Mavs - Heat quote of the night.

Van Gundy- "How do players argue when the WACK a guy on the arm? What are they talking about?"

One word for the coach-Delusions.

---
Good grief Lebron is good.
Start of the 4th and he has only taken 12 shots - 19 pts. 5 assist 1 To 1 steal.  While Wade continues his forcing with 3 TO and 6 of 15 shooting.

Kings Comment on Terrell Pryor

I commented on your post about the scathing comments Bill King made about Pryor being the downfall of the OHIO program. (Ohio was out of respect for the Wolverines coach.)

He also made a comment about the how stranger than ficton.

During the mad recruiting of Pryor, who would have thought that Pryor would still be playing in the Big 10
and Tressell and Rich Rod would be gone?

J.

Follow up --- This morning- Wed- King again lashed out at Pryor's ability as not good enough to play QB in the NFL.
During the years I have listened to King, rarely is he so down on a supposed Superstar.

Mavs-Heat.

S, I think when you made the comment " 3 of the 4 best players on the Heat "  you really made me consider what is going to happen in the series.

Do I favor the Mavs, No.
Are they a big underdog, No.
Can the Mavs win in 6, Yes.

My thoughts:
1. Bosh playing his hometown boys could really hurt the Mavs. If he continues to find his niche as an equal contributor with Wade ( in Lebron's eyes,) the Mavs will go down in 5.
2.  If the Mavs survive the Heats defensive intensity in the first two games, and pull one out all bets are off.
Dirk can score and I expect Wade to force his shots if he gets nervous.

3.  Marion and Terry are the keys to me.
Marion's defense and quick leaping is contagious.  His legs looked young again against the Thunder.
Terry- I always worry he will gag to death against the better athletes defensive pressure.  If he plays under control they can win.

4.  Chandler and Hayword will be key on Offensive boards with Dirk and Terry being pushed around.  2nd chance points are the key in these 89-85 games.

5.The best player in the world will beat the Mavs and I will be depressed if Wade doesn't pout. Not likely.
But if the Heat run on Dallas its over, but they will not do it.
Prediction.
If number 3 happens Dallaswin in 6.
I picked the Mavs - Heat matchup a long time ago, so lets go Mavs leaving it in 6.

Shocking End of Era at OSU

I'm just stunned at the chain of events that has led to the downfall of one of college football's great coaches.  A few players flaunt some rules and make a little spending money, the coach learns of it and files it away hoping no one finds out, events gain steam and boom, the coach is out at one of the top 5 jobs in the game.  The more you learn about college football, the more you wonder how anyone can navigate these trecherous waters.  You have to win, but you have to weave around a complicated set of rules, stretching, bending, but staying under the radar of everyone wanting to bring you down.

Look at Jim Tressel's career:  an Ohio native who built a dynasty in 1-AA winning 4 national championships in 15 years but wondering if the big call would ever come.  Then it does and he's ready: 10 years, 106 wins, 8 BCS bowls (5-3), 7 Big 10 championships, a 9-1 record against Michigan.  He wins a BCS championship taking down one of the most talented teams ever, and produces NFL players at a fantastic rate.  Unassuming, visible in the community, seemingly the perfect representative for one of America's top programs.

Now its all gone and at 58 Jim Tressel may have coached his last game.  He's a big boy and has to live with the decisions he's made.  But what I'm left with again is just how difficult being the head man at a major program is; the immense pressure, the wide array of responsibilities, the complicated rules, the talented enemies.  Lord knows I don't pull for Ohio St., but I feel the game lost a great one today and I hope that he can find peace whether in retirement, or if fate finds him coaching again on a smaller scale where he just be a coach once more.

Espn 30 on 30- Drazen Petrovic and Vlade Divac

S, I think you mentioned to me that I should watch this and I am so glad I did.

This story went so far beyond sports.

It reminded me of the beauty of  Basketball and more importantly how great the players on that Yugoslavian team really were.  I had forgotten the hate dished out to Divac because of the Serbian and Croatian conflict. Divac, who by all accounts is a great guy, really was a talent and was in a no win sitiuation.

