Another Durant Post

Yes, another Kevin Durant post from me, I can't help it.  I tuned into the Mavs/Thunder last night.  One thing I noted is that Durant immediately looked slightly bigger to me.  It could be that he finally, at 23, was able to add a little muscle in the off-season.  I've long wondered if he would ever be able to hold some weight to allow him to keep his positions on the floor.  Also, after 4 games he is shooting 57% and 47% from 3-pt., averaging 31.3.  I'm still in complete awe of what he has accomplished before his 23rd birthday, and what he may and probably will become as he enters his physical prime.

DFW Hoops Gets Punked

The big Whataburger tourney in Fort Worth this week; top 2 ranked public schools in the state, Marcus and DeSoto, plus North Crowley, Duncanville, state-ranked Richland, state-ranked Plano West.  But the show is stolen by 2 out of state schools; King HS from Milwaukee and Parkview from Little Rock will play in the finals.  Not a great result for the status of TX HS hoops.

See Them While You Can

Lest we need a reminder of life in the NFL, down goes one of the greats in history to a shredded knee at just short of 5 years in the league.  Adrian Peterson will be back, but will he ever be the same?  With a stunning combination of the size and speed of Eric Dickerson and the aggressiveness of Earl Campbell, Peterson was absolutely one of the greatest talents.  If the explosion is forever gone due to the injury, let's remember that when he went down, he had 6,752 yards in under 5 seasons with a stellar 4.8 avg per carry and a handful of the most amazing runs you will ever witness.

S

How would I rate QB's the last two years.

I had to show that I think Brees is still a top 3 QB.
Throwing that "Great" word around should be reserved for two or three people a decade.

Snub

Eli Manning in Pro Bowl over Romo?  Absurd.  There is no comparison in terms of how they've performed this year.  Tony Romo is one of the biggest lightning rods for outlandish perception I've ever seen.  I was through defending him after his early season meltdowns, but he has performed at an incredible level for most of the season.  Gosselin made the case that Stafford should have gotten the spot, but Manning?  Really?

Romo  65.4%  3,895 yds  8.0 avg  29/9  102.2
Stafford   63.7%  4,518 yds  7.5 avg  36/14  96.6
Manning   60.3%  4,587 yds  8.3 avg  26/16  90.3

Brees - Marino

Time to step on a few toes.

It is ashamed that Brees, or should I say Sean Payton, is mentioned with Marino in anything regarding throwing the football.

Brees is very accurate and works well within Payton's brilliant schemes, but lacks so many things physically with his arm.

Many people forget Marino's accuracy, it wasn't these 12yard passes into single coverage.  It was a 30yard pass with a small window while hitting people in stride.  When he needed touch passes, he had the touch.  Most impressively he was running the same offense that the rest of the NFL was running, but he could do things other QBs could not.  (His offense-two WR's in the patterns, where as Payton will have 4wrs- 15yds deeps spread across the field in 10 yards spaces.)

It is kind of like watching Alabama athletes vs Stanford athletes, you know they have the same record, but it is so obvious that one team or person is not capable of doing things that make you recognize the greatness.

Most that read this will think I am a Marino lover and Brees hater, but it is actually the opposite.

I never liked Marino teams nor pulled for him, Brees I respected and pulled for him most of his career, until he went Hollywood after Super Bowl.
Everyone knew he lack ball velocity and he struggled in an Charger offense that required timing routes with a little zip and never quit trying.  (Thus lost his job to Flutie and Rivers while having the best RB in the last decade in his backfield.)

Bree's should give half his salary to Payton for making him appear to be one of the greats in the NFL.

Marino was the best passer I have ever seen.

Radio Talk / Cowboy Coaching

Listening to the talk shows this week, the Cowboys have come under significant criticism.  Both Garrett and Ryan have been blasted on local and national shows.  I've heard Garrett mentioned as doing the worst coaching job in the league given talent and expectations, plus the 4th quarter failures.  I've heard less criticism of Ryan, but some have mentioned his failure to protect leads and the confusion that is apparent on the field at times.

One of my new favorites to listen to on the talking head circuit is Eric Mangini.  Obviously very smart and he gets his points across well.  He coached with Ryan and said he is incredibly smart and creative, but has to be reigned in at times in terms of his team's ability to grasp his ideas.  On another note, he talked this week about during his tenure with Belicheat and how they began to make a big effort at filling their roster with high character guys and feeling they could win that way.  Kind of interesting.

Back to the Cowboys, this week is shaping up as a referendum on the entire franchise from Romo, to Garrett, to management, to the roster, the whole 9 yards.  After the game failures this year, if we lose a 2-game lead with 2 to play and fail to make the playoffs, it will just be downright nasty around here.

For me, I no longer have faith that they can rise to a big challenge.  Too many breakdowns in the defensive backfield, to many hits on Romo, too many red zone failures.  It hurts me to watch.  Just so average and so far from the stature that this franchise used to enjoy.  I will pull hard and hope for the kind of win that could propel the franchise forward into next year.  But these past few years make it hard for me to have faith.

