Remembering an Epic Winning Streak

Allen opened the 2012 season in their new (and infamous) $60mm stadium against Southlake Carroll and dominated 24-0.  They were coming off of 3 straight seasons of losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs after having won their first state championship in 2008.  They were becoming a brand, but the trophy case was sparse.  What was coming could hardly be anticipated.  57 games without a loss, the 2nd longest streak in the history of Texas HS football.  I saw many of them, including most of the important ones and it was the most sustained fun I’ve ever had pulling for a sports team.  We were lucky in that the streak coincided with Shelby’s time in high school, so we could become invested in the team, having known many of the players, parents, coaches, and cheerleaders.  Here are the most memorable games from my perspective:

Prelude: the last loss before the streak came on 9/28/12 on the road, in the rain against the Coppell Cowboys.  Leading late, Allen surrendered the tying score and lost it 27-24 in OT.  Coach Westerberg would make a QB change to an unproven sophomore named Kyler Murray.  It would be the last loss for over 3 years.

Number 5 – rival Plano Sr. High came to play on the last night of the regular season, scoring late and going for 2 points to win.  Allen batted down the throw to hold on 35-34 and head into the playoffs on shaky ground.

Number 9 – it was time to take Allen seriously when they dominated undefeated and loaded Skyline 37-17 in the regional finals.

Number 10 – state semi-finals against 14-0 and #1-ranked DeSoto, a team they had never faced.  Allen clicked on all cylinders from the opening bell, racing to a 42-14 3rd quarter lead and cruised home to a 15-point win.

Number 11 – the 2nd state title came against a big, physical, and game Houston Lamar.  Unable to sustain drives, Allen used 5 big plays to win it 35-21, the biggest being an 80-yard kickoff return with the score tied at 21 late in the 3rd.

Number 12 – the coaching staff unleashed the new and improved Kyler Murray, bombing Southlake Carroll into submission 49-27.  Doing it on the road in front of the hated Southlake fans made it all too sweet.

Number 13 – a workmanlike 39-20 win over eventual state champ Cedar Hill.  It was a ho-hum comfortable win against one of the top 5 teams in the state.

Number 16 – revenge against Coppell 31-10 in front of the homecoming Allen crowd.  The defense wasn’t playing around, they were a serious bunch holding Coppell to 3 until the subs came in in the 4th.

Number 23 – 35 degrees and sleeting in the Cotton Bowl, Allen routed talented Mesquite Horn 42-14.  Shelby said it was the coldest she's ever been.

Number 25 – my appreciation of this group multiplied when they traveled south in an ice storm to take on undefeated Spring Westfield in the regional finals.  Allen took no band, no cheerleaders, no fans except a few loyal parents and facing a good team with no friendly support, they were never threatened 48-13.

Number 26 – the most memorable of them all; the 2nd straight semi-final match with DeSoto, who was now ready for the stage.  On a brutally cold, cloudy, and blustery day in Mesquite, DeSoto dominated the middle of the game and took a 35-20 lead early in the 4th.  Playing into the wind, Murray hit on a 70-yard post pattern to give Allen life.  The defense rose up and Murray quickly drove for the tying touchdown and 2-point conversion.  Then fate stepped in, a terrible Allen punt hit an innocent DeSoto player, giving the red-hot Murray the chance to win it.  With only 30 seconds remaining, he sprinted in from 24 yards out to add to the legend.  Allen 42-35.

Number 27 – the anti-climactic 3rd state title against an overmatched Pearland 63-28.  For the season, Allen played 16 teams, routed 15 of them and raised the bar to a whole new level.

Number 28 – Allen unveiled a new young defense and it wasn’t pretty, beating Denton Guyer 55-41 behind Murray.

Number 29 – Allen’s first out of state matchup, against South Carolina champ Dutch Fork, was more than they bargained for.  In a wild shootout, the Eagles prevailed 58-53.  I remarked to everyone “this team has no chance to win state with that defense”.  It would have to be all Murray, all the time.

Number 36 – Murray and Plano West tailback 5-star Soso Jamabo were invited to the Under Armor All-American game before the start of another shootout, 70-41.