During Petrovic's time with the Blazers and Nets we used to talk about how great a player he really was in world games.
It was enlightening to hear the players and coaches talk about Petro in Portland and why he didn't get playing time.
Rick Adleman was so caught up in playing the same ole same game, that he missed a chance to actually beat the Pistons with a game changing shooter and passer.

After his trade to the Nets we started to see the incredible shooting that Drazen could do.  What a sad day it was for the world when he was killed in the car crash.

Petrovic ended his short career shooting over 50 percent from the field.   Can you even remember that last time a 6-5 guard shot 50% while living off of a jump shot and 44% from 3.
As a comparison Reggie "Overrated" Miller NEVER shot 44% once from 3point land in his 18year career. Ray Allen has done it once.

I really did enjoy the story,  well done by Espn.

Mavs-Heat

With Lebron coming to town, I thought the ESPN artricle summarized something that the I wish I could see.

-- Caron Butler- Part of the article.
The rugged, 6-foot-7 Butler would be a significant asset for Dallas in the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat. In two regular-season games against the Heat, he averaged 18.0 points on 54.2 percent shooting and defensively helped limit LeBron James to 30.6 percent shooting from the field.

Coach Rick says Caron is a long shot.

NFL Strike

With the recent comments from two wonder minds like Ray Lewis and Drew Brees, I remembered why I have ignored everything about this story.

1.  Ray Lewis - Crime will go up without football... Really.
Its a miracle the country survives the rest of the year.
2.  Brees-  The death of Upshaw pushed the owners to get money back.... Really.
Millionaires would not try to make more money if Upshaw was alive.
And to think, that for the last decade many in the media and players union thought Upshaw was too weak.

J.

Rose in the Series.

Two amazing stats came from the Heat series.

An ESPN shooting chart that Rose shot only 21 on  FG and 11% from 3pt in 4th quarter during the series.

More amazing,

Rose shot 6 % from the field when Lebron was guarding him.

New Mavs

It seems that I may have posted before the playoffs that the Mavs had become irrelevant because they had a good team that didn't have the makeup to win several postseason series in a row.  Not sure if that was me or not.  Anyway, now at 12-3 after 3 series I have to give major kudos to Rick Carlisle and this group of scrambling players who have to overcome some talent deficiencies every night.  On most nights they look like they will probably lose, then they don't.

It would be fun to research how many players have ever played more efficient offensive basketball in a series than Dirk just did.  He scored 161 points in 5 games on only 88 shots from the field.  That's just an unheard of ratio.  56% from the field and 97% from the line.  A remarkable shooting display under immense pressure.

I wonder if in the history of pro basketball if any team has gone further with such youth as the Thunder.  Best 4 players 22 or younger.  They made plenty of mistakes that can probably be coached up and cured with a little more experience and maturity.  Scott Brooks will now have a bullseye on him as he will be expected to reach some finals in the near future.

Worried about the finals.  The Heat will have the best player on the floor and 3 of the best 4.  With their role players stepping up recently, it will be a tough task.

NCAA gives out Academic Penalties.

UConn basketball is the only big school on the list.  I must admit I was not suprised with Calhoun's group being hit.

The part that was more disappointing is that 3 teams from Louisiana were on the list of 6.
Southern, Grambling and UL Monroe all had there basketball programs hit.
The other basketball teams were, Cal State-Northridge, Chicago State.
The football teams at Idaho State and Jackson State.

Southern was the only school hit in football and basketball.   Ridiculous considering how much money is poured into Southern by the state.  Southern is the first school to receive a post season ban for this standard.

For the record USC Basketball was next to get hit.
Colorado was the only BCS football school that was below the bottom target in both major sports.

J.

Josh Hamilton

Josh Hamilton follows his storybook career with a homer in his first at bat last night

Rangers record without Hamilton being hurt this year.
10-1

With an injury the Rangers are below .500
15-21.