Romo-Vick Comparison

I spent a lot of time around young kids and I amazed at the respect they give Vick as a QB.
So, I thought a comparison in the careers was appropriate.
Vick  94 games started  5206 rushing yards. 33 TDs. Sacks 240- Sack Yards 1457yard.   (33 lost Fumbles. )
Romo 74 games 458 rushing 4 TDs. Sacks 138 849 Sack Yards.   (18 Lost Fumbles.)

Vick Passing- 55.9 % comp... 17284yds 106 TD 71int QB Rating 80.2
Romo Passing 64.9% compl 20543yds 145TD 71int QB Rating 96.8.  (2nd All Time) (Aaron Rodgers number 103.7.)

 Vick 4th QTR within 7pts QB Rating 57.0  - 4th QTR overall 69.9.
Romo  4th QTR within 7pts QB Ratin 99.8   - 4th QTR overall 103.6... OT-QB rating 116.7

Winning percentage  Romo 63% Vick 58%
Playoff = Rome 1 and 3..  Vick 2 and 3...

Cowboys - Eagles

I still have problems putting the beat-down that Andy Reid placed on Ryan's Defensive scheme earlier in the year.

So, I am in Jerry's corner on the Scared O-Meter.

Missing Felix will be big in protecting Romo today.  I expect that Dallas will try to open up the passing game and I just hope Romo survives the hits he will take with this new Blitz crazed Eagles defense.
Since the new D Coordinator in Philly won his battle of coaching eogs with the D Line Coach, the Eagles have returned to a blitzing team and are much improved.

Which Vick will we get, the overrated inaccurate one or the freak that is hot?

LSU Basketball

Are we supposed to believe that there is life in Baton Rouge after beating a 10th ranked Marquette.

This team has already lost to Northwestern, Coastal Carolina and South Alabama so I was expecting another dismal year.

At 8-3, chalk me up as a skeptic.
If they beat Va on Jan 2, I will be a little more positive, but I still expect a collapse at conference time.

Its not the talent I question, its the comfort that they play with on offense. Everything seems out of sorts when I watch them.

J.

Bossier and North Crowley. Airline - Huntington.

Bossier travelled to North Crowley.

Bossier was up 1 in 2nd quarter, down 6 at half and then 7 down going into the 4th.
North Crowley pulled away to win by 57-41 score.
I am unsure exactly what happened to keep Francis to 4 points and then being dismissed from the team at Bossier's next game
It is ashamed, if he is really dismissed from the team.  He basically beat Airline 2 weeks ago by himself.
I have never seen a player be able to touch that many balls on defense, it is insane.
One of our friends, that is a college head coach was just laughing about how many steals he had against the Vikes. "I have never seen anyone like him" was the quote.
Coach reminded me of when I first told him about Francis 3 years ago while watching him as a sophomore totally confuse high school All American Langston Galloway (currently avg 16.00ppg at St Josephs)
My favorite moments for him were in the Semi's and Finals when he just deflected every pass and then last years semis when he took the 4A player of the year completely out of the game.  The kid who was bigger never scored a point when he was within 10feet of him and only had 2 at the half.  What a waste!

Tuesday.
Airline beat Huntington by 13 in a game that after halftime was mostly 16 points.
Airline ran them into the ground and used a match up 2-3 zone to keep the ball out of Qualls hands.
Qualls finished with 18 after sitting the first 4 minutes for missing a practice.
He is a so athletic and it is ashamed that the offense isn't tailored to take advantage of his incredible athletic ability.
Airline sat the PG for the first quarter and 3 of the first people off the bench for the first half.
The Vikes are getting closer on this team building journey, since the coach sat the starters for the way they played during their recent mental collapse in losing 3 games out of 5.

Former Buc Dak Prescott at MState

This is froma Mississippi State Blog.
-------------------
We learned a little bit about Dak Prescott tonight. He's the freshman quarterback from Haughton, La., who's taking a redshirt this year but got a ton of snaps during tonight's scrimmage at Davis Wade Stadium.

Chris Relf took some snaps, too, while Tyler Russell (knee) watched from the sidelines. The very unofficial stats on Prescott: 36 of 57 for 439 yards and two touchdowns, plus an 11-yard rushing TD. I had him 22 of 25 at one point, and then there were several dropped passes later on. He had seven completions of 20-plus yards.
"He has the want-to, he has the ability, he has the toughness, likes to be a leader out there on the field. Now he's just got to get the skill all down," coach Dan Mullen said.

"It was almost the same, because we've been practicing on it for a while. He really is getting to understand the offense," said receiver Jameon Lewis.

Prescott has a strong arm and has a pretty good idea of how to use it. But there are some freshman things he must overcome.
"Decision-making, he's got a long way to go," coach Dan Mullen said. "What you see is a guy who has great want-to, he's very high-energy, high-motor, tough, shows leadership while he's out there on the field. But he's got to learn the skill and the decision-making of the quarterback position, which that's what's going to take a lot of time."