Number 39 – yet another playoff matchup with DeSoto and another classic.  A weird defensive battle sprung up and found Allen trailing 22-14 in the 4th.  Once again Murray to the rescue, as Allen scored the final 11, including a field goal with 0:00 remaining.  The worst passing game I ever saw Murray play, but he ran for 200 to compensate.

Number 40 – these playoffs would be different.  Arlington Martin was ready but Murray ran for 200 for the 2nd straight game and Allen scored an impossible 50 2nd-half points to win it 69-54.

Number 41 – the first matchup with Euless Trinity since 2011 and as always a brutal contest of wills.  Murray’s only game against the Trojans and he was incredible.  But the small, leaky defense trailed 27-20 at the half and appeared to be done.  In what I can call the gutsiest win in the streak, that beleaguered group pitched a 2nd half shutout and the Eagles won another one with a last minute field goal 30-27.

Number 42 – state semi-finals and another loaded Skyline team; the pattern continued as Allen fell behind 28-10 in the 3rd.  This would be Murray’s finest hour in my mind.  Against what many called the state’s best 6A defense, he just absolutely took over.  In the next 20 minutes of clock time, Murray produced an eye-popping 42 points to lead Allen back to the finals, 52-34.  For the night, he totaled 406 passing and 115 rushing.

Number 43 – the score was worse than the game, but Cypress Ranch wasn’t quite in the same league as Allen, falling 47-16.  Murray walked into the sunset 42-0 as a starter with 3 titles.

Number 44 – last year’s leaky defense turned into a strength as Allen opened with Guyer and cruised 48-16.  The first post-Murray team would be defensive-minded.

Number 48 – Flower Mound Marcus came to play and forged a 28-28 tie before falling 38-28.

Number 55 – the annual ritual continued vs. DeSoto.  Despite an off-season, 6-5 DeSoto played out of their minds trying to break the Allen jinx.  A late touchdown should have tied it, but the extra point found the goal post.  Driving to win it in the last minutes, they reached the Allen 38 but were stymied on 4 straight downs, the last on a sack at mid-field as Allen hung on 41-40.

The end – the streak made it to 57 as Allen faced nemesis Todd Dodge and his Austin Westlake Chaparrals in the semi-finals 12/11/15.  I didn’t make the game, but Allen met their match in a Texas-bound QB and a defense that blitzed often and didn’t allow a TD until the 4th.  Soundly beaten and no miracles left to pull out, it was over, 23-17.

Postscript – it was hard to digest after over 3 years’ worth of wins.  But streaks come and they go.  Eventually a bad night, a coach with a plan, all the breaks go the other way.  It’s amazing that it could go so well for 57 games in a row.  Our family had so much fun as the vast Eagle Nation traveled all over the state and watched routs and high drama.  I saw the best high school player I ever expect to see.  I saw precision and dominance, and luck and comebacks.  The average margin of victory for 57 games was right at 30 points per game.  A 19-0 record against these programs: DeSoto, Cedar Hill, Arlington Martin, Denton Guyer, Flower Mound Marcus, Pearland, Skyline, Southlake Carroll, Euless Trinity.  22 straight playoff wins.  Allen will have to rebuild next year, graduating I believe 15 starters and I’ll never be as connected or invested again as Shelby and her class move on.  But I will re-live many of those nights and afternoons when we saw the best of high school football and all things that go with it and I’ll remember the Eagle fans with every kick off cry “Allen Eagles – Fight – Fight – Fight!”

Timing of last Post on Rory

When I wrote the previous post it was Friday morning and Rory was coming off a -2, 70 first round. He made 6 birdies two bogeys and a Double for his 70.
(This is at a venue that will host the PGA in 2017.)

That AWE factor showed up the next 36 holes, he had 16 birdies and no bogies to take the lead in tournament with a 67-61 since my post.  He shot 61 Saturday and the longest putt he made was 15 feet, he hits it so CLOSE.

He is currently 21 under with 4 holes to play.
He has a record 26 birdies already this week and will break the tournament scoring record, most birdies, single round record with a display of ridiculous power with a driving average going into today that is hovering around 329 yards.
(By the way, he just hit a 5 wood to the fringe on 14, a par 4 at 303 yards.)