I read where Cliff Lee called him the best player in MLB this week.
It is just not natural what he does.  Career BA 312, slg 545.

J

NBA

I sat and watched in amazement as the Thunder fell apart last night.
We can call it inexperience and part of the climb to the top, but they had no offensive sets when crunch time came.
I remember when the Piston's and Lakers couldn't close games under pressure and they won multiple titles.

Who knows, maybe it will happen for the Thunder, but the Brooks-Westbrook thing is worrisome.

But, I was jumping high for the Mavs.

--
Tonight I am watching the CAVs, oops I mean the Heat, and wondered if Wade was trying to blow this game for his own ego.  Luckily he finally started playing in OT.
Watching James on the court with Rose, makes you appreciate what Lebron really is.
He is simply the best player in the world by a large margin.
I find it interesting that Rose cannot get by James with a dribble.
Lebron's defense was never something that I noticed, maybe it was because he is rarely isolated on the MVP.
He practically stopped the entire Bulls offense by himself at the end of regulation.

It will truly hurt if the Mavs lose to the heat in the finals.

8/23/2012 - Allen, TX

Announced this week by coaches from Allen High and Carroll High that Allen and Southlake will open the 2012 season by innaugurating the new Allen Stadium.  And, even bigger is that they are in talks with ESPN to televise the game on Thursday 8/23.  I get chills thinking about how raucous it will be on opening night for that stadium with ESPN and the hated Dragons in town.  I better work on tickets right now.

Dirk and Durant

Words? I am searching for how good these guys can shoot.

Dirk- How does Dirk score 48 points on 15 shots with no 3pt attempts.
12-15 from the field.  24-24 FT 4 blks.  6 reb.
I love it and it was a game to remember.

Durant- 40 points - 10-18,  18-19 fts, 8 reb, 5 asst, 2 blks.
What a great game he played.  When Durant finally takes 90% of his shots from 15 feet and in, he will be unstoppable.

Westbrook sure did get a lot of media coverage for being the man after Durant's bad night from 3 point land last week.  Westbrook is only shooting 40% from the floor in the playoffs, 7 assist and 3.5 turnovers..I am not impressed with his defensive cheating either.  He is playing angles instead of his man too often.

David Toms and TPC

Rarely will I comment about David Toms status on tour because of his relationships with some of my friends and family, but I watched David represent his family and state well after that heartbreaking loss on Sunday.

That tournament represented what makes sports so special to me.  The up and down emotional roller coaster is a heart killer.

What a day for watching golf,  I am tears were flowing in Bossier City after the playoff hole.

David did well.

The Evolution of a Star

Kevin Durant had a touch indoctrination to playoff basketball last year.  He got pushed around, rushed his shots, looked nervous, and flamed out.  This year I was interested to watch him deal with the pressure after having led the USA to the World Championship in the off season.

Today, he played the biggest game of his NBA career, a game 7 with much on the line and his reputation at stake after throwing a 3-14 in game 6.  In the 1st quarter he goes 2-9 and I'm thinking, uh-oh.  But, he never waivered and caught fire going 11-16 in the final 3 quarters and finishing with 39.  This after going for 41 in the closer vs. the Nuggets.

It's easy to forget that Kevin Durant is 22 years old.  At 22 he is a 2-time scoring champ, NCAA player of the year, 1st team all-NBA, and MVP of the World Championships.  As he continues to get mentally tougher and hopefully get a little stronger, it's truly amazing to think of where he can go.

Bryce Harper SI Poster Boy

The story of 18 year old Bryce Harper's power and talent has been well documented through his teen years.

During his first year in A ball, we get an utterly ridiculous story.

A few weeks ago Harper had his eyes checked.  The doctor tells him " you have the worst eyes I have ever seen."
Contacts and eye training sessions started.

10 games since contacts, he is batting .480,  7 Hr 23 RBI's  Slugging % 893.  OB 547.
For the year he is hitting393/473/702.