Prescott has been on campus nearly 12 months, having enrolled in January. So he's been through spring drills and summer workouts and preseason camp and done scout team work. And now he's got that first week of bowl practice plus the scrimmage under his belt.
After another offseason, he should be in pretty good shape as the No. 2 QB.

"It's like once you (learn) something, the rest of it just starts to come," Prescott said. "I feel like I've got some stuff, but it's definitely a lot more to learn. Just go in every day and learn from Chris and Tyler and do the best I can."

TX State Championship Games Last Weekend.

My traveling is slowing so I thought I would comment on what I witnessed.
I did get to see the 2 ESPNU High School Rbs and thought a 3rd was their equal.
-
Aledo and Manvel- Manvel had the talent to make it close, but the 3 times defending State Champs scored when they needed.
Jonathan Gray-Aledo 5 star:
Looked smaller than I expected at 5'11" and 190.  Yahoo has him at 4.4 but it looks like a 4.49 at best.
He is elusive in a fluid way and will be something the Horns desperately need.  Hard to tackle in open field but not someone that will break tackles between the tackles.  I like him more than Malcolm Brown.
I was sitting with someone that played against Gray in district and he made a comment about him not playing hard all the time. (His D Coord told the team.)  So I watched!  It is true, he did not block at all and it hurt them on more than a few plays.   Two times I saw him not even put his mouth piece in all the way, when he wasn't involved in a passing play.    This is a worrisome fact for the Horns.  Add this to his supposed suspension earlier in the year for giving an opposing player a throat slash gesture and we may have a
bit of maturity issue for this superstar.

Southlake - Hightower.
Hightower definitely had the better athletes and the best offensive player on the field in 4 Star Aggie signee Bralon Addison.  5'10 182 - 4.4 40 and appeared quicker than Gray.  Addison never stopped driving and left people standing dumbfounded in the open field.
The Dragons just know how to win and JR QB Hill was running through lanes the entire 2nd half.
I am still confused on how good I think Hill is.

Delkaney-Steele.
Mismatch in this one. Steele didn't have the athletes that the other 3 5A teams put on the field.
Trey Williams from Delkaney( another Aggie signee is a 5 star at 5'8 180) has the ability to make people miss. I didn't stay to see all of this one, but he is good and tough.

I understand why Gray is a 5Star and Williams, but Addison looked to be the same level at a 4star.
I saw that yahoo compared him to Devery Henderson.
I am impressed with the two Aggies signees.

Did I see better athletes that the ones I witnessed in Lousiana this year...No, but they are just as good.

Rangers Fight Back

Rangers win right to negotiate with Yu Darvish.  After watching the Angels poach C.J. Wilson and sign Albert Pujols, the Rangers show they are all in by putting up a reported $51mm just to get the rights to talk with Darvish for 30 days.  If successful, the Rangers' rotation could be totally revamped in 2012 with Darvish, Feliz, Holland, Ogando, and either Harrison or Lewis.  Lots of potential and lots of questions.  Can Feliz start?  Is Ogando strong enough to start 30 games?  Is Darvish for real or another Japanese bust?  Plenty of work for Mike Maddux but it will be exciting.

S

Robo QB

I really enjoyed ESPN's look back at the saga of Todd Marinovich, and what a saga it was.  As usual, the sensationalism of the story obscured the basic fact that Marinovich was mega talented.  6'4 with a fluid motion and good athletic ability, he started as a freshman at Mater Dei High in CA, which was a top program, and went on the become the career U.S. passing yardage record-holder.  He then amazingly started as a true freshman at USC and won the Rose Bowl.  How much better could it get?  Even the hard veterans on the Raiders like Howie Long and Ronnie Lott could see the ability and what they called the "it" factor.  Unfortunately the dream wasn't really his and he didn't love football enough to take his talent seriously.  He got on the drug path and couldn't get off.  But I enjoyed seeing and remembering just how good he was in contrast to how he's now only remembered as some bizarre experiment.

S

The Resurrection of Reggie Bush

Don't look now but Reggie Bush has for the moment stopped the free-fall of his career.  After yesterday's 200-yd explosion he is sitting with 974 yards for the year and a 5.0 average.  The 4th quarter 76-yd TD reminds of the so-far wasted talent that Bush has.  It will be interesting to watch whether the Dolphins keep giving him the ball and whether he can handle the load.  I've always enjoyed his talent despite the character flaws.

S

Appreciating Lake Travis

High School football has been "official" in Texas for 91 years.  In that time no team in any classification has won 5 straight state titles, until now.  Lake Travis won their very first title in 2007, and haven't stopped yet.  They've done it with 3 different coaches and 3 different QB's.  It can be easy sometimes to get used to success, but lest we forget what it means to win 5 straight, it means the Cavs have gone 30-0 in the playoffs since '07.  That's 30 straight wins against the best 4A competition in the state.  Just an amazing feat that needs to be celebrated.