Lets use his playing partners quote:

“It was phenomenal,” said MacKenzie, a two-time PGA Tour winner. “He overpowers the course. He’s way better than me.
He’s just a little bit better than everybody.
“Guys like Jordan Spieth and Rickie (Fowler) are totally awesome, but when this guy hits it, you know who’s hitting it.
“The long ball is impressive but he’s got the touch to back it up. When this guy’s on, he just loads (on his backswing) better than everybody. He’s just stronger, a little more physically gifted.”
“I think he’s going to become the Tiger Woods.
I’m just glad he doesn’t play every week."

Rory

I have spent so much time watching some of the best young golfers in America during last couple of months that I feel honored.
But only one person still gives me the AWE factor when I turn on the TV.
Rory, is currently the only one in the world that can win without putting lights out.

His win at the Match play was insane,  summary of last two holes before the championship final.

Down 2 with 2 to play- 2 birdies in a row. win extra holes- 3 under last 3 holes
Next round 1 down two to play- 2 Birdies extra holes- 3 under last 3 holes.
Next round One down two to play- Birdie, Eagle  Gotcha.  4under last 3 holes.
Gary Woodward comments on Rory in Championship, He was like a shark smelling blood and he just flipped a switch and changed.

Is Rory on a level with Jack, Byron, Snead, Hogan, Jones and Woods.  No of course not!
But goodness, he hits it so close to the hole so often it is downright ridiculous.

It is just the simplest game that he plays. He literally lost the Masters because he took two weeks off in my opinion.  Yes, Jordan was great and I wanted him to win, but Rory Shot 15 under in last 45 and missed so many short putts during that last 36.

It is like no one we have ever seen.
Norman was the closest in pure dominance of hitting a golf ball.
Rory is a small guy at 5'9" and 165lbs (even after the weight training and NO he is not longer since he started the lifting) but he has the smoothest tempo in his transition to his downswing for accurate power that we have ever seen. I can never forget the Titleist people talking about his hip speed turn at over 717 mph.  A number that is off the charts for any professional, the big hitters usually run in the mid 500 mph area. In golf terms this means he also has to send his arms and hands out at 200 mph faster that the average pro.  He is just a freak.

The downside or so to speak, his human side, is like Phil who would run hot and cold and seemed completely lost at times, but always seemed to treat people kindly.

Rory seems to lose interest during the round like he did last week at the TPC, He even commented that he lost interest because it was basically boring playing safe golf.  Something that Woods has always been able to master with his type of mental makeup or lack there of.  Tigger was always focused on his game and never seemed to take a mental break nor treat people as humans, (Sidebar: is there a correlation here with the other great athletes who were just as big of Asses.)  Woods did quit playing courses that didn't fit his game, I hope Rory avoids this path for the sake of Golf.

Tigger, and only during the Harmon years, did he ever came approach the power and accuracy that Rory shows effortlessly. At his best, he hit so many shots close like Rory does, he was just a better putter and short game wizard.  Rory will never miss as many fairways by 5 yards as Tigger did.

Spieth on the other hand is the ultimate professional and seems to be focused at all times. That new putting confidence is just incredible and he should be America best for years to come. (Unless Dustin Johnson goes to Dave Pelz short game and putting, because he is just too powerful.) Spieth has plenty of power and is definitely studying the courses more effectively than Rory.  His bag seems to have been adjusted to add elevation to his long shots to match the freaks like Rory, which should help his goal of getting to number 1 in the world eventually.   Rory travels far too much to win more than Spieth if Jordan is close in talent.

Christian Laetner

I see that on March 15, Espn is doing a show.

"I Hate Christian Laetner"

This will be fun to watch and I hope they show how truly great of a college player he was.  I am not sure many people deserved the last shot to win a game more than Laetner.

J.

Woods

Since, I trashed Woods and his behavior, while taking up for him with the latest rumors, I thought I would share an amazing stat.

Only Seve at 22 won ten titles on the European tour at younger age than Tigger at 24.  He did this and was never playing there full time.  Rory just won his 10th at 25.