Harper's comment- Its like seeing in HD.
He evidently was given contacts in High School and they gave him headaches, so he didn't wear them.

Pujols

I've watched in total awe for 10 years as Albert Pujols has put up monster year after monster year after monster year.  10 straight hall-of-fame caliber years to start a career.  But, for the first time Pujols is looking mortal in 2011.  One quarter of the way into the year, the big man is hitting 60 points under his career average, is 70 points below his career OBP, and almost 200 points below his ridiculous career .620 slugging average.  Is it the contract that has him distracted, an unreported injury, or just the law of averages catching up to him?

S

Sorry State of American Tennis

I noted this week an article about the fact that no Americans reside in the top 10 in either men's or women's tennis.  How could this happen? Less than a decade since Sampras and Agassi walked away, we don't have a single player of stature in America and no one on the rise either.  And as soon as the Williams sisters call it quits, the same situation will be present on the women's side.  It's a sad state of affairs.

S

Rangers' Future CF

You might have read that Texas signed Cuban defector Leonys Martin this week and assigned him to AA Frisco.  In his first game, he batted leadoff, played center field, went 3-5 with 2 doubles and a stolen base.  Martin got a 3-yr $15.5 million contract and with Julio Borbon injured and playing poorly there is already talk that Martin could be in the bigs this year.  Martin is 23 yrs old, 6-2, 190.

S

Wonder Boy Spieth

Dallas Jesuit senior Jordan Spieth, he of Byron Nelson fame, rolled to his 3rd straight state individual title yesterday, blistering his way to a 2-day total of 12 under 132 (68-64).  Spieth is the 5th person to win back to back at the highest level in the state and you might recognize 3 of the other 4 players: Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, and Justin Leonard.

During the broadcast of the TPC the subject of Woods quitting due to pain came up.

Millers commented something like this. My quote is very close:

That's a tough one to decide or figure out. Really where he's at.  I know he's not good.
But,I think he could take 4 or 5 advil and have gutted it out.

Cowboys Free Agency Gossip.

Interesting read on NFL.com on possibilities for the Boys.
Asmougha at CB and Jenkins at DE would allow Ryan to play Defense like his brother in New York.

Asmougha has made a real name for himself with the Raiders and taking a Packers pressure player would be great additions.  They also discussed the possible of addition of safety Brandon Poole, who played for the Jets the last 8 games last year.

There is still the possibility that Huff will be a free agent and he played for Ryan for 2 years.

Mavs Opponent

Donnie told me that some of the media in DFW preferred to play the Thunder to the Grizzly.

I totally disagree, without the confusion of who is shooting the Thunder blow the Grizzly out of this series in game 6.

To me, the Mavs will have trouble if Westbrook and Durant just drive with the ball in a 2 man game.  The Mavs size should match up well with the Memphis team, and their guards will not expose the age of Terry and Kidd.

Rumblings in the Land of Thunder

I keep hearing people bringing up this possible rift between Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.  They have been seen yelling in the huddle and then last night Durant goes 9 minutes late without a shot attempt.  Westbrook is trying to immitate Derrick Rose by throwing up 30 shots, but it is selfishness or as J says a scheme problem with the coaching?  I tend to look at the coaching and also the fact that OKC has no other scoring options.  Durant can be pushed around with his frame and I've long thought their weakness is a lack of a viable scoring option outside of those 2.  Westbrook is very streaky and if Durant can be bottled up, they're in trouble.  James Harden with the #3 pick a couple of years ago is turning out to be an issue.  If they could have landed a big-time player with their last high draft pick before turning the corner, they could easily be championship material.  As they are right now, I'm skeptical.

Heat Make Conf Finals

I'm weird in that I sometimes am surprised by who I pull for.  Case in point; I'm getting a perverse pleasure in seeing the Heat win after all the backlash they've taken.  I'm kind of reveling in the arrogant Celtics taken down a peg.  I admit that I will find it just a mite enjoyable if they win it all and stuff it in the face of the holier than thou critics.  I just pray it doesn't come at the expense of the Mavs!

