I wonder what Bill James says about this argument? Since a position player bats 4 times per game, or 20 times every 5 games, while a pitcher is involved in roughly 30 at-bats per game. Over a season a starting pitcher is actually involved in a lot more at-bats than a position player. But the pitcher can still only affect 1 game out of every 5 while a hitter could affect them daily. I don't like it either, but food for thought.