He is third on the all time European win list with 40, Only Seve with 50 and Langer with 42 have more. I am unsure of the number of starts he has had on the Euro tour, but last November it was 121 with 40 wins a wining percentage of over 33% when he teed it up.

Drugs, accusations of cheating and bad behavior toward fans, media and people in general doesn't change the fact that he was greater at his sport than anyone during his time.

J.

PS.
Yes, his current golf problem is mental,  He practices and plays practice rounds that people watch without the drama.
When he grows up and accepts the age and mistakes he has made with his swing and short game,  I expect him to win more tournaments.

I am sick of watching him hit a bad shot and immediately grab a part of his body.
, Phil is playing with a disease that cripples people and Hogan literally would not be cleared to play these days and still competed and won.

Cowboys-Dez and DeMarco

I like the way Dallas is handling the signings with the superstars.

With the rumors of abusive tape being floated about Dez, why sign him to long term right now. If he is not getting suspended, they can continue with the contract negotiations. Without a doubt, I hope they keep Dez long term.

If DeMarco can demand as much money as is being floated from someone else, the Boys have no chance anyway.  All they will do is low ball him and upset the fan base.  I never expected Murray to be back with all of the other needs and cap problems.  I must say that a signing in Indy is intriguing if they can rebuild that terrible offensive line.

Honda Classic

I might as well start with a week in golf that was a black eye for the sport.

  1. Rory- Wow, he comes in with a run of averaging hitting 86% of GIR and seven straight tournaments with no worse than second place.  Golf is a crazy sport, he and his playing partners were terrible.
  2. Reed- Definitely the best American now.  Until he collapsed today with the lead he had the most under par rounds consecutively on the tour. Dude can putt and is so frank in interviews that the prudish golf media doesn't know what to do with him.
  3. Phil- He is putting so poorly, but with the advancement in Technology he stirred it up with his distance.  For the first time ever, he can actually swing hard without the backspin killing him.
  4. Poulter- I don't care for the guy, but he hit 5 balls in the water in the final round and still nearly won. Crazy tournament.
  5. Johnson- Fresh back from his recent break on tour under drug test rumors, he was playing great until being paired with Rory.  He may be the best American in two months.
  6. Woods- Everyone should know that I think he is a terrible example for anyone to mimic outside of his incredible talent,  But, when a journey man pro named Dan Olsen accuses Tigger of failed drug test (“It’s not testosterone, but it’s something else,”)   Then he goes on and says that the reason Tigger never gave fans a golf ball was that he was using an illegal ball.    Crazy!.  The PGA and Woods camp deny all of this.  You know, I absolutely think he used Roids, but this is out of line.  He eventually said that Woods will be the Lance Armstrong of Golf.   I do not want to be correct about this.

The Calipari Effect

Saw this stunning number this week:  John Calipari has placed 31 players in the NBA during his 3-stop college coaching career, with 3 #1 overall selections.  Who would you consider the best of the bunch?  Here's my shot at it:

  1. Anthony Davis
  2. Derrick Rose
  3. John Wall
  4. Marcus Camby
  5. Demarcus Cousins
  6. Tyreke Evans
  7. Eric Bledsoe
  8. Brandon Knight
  9. Terrence Jones
  10. Patrick Patterson

Petrino Gives Coaches a Bad Name

You may have seen this story floating around in newspapers and various websites.  College football's chief scumbag Bobby Petrino pulled a long-standing scholarship offer from a kid in South Carolina just 2 days before signing day.  I happen to have seen this kid, Matt Colburn, because he played Allen this past season and as he was piling up 250 yards I pulled him up on Rivals and noted that he was committed to Louisville, back in September of 2014.  Then, after all these months, he finds out 2 days before signing day that Louisville is overbooked and doesn't have a place for him.

I am truly amazed that this sleazeball Petrino continues to get to ply his lack of morals in a major position.  Let's recap: pursued and interviewed for a job that was not vacant (Auburn), left the Falcons during the season for another job, put his mistress on the payroll at Arkansas, and still he rolls on.  How could you let your kid go to a place where this guy is in charge?  I've got to think at some point his lack of character and integrity will start to impact his credibility with recruits, coaches, AD's, etc.  Everyone wants to win, but do want this baggage at your school?