LSU Basketball Rant To End The School Year

Trent Johnson showed up in Baton Rouge saying all of the right things and had a good year with a 27-8, 13-3 record in his initial campaign.

Since his first year, LSU has not developed anyone special and posted some horrible records in a terrible SEC. The Tigers record has been 2-14 and 3-13 in the last two years of conference play.   How?

Johnson's record at LSU is 49-49 and I see not momentum in sight.  Unlike some of the pundits, I think he has talent to win 10 SEC games a year.  Coach Trent seems to be putting a square peg in a round hole with the system he uses and the players he has recruited and will play against.

LSU Basketball should never have fallen this far!

Ranking of College Football Coaches. Guess who is number 1..

Scout.com has a ranking of coaches for this year.
1. Saban
2. Stoops
3 JIMBO FISHER -  Wow.
4. Gary Patterson
5. Mack Brown
6. Chip Kelley
7. Petrino
8. Peterson
9. Les Miles
10.Mendenhall-BYU?
11. Pelini
12 Tressel

Ok, I admit shock at some of these picks.
My top 6.
1. Saban
2. 3 way Tie- Tressel-Stoops-Brown  -------- Can anyone really separate these 3?
4. Ferentz- I would like to see him with the athletes.
5. Beamer- He is not a Bobby Bowden, but he wins.  We can call him a Mini-Bowden.

Do you know how hard it is not to put Miles in the top two with Carroll and Meyer out of the game?

Seriously, Miles has a title and continues to load up on talent and win in a murderous conference.
Throw in the fact that his current team is going to be better than Stoops, Tressel and Brown and it confuses my brain why I hate watching him coach.
But then I remember his interviews and sideline coaching.
He is a buffoon!

Kelley is too new but climbing up quickly.  NCAA probation may get him and Peterson.
Patterson and Peterson have to play the big athletic teams week in and week out to get on my list.
I also like the ND coach a ton.
Jimbo did a great job, so maybe he will get there in a couple of years.
Auburn's new coach will have to prove it without the Offensive Brain Child on the sideline.

Petrino actually deserves a place in my top 5.
If he gets a defense I will put him at two unless Miles wins another title.
j

A ranking system of top 101 NFL Players.

I came across this on ProFootballfocus.com
If you could name two of this writers top 6, you are seeing things I miss.
Numeber  1. Aaron Rodger- Understandable.

Then is when it gets interesting:
2.  Justin Smith DE- SF
3.  Kyle Williams DT- Buf
4.  Trent Cole DE-Phi
5. Brandon Lloyd- WR Den
6. Charles Johnson-DE  Car

All I can say is ????????????????????

Cowboys    11. Witten  16. Ware
Top Saints  21. Nicks-NG  23.  Brees.
18.  Manning  35 Brady.    Matt Ryan number 8....Really?

Gilbert Named Starting QB Already.

Without much surprise to me, Mack Brown has evidently tabbed Gilbert as starting QB for next year.
I still blame Brown for putting Gilbert in a bad situation last year with his mindless decisions and WR coaching.

As a caveat, if Mack thinks the freshman RB recruit is going to fix that running game, Gilbert is in for a rough year.

Reggie Bush Saga

Rough year for Bush.
1.   Loses Heisman for cheating.
2.  All offseason people have speculated Bush would be cut by Saints.
3.   Coach suggest he will need to restructure his contract.  (Hint- Big Pay Cut. )
4.  Saints Draft a real Heisman Winner in 1st round.
5.  He is blistered for missing Drew Brees mini-camp.
6.   He tweets that he is glad for the lockout to miss the workouts in 100degree heat and chance injury.
7.   Post another tweet saying he was joking.

What a waste of a great wide receiver.
Gotta love it.

Thunder - Grizzlies.

Last nights triple overtime game was the epotime of why the Mavericks will be in the finals.