Bodog.net SEC Bowl Games

I was looking the odds on bowl games this week and found a bit of a surprise.

10 SEC schools in Bowl Games. No underdogs from the SEC were listed.
So much for the SEC having down year.
LSU-Bama was Pick Em.

I would shocked be if the SEC goes 7-3, but the odds say it should happen.

Biggest worries as an SEC fan would be Auburn, Florida and Ga.
I never trust the Ga coach in a big game, even though he will have a serious talent advantage against the Spartans. Auburn is imploding, Florida has an OSU team with two coaches, but at least they get to forget about Charlie.

Miss the Down Home Bobby Bowden Quotes.

Coach Bowden using his dialect as only he can on the Bama - LSU.
I don't think he has ever forgiven Spurrier for losing that rematch for national title in 1996.

"We got beat pretty doggoned good that second game," Bowden said during his talk to the Tallahassee Quarterback Club. "
"It wouldn't surprise me for LSU to win -- they are good as you've seen -- but to me Alabama has the same advantage that Florida had on us. They got beat and they're mad as you know what. They're as mad as a wet hen. And if you're not careful, your guys are satisfied."

j

What is happening at Auburn.

Less than 12 months from a NC.
D Coordinator is gone.
O Coordinator is gone.
Great recruits coming in again this year.

Gene Chizik has some interesting decisions to make and first off he better get that Defense fixed.
Stoops is supposedly a front runner on defense.

Chizik was supposed to be a defensive guy and I have seen no sign of it since his arrival.
I expect Auburn to be better next year, if for no reason other than the talented Frosh and Sophs.

Article on Cowboys and Garrett

http://www.shreveporttimes.com/article/20111214/SPORTS0405/112140307/Roy-Lang-III-Jason-Garrett-denial-about-Cowboys-culture

I loved the 2nd to last paragraph.

"Enough is enough with the double talk and avoiding the pink elephant — the franchise is in desperate search of a winner. No team fears Dallas; the invincibility is long gone."

j

Morris at Clemson - Malzahn and Graham.

There is a good article in the Shreveport Times on the differences in High School Coaches pay in Louisiana vs Texas.

I would assume that while Chad Morris was building that dynasty at Lake Travis he was into the $120,000 range. Merry Christmas coach from the great state of South Carolina.
He signed for $1.3 million at Clemson as O Coordinator.

In the same spirit Gus Malzahn signed at Ark State shortly after what he did with his 7 figure salary  at Auburn. He takes a job with Arkansas State in the Sunbelt.  Ouch. He missed out on the Vandy and other jobs last year.   I like Gus and his brain, it will be curious to see what happens.

Then ex-Allen High Coach Graham leaves Pitt's lack of support to the beautiful campus in Tempe.
Arizona State hiring Graham shocked me.   Graham has a way of rubbing other coaches in a wrong manner at times.  It will be interesting.

Finally able to read Cowboys stuff again.

- So Miles Austin admitted he turned the wrong way when he lost ball in the lights.
- McBriar is punting with nerve damage in his left foot?
- Ware is hurting and I cannot find out how bad it is.  I saw the scouting reports that the Giants were chipping and doubling him all night, but after every tackle he seems to need to leave the field.
-  Sean Lee missed at least 3 tackles due to not being able to use that broken hand/wrist.  This kid is great.
- Romo-   Cannot even fathom why Marshall Faulk continues to blame Romo for 4th quarter loses.
*Romo still has the highest QB Rating in 4th quarter in NFL history.  Is he as good as the best ever..No, but he is better than most.
- Even with the influx of injuries on the OLINE, they are better than last year without the money bags.
- Can Anthony Spencer be as inadequate as it appears?  Always following and missing things.
j

So Buehler is on IR with groin, then has another surgery.

Buehuler had hip surgery, which would explain the groin problem and the lack of power we were told about.
From personal experience, an injury in the hip has multiple symptoms that it causes.

I still do not forgive Jerry GM for still having him on the team.

Special Teams in Dallas

Do I need to rehash everything I have ranted about for the last three years with the Special Teams.
Lets just add a blocked field goal to Joe D inadequacies.

Sickening!!  How does this guy have a job?

On a hard to imagine note, they gave up 510 yards to the Giants.
Do we blame Ryan or Jerry?
I lean toward Jerry- Newman and James are horrible and they have nothing in draft picks to help out.

Romo missing pass to Miles was hard to take, did Miles not playing make Romo thinking he was going straight when Miles went toward sideline?  Who knows.  But that offense didn't lose this game.

Remember that "D" grade I gave the coaches at mid season.
10 penalities tonight. Blocked FG.  Wasted Timeout in 3rd on defense.
Is D grade, too high?  Yes, if I include the GM bad decisions.
Buehuler is still on a team with hurt lineman and crippled DB's.. Spencer, James and Newman are just non-productive on a grand scale.  Ware is hurt and Spencer doesn't sniff the QB.