DFW High School Coaching Update

It's been an interesting off-season for DFW high school football programs.  Clearly the top programs in DFW over the past decade have been:  Allen, Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Skyline, Southlake, and Trinity.  All of these except Southlake had some coaching drama going on this winter.....

  • Allen - longtime offensive coordinator Jeff Fleener left to become a head coach in the San Antonio area
  • Cedar Hill - Texas/Charlie Strong offered Head Coach Joey McGuire a spot on their staff.  He mulled it for about 10 days and decided to stay, mostly because his son is the likely QB at Cedar Hill for the next 2 years
  • DeSoto - Head Coach Claude Mathis left for a spot on the new SMU staff under Chad Morris.  They have since promoted their offensive coordinator to replace Mathis.
  • Skyline - Head Coach Reginald Samples left to head up Duncanville.  He cited the much better resources he will enjoy at suburban Duncanville vs. what he had at DISD Skyline.
  • Trinity - Head Coach Steve Lineweaver retired after winning 3 state championships at Trinity, taking them to another final, and winning state once at 3A Commerce.  Trinity also replaced him with their offensive coordinator.
All of these could present the opportunity for other programs to get in the mix for supremacy in DFW.

Allen's Greg Little #1 Recruit for 2016

One of the reasons for Allen's latest championship were the 2 bookend offensive tackles, Bobby Evans, a 4-star going to Oklahoma, and Greg Little, the first player to achieve 5-star recognition for the 2016 class, and now ranked as the #1 player in America by 247 Sports.  He's already taken the fun out of the chase by committing to A&M.  The Eagles should have their 1st 1st-round NFL draft pick this spring with A&M offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi, and Greg Little could follow him in 3 years.  My daughter has known Greg for years, and he plays basketball as well as football, giving you an idea of his footwork.

LSU Football - Talent vs. Results

With the completion of signing day this week, it got me thinking about the state of LSU football again.  I thought I would do some research and compare the Tigers with the only other team that has had access to the same talent level during the past few seasons, the Tide.  You know that I've been thinking that Miles is driving the bus off a cliff.  This kind of summarizes  my fears.  Looking at the 7 football seasons since LSU won the 2007 national title...........

Talent in:  Obviously bringing in talent is job #1 for college coaching staffs.  I looked at the Rivals recruiting results since the end of the 2007 season.  Miles and staff have recruited well.  Our average Rivals rank in this time is 7.4 as we've finished 11-2-6-6-18-6-2-8.  Consistently in the top 10 with a large share of 4 and 5-stars.  Alabama during this time has dominated, finishing in the top 5 each year and first overall 6 times: 1-1-5-1-1-1-1-2.  The point is we're getting the talent to contend.

Talent out:  Developing talent is in my mind the 2nd vital piece for college coaches.  Here Miles and company have been amazing.  Starting with the 2008 draft, LSU has had 48 players drafted, more than anyone, even 'Bama (41).  Miles' staff knows what they're doing in terms of putting people in the right place and teaching them how to play at that level.  Just in the last 2 years, 18 players drafted!  The NFL knows to come to Baton Rouge to find players.

Game results:  The bottom line.  Since 2007, the Tigers have produced a record of 69-23, or a 75% winning %.  More alarming, we've only had 2 top-10 AP finishes in those 7 seasons.  We've also finished unranked twice.  The AP finishes:  NR-17-8-2-14-14-NR.  The winning % the last 3 years is 72%.  These results do not equate with the talent in and out.  In contrast, the Tide have finished in the top 10 in every one of these seasons, with an 84-11 record (88%), and 3 national championships.  Their AP results:  6-1-10-1-1-7-4.

Conclusion:  Les Miles can't coach!  Seriously, we've got 2 big issues; game plan and in-game adjustments.  Miles is terrible at both.  We have unbelievably talented players trying to overcome poor game plans and generally being out-coached every Saturday.  My problem in criticizing a coach who is winning 75% of his games is that he's leaving so many wins on the table with his poor game preparation.  We are under-achieving at an epic level!  The fear I continue to have is that the talent will dry up with these poor results.  Maybe not, since the recruits see players getting drafted.  But the frustration at not contending despite all this talent is driving me crazy.