The Thunder have a serious issue with offensive schemes.
During the last 6 minutes of regulation Durant did not get a shot off.
He went 9 minutes before he finally fired up a 30foot 3 pointer.

This offense is really not set up for Durant, the screens are weak and make him drive into crowds of people and pull up to often.   Getting the ball at the top of the key is fine if the other playes spread away from him.
But with Perkins and Collison at the FT line or around the lane, Durant runs into double teams too often.

Westbrook is taking too many shots, but he really doesn't have a choice with this type of offense.
Coaching matters.

Dirk's Stage

The chance to face the Lakers did wonders for Dirk Nowitski's standing in the league.  Clearly the best player in the series, no Laker could slow him and the nation tuned in to witness.  It would do my heart a world of good to see him lead the Mavs to the championship.  The disrespect he has taken over the years has been hard to take, even though he has to take blame for 2007.  This could be the year to crown his career before age starts to chip away.

S

The End of Zen?

I will weigh in on today's national argument about the standing of Phil Jackson among great coaches of history.  All of your primary contenders such as Lombardi, Wooden, Bowman, Auerbach had a slew of hall of famers in their field so I totally ignore the point that Jackson "just" won with superior talent.  Jealousy typically rears its ugly head in the form of cheap, bogus arguments.  The bottom line is that Phil Jackson took what he had and made the most of it, the very most to the tune of 11 pro championships.  Read that again, 11 championships.  And, among the hardest thing to do in sports, keep champions motivated, was his specialty as he just fell short of 3-peating an ungodly 4 times.  Phil Jackson brought out the best in great players, which I would argue is harder than bringing out the best in merely good players.  He was asked to keep great teams charging ahead and he did that.  He was paid huge sums to win, and he delivered.  If we judge quarterbacks and centers by their championships, then we should afford the zen master his due.  The best?  Maybe, maybe not.  But, he is on the Mount Rushmore.  Fairwell Coach Jackson.

S

Mavs and Cuban

During the off season when Mark Cuban was putting this team together with the big guys in the middle, he specifically discussed what he needed to beat the Lakers.

Good for Cuban.

It is ashamed that Butler is hurt, I would like to see this Mav team healthy.

Pot Central in Gainesville?

I see where Muschamp is having to address the drug issue in Gator land.

The media has reported that 3 or 4 players were involved in issues with marijuana this year alone in Gainesville.
Throw in that the last 3 years of testing positive at NFL draft sites and Urban Meyer talking about it in 2005 as an issue.
Then later he said that he put a dent in the problem but it was still and issue.

More Seve.

After I typed my comments on Seve, I found an Rick Rielly article.
I love Rielly's appreciation for the special talents.

Here are some of these quotes and the link.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Severiano Ballesteros was the most distinctly original player I ever had the privilege to watch, and the most heart-stopping. He didn't hit a golf ball; he crashed into it. His swing had miles too much movement, but it echoed his beautiful mind, which gave him the greatest imagination for the game in history.

Practically born with a club in his hand, Seve had only a 3-iron for much of his childhood, and he'd play it out of anything. He learned to escape bunkers with that 3-iron, so you can imagine what a wizard he was with a sand wedge. He could get out of a silo with one.
Seve was a one-man plague of locusts on the United States. Not only did he revive European golf with his luminescent career, but he campaigned to get the Cup moved to other nations -- like Spain -- and then waged the most outrageous winning captainship there in Ryder Cup history in 1997.

He had certain greens mown -- during the rounds! -- without telling the U.S. side, so that only the European players would realize that green was twice as fast as all the others.

The Great Seve Died Today

Rarely in professional sports do we see a person that impacts a sports culture as much as Seve Ballesteros did with Golf form when he arrived in 1976.  I have never seen as many stoic men cry in interviews as I did today with his death.
This was a man that made an incredible impact during his 54 years on earth.

At 19, Seve won the Order of Merit on the European Tour and finished 2nd at the British Open that year.
He had a different swing each week or hole, he was long and wild.  But the great Spaniard always seemed to make birdies and pars from anywhere, especially when it mattered
He could literally hit any shot and get up and down from anywhere, it was crazy.

