his press conferences on his philosophical thoughts on an offensive scheme.

It has gotten to a point of just ridiculous.
I know the OC and Dak will get ripped to shreds, but this is the same offense passing game Garrett used when he killed Wade's career as a head coach.

An Example.
When the Cowboys went for 4th down and 10 at midfield.
They sent 3 Wr's and a TE run straight down the field 13 yards before 3 basically made slow curls and one cut to sideline.
The sad and disappointing part is that Carolina had a player standing directly in front of the players 10 yards downfield.  How can you not try anything tricky or with quickness. (Thats right, Exactly in front of the routes. with a safety playing center field.)

Did I mention Tavon Austin was not on the field during the last few drives!!!!!!!
He played 10 plays on offense all day.   This on the slowest team in NFL history.

6 times in last 9 games they scored 12 or less.

My old pal at TCU

Patterson never knows when to just zip the lip.

This week he has accused Urban of breaking the rules of his suspension.

Then to make it seem less serious he admits that he would cheat too.

From Espn article.
Gary Patterson says facing an Ohio State team without Urban Meyer on the sideline won’t be an advantage for TCU. He said if he was in Meyer’s position, he would communicate with the staff in the game. When I told him Meyer couldn’t, according to his suspension, Patterson joked that he would do it anyway.

I agree with Patterson for one of the few times he has spoken on national forum.
Urban Meyer would cheat and so would he!

He is so hard to pull for, I wish he would retire from TCU.

"Riff, Ram, Bah, Zoo/Lickety, Lickety, Zoo Zoo/Who, Wah, Wah, Who/Give 'em Hell, TCU!"

Willie Taggart is going to make for good press.

Instead of spending a week apologizing for pure incompetence, the new coach starts his week complaining about VTech players faking injuries on defense.

This is probably true for the couple of drives that Fla State actually had more than one first down.
This offensive genius had 2 series that lasted more than 4 plays the entire game.
Either Va Tech is the best ever or this is a bad scheme.

Let's blame Va Tech for faking injuries!!!

Ryder Cup

These teams look even to me on a European course set up with tight fairways.
The American players had solid years and are favored in France by about 2 to 1.

The promising part for the USA is the youngsters.

  • Reed, Koepka, and DJ are stout
  • Bryson maybe a superstar, but we haven't seen him interact with many people.
  • Thomas has a  3-1-1 record in Presidents Cup and is best player in world in last year.
  • Phil has played better recently but usually splits matches
  • Woods has always been a poor teammate
  •  Bubba and Fowler have never found the secret.
  • Reed led the team in 2016 followed by Phil, Jordan and Brooks.

Players with Ryder Cup Record.

  1. Dustin Johnson 6-5
  2. Justin Thomas     Rookie. No words needed.
  3. Brooks Koepka  3-1
  4. Patrick Reed  6-1-2
  5. Jordan Spieth 4-3-2
  6. Rickey Fowler 2-4-5
  7. Bubba Watson 3-8-0
  8. Webb Simpson  2-3-1
  9. Bryson DeChambeau  Rookie, maybe he will be able to handle the new Tiger personality.
  10. Phil Mickelson   18-20-7
  11. Tiger Woods      13-17-3
  12. Open. (Tony Finau is favorite but don't they need a accurate driver and putter like Kisner. )

  • Europe is loaded at the top.
  • Rory, Rose,Rahm, will be hard to beat in any format.
  • Poulter and Garcia never lose, even when they have bad years.
  • Fleetwood - I think Fleetwood has become special
  • Hatton is so fiery he may explode on the scene.
  • This leaves the unknown with Stenson and Casey who are both world class when right.
  • No special feeling from Noren or Olesen.
  • The British Open winner, Molinari,  has never shown anything.

  1. Rory McIlroy  9-6-4
  2. Francesco Molinari 0-4-2
  3. Justin Rose  11-6-2
  4. Tyrrell Hatton  Rookie  Wild Card  26 years old. 2 top 10s in Majors this year.
  5. Tommy Fleetwood  Rookie  Top 20 talent. 27 yrs old and can get hot.
  6. Jon Rahm  Rookie  Top 3 Talent.
  7. Alex Noren  Rookie  Was great in 2016 but at 36 no wins in America. Played at OKLA ST
  8. Thorbjorn Olesen Rookie - 1 win this year, average control player.
  9. Sergio Garcia    19-11-7
  10. Henrik Stenson   8-5-2
  11. Ian Poulter         12-4-2
  12. Paul Casey         3-2-4

Two terrible Ryder Cup players as captains.
I do not like Bjorn picks leaving off Thomas Pieters.

He and Rory were basically unbeatable. He only led the 2016 Cup in Points and finished 6th at the PGA.

The Furyk picks were earned, all of these guys were close.

Week 1 Football.

  1. Bama, .  Can they really be calling the same plays on the sideline when Hurts plays?
  2. Auburn-Washington-   I never trust Gus
  3. Aggies vs Clemson This Week  - I look forward to seeing what Chavis (Now Asst Head Coach) does against Dabo. (I didn't realize they also hired Notre Dames DCoor from last year, Mike Elko?)
  4. Sooners looked as good as last year,  Kyler is still a water bug in the pocket.
  5. Texas- How do you explain what has happened in Texas since Muschamp left for Florida.
  6. Norte Dame- I was unable to tell if they looked good or Michigan was bad. I lean toward Irish being a top 10 team.
  7. Harbaugh last 18 games...9-9    Herman record 7-7     So many things to say about this! Later
  8. LSU -  I do not see a change in anything in regard to the offense.
  9. Shea Patterson- The trashing of Patterson continues. He was 20-30 for 227   0TD  1 INT on a team that average 1.8yd per rush, this kid carries some negative karma.
  10. Bryce Love- 18 carries 29 yards against San Diego State.  Maybe Shaw should slow down on the TV shows and focus on schemes.
  11. Willie Taggart hire at Florida State still confuses me.
  12. The Mullen Era has begun. The SEC will be a bear with GA and FLA in the East.
  13. Robinson looked good at TCU.
  14. Sumlin's offensive genius rep is taking another hit it seems.  AZ looked bad against BYU.

It is good to have football back!