Goodbye to Mr. Cub

The baseball world lost another legendary figure last week in hall of famer Ernie Banks.  Apparently one of the all-time nice guys in baseball and universally loved, Banks of course grew up in Dallas and was the Cubs' first black player.  The first big-time power-hitting shortstop and forerunner to people like Cal Ripken and A-Rod.

Banks was only really great for about 7 years, but during that time he punched his ticket to the HOF by playing a premium defensive position and winning 2 MVP's.  After that he was fairly average and moved to 1st base but made it to 500 homers.  During those 1st 7 years, he finished in the top 6 in MVP voting 5 times, hit over 40 homers 5 times, averaged 110 RBI, and had a .556 slugging % and .910 OPS.  His MVP years were big-time:

.313 - 47 - 129
.304 - 45 - 143

All of this playing for very bad teams with little protection in the lineup.  Banks was a pioneer and a classic middle of the century hall of famer, peaking at a very high level, lasting long enough to hit a "magic" number, and being a true fan and media favorite.

NBA Player Efficiency Rankings

Time for me to take that mid-season look at player efficiency to see which players are on the rise, which are underrated, etc.  This year, 6 of the top 20 are point guards, Lebron has started to age just a bit, and your boy Westbrook has taken a big leap up the rankings, ha.  Here are the top 20 if they are playing over 25 min per game:

Anthony Davis - 31.9
Kevin Durant - 28.7
James Harden - 28.0
Russell Westbrook - 27.3
Steph Curry - 27.0
Lebron - 26.2
Demarcus Cousins - 25.8
Chris Paul - 24.9
Blake Griffin - 22.9
Klay Thompson - 22.8
Marc Gasol - 22.7
Jeff Teague - 22.5
Dwayne Wade - 22.5
LaMarcus Aldridge - 22.5
Derrick Favors - 22.4
Pau Gasol - 22.3
Nikola Vucevic - 22.2
Tim Duncan - 22.1
Damian Lillard - 22.1
Kyle Lowry - 22.0

That's a huge number for Davis and a wide lead.  Too bad the "Unibrow" doesn't play for a good team.  Notice, no Dirk, no Kobe, no Dwight Howard.  Dynamic duos: Curry/Thompson, Paul/Griffin, Durant/Westbrook, Aldridge/Lillard.  Kudos to whoever was the youth coach of Marc and Pau Gasol!

College Football Royalty - Updated

I originally posted this in 2012, and updated it in 2013.  Updating again to give OSU their newest title, painful as it is.

As a follow-up to the season I looked at the historical AP and Coaches polls and added them up.  The thing to remember is that until 1968 for AP and 1974 for Coaches, the polls were taken before the bowls, which used to be considered kind of like exhibitions or bonuses for good seasons.  Coaches polls started in 1950 and AP in 1936.  Alabama claims several championships outside of the AP or Coaches polls, which to me are totally bogus.  For instance in 1941 every poll of substance named Minnesota champion, but one obscure poll named Alabama, and they still claim it.  Also, you can make the case that they did not deserve their 1964 and 1973 championships since they lost their bowl games, or 1978 when they split with USC but lost to them in the regular season.  Regardless, I'm showing the official results of the polls below.  Whether some of these can be disputed or not, these are the royalty.  The numbers in parenthesis indicate total AP+Coaches championships and the number that were undisputed.  The asterisk indicates a split championship:

Alabama (10/7) - 1961, 1964, 1965*, 1973*, 1978*, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2012
Notre Dame (8/7) - 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1966, 1973*, 1977, 1988
Oklahoma (7/6) - 1950, 1955, 1956, 1974*, 1975, 1985, 2000
USC (7/4) - 1962, 1967, 1972, 1974*, 1978*, 2003*, 2004
Ohio St. (6/4) - 1942, 1954*, 1957*, 1968, 2002, 2014

Miami (5/4) - 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991*, 2001
Nebraska (5/3) - 1970*, 1971, 1994, 1995, 1997*