J.

Colt McCoy and the Browns training staff.

How in the world does Colt McCoy return to the field and play after he was knocked COLD!
Are they trying to kill this kid!

I saw where his dad went public questioning the decisions.

I thought the NFL had some kind of protection in place for this stuff.

J.

Cowboys and Giants

Fear!
Eli owns the 4th quarter and the Cowboy DB's are really weak.
I was shocked that the pre-game show was picking apart 41
Bad Footwork, really!  How is that possible after all of these years other than his unwillingness to change.

Romo will need a big one tonight, but at least they are healthy with the exception of  Marty B.  (And that's a positive)
Now if Coach Joe D could get lost on the way to the game, maybe the Boys can win one.

J.

Texas State Championships.

I will be in DFW Friday night I believe for Dawn's Birthday.
Saturday Games-the first two games interest me.  I am trying to get a hall pass.
We could see Gray shatter the national TD record.
Then you can watch me pull for the Dragon's.

Favorite Athletes

Loved the post on Athletes Your Father Loved.  My Dad loved old-school guys like Jim Taylor, Johnny U., Jerry West.  He spoke in awe of Mantle and Koufax.  Loved Staubach and Rocky Marciano.  Hated Ali with a passion.

I'll break my list into my youth and my adulthood.

Youth:  Staubach, Gail Goodrich, Pete Rose, Ali, Havlicek, Tom Seaver, Sugar Ray Leonard, Earl Campbell, John McEnroe, Dale Murphy.

Adulthood:  Jordan, Woods, Pedro, Pete Sampras, Eric Dickerson, Aikman, Greg Maddux, Brett Favre, Dirk Nowitski, Josh Hamilton.

Fun!

Steele on BCS

Phil Steele was asked this morning about the BCS match-up.  He leaned toward matching the 2 best teams regardless of conference.  He also said Vegas would make LSU a 12-pt favorite over OK St. while the Bama game is a virtual pick 'em.  He thinks Bama is the better team.

Pedro Retirement Tribute

S,
I knew you would appreciate this article on Pedro Martinez and his 23-4, 1999 season.
http://larrybrownsports.com/baseball/pedro-martinez-1999-best-baseball-season-ever/1327

Quote
The second closest pitcher to Pedro in ERA was David Cone at 3.44, almost a run and a half lower. Pedro had a 2.07. Three players with ERAs in the 4′s made it in the Top 10 of the league that year. Get that? An ERA in the 4′s meant you were having a really good season. Pedro’s WHIP was 0.92 — the next closest wasn’t even sub 1.2 — it was Eric Milton at 1.22. Pedro struck out over 13 batters per nine innings pitched. The next closest was Chuck Finley at not quite eight and a half.

Amazing.

Saban Story - Coldblooded!

As LSU fans we will always honor Saban for establishing LSU as a national power.
So, when I saw this interview from a former Miami Dolphin, I had to take a double take.

http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/evans-saban-stepped-over-convulsing-player-29919

Quote from interview with Heath Evans:
: Well, the first day of two-a-days.  And then that night we had another practice under the lights, if I recall I think it was about from 6 to 9.
Jeno James, our best offensive lineman at the time, comes in and collapses after practice, uh, vomiting all kinds of stuff that would make a billygoat puke, eyes rolled in the back of his head. Myself, about four other lineman are trying to carry him from the locker room, to the training room.
But he’s so big and sweaty and heavy that we actually have to set him down in the hallway between the locker room and the training room.

Nick Saban literally just starts walking in, steps over Jeno James convulsing, doesn’t say a word, doesn’t try to help, goes upstairs, I don’t know what he does.
(James spent the night in a hospital)

Saban calls a team meeting about 10:30 that night, comes down and says, ‘You know, the captain of the ship can never show fear or indecision, we’ve always gotta have an answer, and so I had to go upstairs, that’s why I walked over Geno like that, I had to collect my thoughts and decide what’s best for our team.’

j

SEC Storied

I have seen two of these shows on ESPN.
I enjoy the history, even if they aren't great to watch.

Herschel Walker- I wish I hadn't watched it some ways.  Hearing him talk about Russian Roulette and the violent anger  he felt ruined some of my thoughts.  But his speed and power jump off the screen and I just think WOW!

The Play That Changed College Football. - It was appropriate I watched it after LSU's Mathieu.
The story is based on another player who was always in the right place at the right time.
George Teauge int for a TD to beat Fla in SEC championship game.  Of course he did it again against
Miami in NC game right after that.

Shows I want to see:
I want a show on Spurrier, before I want one on Bear Bryant.
I would also like one on Archie Manning.
Next, I want a story on the similarities of up and downs with Namath and Stabler at Alabama.

J.

The Old Ball Coach

After beating up on Clemson for 3rd straight year.
A quote from a Gamecock play-by-play went out that Spurrier had said this.
'We may not be LSU or Alabama, but we ain't Clemson, folks.'

Well Dabo, being Dabo says this during a live TV rant two days before VTech game.

This isn't a rivalry its a domination.
They are in their best era in 115 years, they have two 10 win seasons, they won a title in 1969 and an SEC "EAST" Title.
South Carolina isnt Clemson, this is a place that has a NC and 17 conference title.
Heck we've won more Bowl Games than they have ever been to, I think we have 100plus more wins.
They ain't Alabama. They ain't LSU. And they're certainly not Clemson.
The university in the state of South Carolina is Clemson.

Spurrier Comments- I haven't heard it, but I read it.  (And it does sound like Spurrier.)

‘Well, what do you want me to do? I didn’t say it,’” Spurrier said. “Smart people don’t believe everything they read, and they don’t believe hearsay. … I guess Dabo believed it.”.

Spurrier is still my favorite quote machine in football history.
j.

Donald comments on Tiger and Rory

I watched Tiger play well down the stretch for his win against other 17 players.
.(Yes I said 17 players, can you say exhibition.)  He hit great shots and made the putts when it mattered, while Zach Johnson who hadn't played in 6 weeks missed two putts that were very make able.
As I have said since the beginning, when he can read the putts his short game is so good he will win for years.
Here is the Quote from World Number 1 Luke Donald:
"I know Tiger is very, very close and obviously I think Tiger's work ethic has always been tremendous, and his mindset, as well. I think his mindset is what has separated himself from the field when he was really at the top of the game. But in terms of talent, I think Rory has more talent," Donald said Wednesday at the Dubai World Challenge.
The Englishman believes Rory is a natural.

"I've always said, 'I think of the guys I've played out here on tour, Rory has the most talent that I've ever played with.' He's young and he's got a great future ahead of him and I see him winning lots of tournaments and lots of majors,"

Of course Donald was attacked off the course by the butt kissing media and there memory of Tiger's original talent.
So, Mr. Donald had to comment again and temper his comments by saying that Tiger is the best at getting the ball in the hole.
What a fickle world of golf followers, attack a guy with an opinion, correction any negative opinion about Woods.
Right or wrong they need to let someone besides Woods' posse have an opinion. Stories and appreciation of people is what makes sports special.
By the way, Tigger is getting muscled up again.  .....Hmmmmm, wonder how that is happening.

Athletes your father loved.

I came across this list on on sportsnation.
Obviously this list was written by a nothern gentelman, but created interesting thoughts.
This is nowhere close to my father's list, so I will add a few.

His List.
10. Jack N.  9. Andretti 8. Hull 7. Rose  6. Johny U  5. Aaron  4.B Russell 3.Orr  2. Namath 1. Ali

My Fathers List:
No order- Hero worship isn't his style but I still hear the stories in my head.

Sandy Koufax  Dizzy Dean, Micky Mantle, Stan Musial, Bill Russell, Bob Lilly, Ted Williams, John Havilcek, Arnold Palmer. and Jim Taylor.

My List will be interesting to think about, since it appears I like coaches more than players.
Roger Staubach, Larry Bird, Jack Nicklaus, Barry Sanders, Sidney Moncrief, Bill Walton, Fred Couples, Earl Campbell, Reggie White and Michael Jordan.

My Favorite Quote of the Week

Danielson on Mathieu Punt Return:  (2nd one)

"He is like smoke through a key hole"

Fuel for your BCS complaint.

One of the major players in the OKIE ST being left out is the Harris Poll.
Human Polls.
3 voters had OK ST at 6th in their poll.  Ridiculous.

No SEC bias on this vote to worry about,  it was a Iowa admin, Notre Dame player and ex Hawaii coach that voted them down to low.

Maybe the worse vote was former Texas player voting Arkansas 19th and South Carolina 8th.
Less than a month ago the Hogs beat USC 44-28.

Crazy stuff.

Kentucky-North Carolina in Lexington.

This was a great game to watch.
UNC pulled away early and I thought that the KY bad shooting from 3 would get them.
I was wrong, they play tough defense for the Coach Cal and put so much pressure on teams it is hard not to turnover the ball.

If you haven't seen KY Freshman Davis play shot blocker, you have missed a treat.
This kid is all arms and is much quicker than I expected.
He went across the lane to 10 feet out in a second to block 6 11 guy jump shot. ( Crazy athletic move)
Freshman Kidd-Gilchrest led the Wildcats with 17 and 11 against this massive UNC team.

North Carolina played good and still lost. I watched them lose to UNLV earlier
and this wasn't the same kind of effort.

North Carolina shot 61% from 3pt land while Kentucky shot 23.5.

SEC - Big East Challenge

The Big East took 8 of the 12 games, but I was impressed with an improvement in the SEC teams.
They are still weak overall in my opinion, but much stronger than the last two years.
5 of the SEC losses were by 6 points or less.

Shockingly, since this started in 2007, the Big East only leads the series.  16-12.

Rutgers must really be bad to lose to this LSU team.
J

All SEC Teams

Richardson -Offensive Player of the Year.
Mathieu- Defensive Player of the Year.
LSU and Alabama both had 5 players on 1st team.

Shock of the day!
Alabama has only 2 players on first team on Defense and more on Offense. (3)   ????

LSU had 4 on defense, Claiborne, Montgomery..and punter Punter Wing.  .1 on Offense- Blackwell.

Does Alabama with only 2 on Defense show how many NFL type athletes are really in the SEC?
J

Heisman

Shocking trip to New York for the Honey Badger.

Luck, Griffin III, Richardson, Ball and Mathieu.

My picks without breaking down the percentages of the teams numbers.
1. Griffin III
2.  Richardson
3. Luck

Cowboys Disaster

This Arizona game made me sick.
Where do I start?

Dallas Offense scores 13 points and needed a 50yd FG to do it.
Romo played well and ran for his life through out most of the game. 5 Sacks and numerous more hits.
The Defense was on the field way too much and still only gave up 13 in regulation, so lets give them a pass with that battered secondary.

Full Blame for this one falls on Two Coaches.
1.  Red Jesus-  Bad offensive adjustments for most of the game.
Then the fiasco with the time-out at the end.
I saw where some are mentioning a newbie as a coach will make mistakes.
The comment I had to give a double take to was that Jason Boy needs an Offensive Coordinator.
Interesting thought, maybe he does,  he still cannot get his offense in the end zone and then
he made a mistake on clock management.

2.  Special Teams coach -  Why does he want a TO and then convince Garrett to do it?
It is simple, he is used to mistakes.   He was running around looking at everyone with with 7 seconds on the play clock and the team already in position.

I was repulsed.

BCS BS

I guess even though it was coming for weeks, I thought when it came down to it they wouldn't do it.  But they actually left out a big-conference champ with 1 loss in favor of a 1-loss conference loser who sat home on championship weekend.  Sometimes you search for better words, but in this case I don't find a better word than "wrong".  This is wrong.  This is voting by bias and reputation.  Instead of an interesting new school-old school, offense-defense, Big12-SEC matchup, the country gets treated to a divisional rematch.  Saban and the whiners in AL don't deserve it.  How can such a great sport be run by such idiots?

S

Mike Leach

Shocked is my initial feeling with Mike Leach going to Washington State.
I will miss his radio show and insight on breakdowns fo the games.  His Co-Host is too hard to listen to.

Leach was the person that said LSU had the best talent in the nation back in July.

The quote was something like this.
If LSU gets an average offense no one can beat them.  Hell if they would have had an average offense they would have won the national championship last year.
His opinion was that Alabama had the 2nd best talent.

I hope he wins and takes care of this Oregon love affair out west.
J.

The Texas Media Delusions.

Matt Mosely is one of my favorite writers, especially on the Cowboys side of things.
His Cowboy blog with the DMNews was the best I have ever read.
But, his information on college is a little weak, maybe it due to being a Baylor grad and hearing excuses for so long from the Big 12.

This is what he wrote on Sherman:
"He would've likely been the most honorable man to lead an SEC team in years, but that will get you only so far with fans hell-bent on forming a new identity outside the shadows of DeLoss Dodds' kingdom."

Really?  Why do these people believe this crap?
Similar to the misconception about the academics in the Big 12, any moral definitions coming out of the Big 12 is a joke.
The academics are lower than the SEC and since when did the schools or coaches in Texas become known as pillars of self discipline. The entire SWC is gone because of these schools hidden win at all cost mentality.
Sherman maybe a great man, but why disparage so many people with the same reputation from the SEC.
J.

Tebow Weekly

What do you say.  6-1 with another comeback win.
QB rating 149.3
The Broncos had 4 scoring drives in the last 18 minutes while trailing. 3 in 4th quarter.

j.

Cowboys-Cards

I was listening to the pre game show with Brad and Babe.
Babe is on board with the Special Teams disgusting play.

His quote:  "They are next to Awful"
Then he talked about Peterson being a problem today.

His next subject was that the inability of the WR's to run the routes and causing turnovers.
He stated it would cost the Cowboys a game soon.

j

La State Finals.

The Monroe Powers are in the finals again,  amazing productivity from a place with a little over 50000 people.

West Monroe- Carencro-5A
(Actually, I think Ouachita should have beaten Carencro (lost 28-24) in 2nd round.
This is not a good Rebel team, so Carencro could win this thing.

Neville plays Karr 4A
Neville beat Breaux Bridge which has supposedly 7 or so future LSU signees. 3 have commited.
The Karr radio people were talking like Neville has not seen those kind of athletes they will see at Karr...ha.
Earlier,  I had told you the Neville QB was best player I had seen this year, well down 7-0 in 2nd the coach put him in at DB.  He picked off two passes in the 16-7 win.

Ouachita Christian.-West St John 1A.

Winnfield (13-0) play Curtis in 2A.   Curtis put a beat down on Evangel. 44-6 and I expect the same in the finals.

Okie State

The Title Game Debate:

The Cowboys did everything possible to get into the game against LSU.
They played great against this depleted Sooner team and made Stoops and Landry look terrible.
Then VTech goes down with a thud and will allow the split voters to switch to Okie State.
But!
It appears the majority of the nation still believe that Bama is number 2, When I saw the coaches poll did not change the 1-2 pairings, any hope for a less athletic match-up for LSU dissolved. (AP still has Bama 2)

I actually laughed when I heard Gundy suggest he could score 39 or 36 points against LSU.
He is doing his job, but a little reality is needed.   How about saying 21 or 24, even if I doubt that also.
What if?
LSU - OKIE STATE---- LSU 45-16.
LSU- Bama --- LSU 20-19.
Bama-Okie State- Bama 45-13.

The two best teams will play, and America media will complain about the match-up and forget that this LSU has a chance to be considered top 10 of all time.

The Aggies are showing a sign of life.

Maybe my opinion of the Aggies is continuing to change regarding the athletic department.

First, They leave the Texas ties and join the SEC.
Secondly, they correct the initial hiring of Sherman with his firing today.

Word in local media is Houston's Sumlin as his replacement.

I do not like this hire for the Aggies, Sumlin followed great offensive minds at Houston and kept the system and became famous.
If I was at the A&M helm, I would aim much higher and someone more prepared for the SEC wars.
Dan Mullen, Butch Davis, WV Coach or even upset the world and go hire Mike Leach away from Washington State.
I would hire Smart over Sumlin.

Hire someone who understands big time football recruiting and talent.
The Ags have a chance to turn all of the Texas money into something special, lets see if they can do it.

I really wish Bama was playing Georgia

Nice Quote from Ga DB:

"Our offense is definitely better than Alabama's. We can run the ball as well as pass the ball," Commings said. "Aaron Murray's a great quarterback. He has experience. So we don't have to have a perfect game because our offense has our back and we have their back."

Alabama averaged more points and yards per game.

Rather cocky in Georgia.

While I am on Penitiatary State U.

The Ex-VP of Student Affairs went on TV about how bad the discipline was at Penn St with Paterno and the athletes.
Student affairs was told by Paterno, in  LOUD VOICE, that the school shouldn't be deciding discipline for his players.
He bullied everyone to cover up things for his players to maintain eligibility.
=
At one point, she asked Jo Pathetic to have his players tell the truth.
Jo Pa told her he couldn't ask them to rat on each other or they wouldn't play for him.

Now we understand, why Paterno covered up the child abuse.
(Yes, in 1998 the police knew and Paterno is denying it, even though Sandusky was let go and never given another head coaching job....  ( Sure Joe, we believe you))
He thought and still thinks his program was above the school and he was the law.
(Do you remember my post on all of the arrest records at this supposedly righteous school last year? )

Paterno " is what he is" and the media should be ashamed for not finding these issues .
40 accounts from 1992 and climbing.  One already reported being abused over 100 times and Paterno knew! 10 year old kids.

How many lies does this man hide behind?
An article was written in April, that Penn State and Paterno traded with Sandusky - "Retirement for a Cover Up"
http://www.timesonline.com/columnists/sports/mark_madden/madden-sandusky-a-state-secret/article_863d3c82-5e6f-11e0-9ae5-001a4bcf6878.html

Syracuse and Boeheim.

Unlike Jo Pa for the last 40 years, I never had a feeling that Boeheim was a mean-spirited ego maniac.
Yes, Boeheim has been a jerk in media sessions, but his laugh and the way he worded things never seemed contrived to me.  Besides I never heard of Boeheim fighting in recruits houses or threatening to beat up a woman after a traffic incident.

Even at this very moment, I really don't think Boeheim knew what was going on with this sick bastard.

But................
His comments after the reports and the way he attacked the accusers was just child like ignorance.
It is almost unforgivable that he publicly attacked the people without knowing or investigating the stories.
A slap of reality is flowing through his recent comments, now that a recording was made public confirming part of the stories.

Protecting "your own" in sports has to stop!

30 years he was with this man and he never knew anything?  Especially considering the close knit  coaching fraternity is hard for me to believe, unless Coach Boeheim just hides from problems.
I know that his initial comments suggest that his personality is that he would protect first and investigate second.
If it comes out that other coaches joked about Fain being a sexual deviant, Boehiem better get fired within the hour.
Even if he didn't know, I would have a hard time not firing him for his initial comments.

This is not as bad as the Penn State story since we know they ignored the child abuse on a grand scheme, but it is repulsive on a biblical scale.

They will ruin sports for me eventually.
How can they hurt kids?