For the record,  I could not stand him when he was great!
Seve was ranked no 1 in the world winning majors instead of Jack and the other Americans. He would just tease people everyone by hitting it in 30 yards off line, then saving his rounds with his miracle shots.  But what really bothered me was that with his sturdy 6 foot 2 frame and charisma, he would intimidate fellow golfers with his emotional outburst.

On the positive side of his greatness and unlike Tigger Woods, Seve did not grow up with all of the best equipment and opportunities to fulfill his talent.  Thegolf  legend says that Seve learned to play on a Spanish Beach by hitting one club, an old 3 iron that his brother had given him.  He wasn't allowed to play the course so he learned on the beach.

Seve ended his career with 101 worldwide wins.  87 on the main tours.

A summary of Seve's thought on golf.  Last year after watching Phil win last years Masters by hitting that 6 iron from the straw between trees, Seve named his new puppy Phil.

It is a shame that the young people did not see the crazy stuff Seve did.

Michigan Coach

We read a ton of comments on the Michigan Football Coach - Hoke being a bad hire and I was amongst the disappointed.

I am smiling and laughing everytime I see him call "The Ohio State"
 "OHIO" during his new conferences.
The Buckeyes fans are very upset and I love it.

A little salt in the wound with the Tressel debacle.

Donnie called me about High School Stadiums in Texas

The money spent on big time athletics in parts of Texas is almost exorbitant.
We were discussing that even the small towns have great facilities.

S, I expect you to get me tickets to this place at Allen High Schools 60million dollar facility.
I will be there to watch your daughter Cheer when it opens in 2012.

Brees is chipping in.

It has been reported the Drew Brees has paid up to 10k to set up practices and trainers for his teammates.
Brees is paying the Tulane staff and his personal trainer to assist his team.

I actually wish this story would have come out after the season begins, it would have had a bigger media impact.

We will probably be bombarded with other players doing this in the past and currently, but it is still a good story.

Follow up to the MVP of the NBA.

If you get time look at this formula and ranking of players.
It compares productivity of a player vs the people they are matched against.
http://www.82games.com/1011/ROLRTG8.HTM

Howard is at the top at 15.8.
Followed by James 15.7, Wade 13.0, Garnett 11.5, Manu 11.3 and Dirk 11.2.
Howard and Lebron are much higher than the others.

One of the breakdowns shows the impact of a player on a team when he is not on the court.
The top three by a good amount.
Nash 17.  Pierce 16.4  Dirk 16.3 - James was 11th at 10.2, while Kobe is 60th in the league.

Another Sports Myth Debunked or is it just Hyperbole.

Tim MacMahon addressed a subject that the media seems unwilling to accept.

Is Kobe the best person to take a last second shot?  Recently 80% of NBA voted for Kobe.
The media has screamed at us about Kobe's clutch shooting for years, well here are the real facts.
Take Dirk over Kobe on a shot with 24 seconds remaining or less.

"In fact, no player who has attempted at least 50 potential game-winning or tying shots in the final 24 seconds of games over the last 15 years has been more efficient than Nowitzki. Dirk has drilled 26 of 67 such shots, according to ESPN Stats & Information. That's a .388 shooting percentage, well above the league average of .297.

It also compares favorably to Kobe, who has hit 37 of 117 shots (.316) in those situations. "

I saw where he Kobe is at 28% in the playoffs for his career.   The NBA average ???  28%

The excuses being made by Kobe's supporters:
He creates more shots for others, but they keep throwing him the ball for last second attempts.
82games.com  gives Kobe the edge but they use the last 5 minutes of games for the past 5 years. Even though Kobe shoots around 40 percent while Dirk is around 45% with a higher FT percentage.

For the record, Lebron is the best in the last 5 minutes during the last 4 years.  Even while being played out of position in Miami and trying to make his new teammate happy he still shoots higher percentages than Kobe.
James also has more assist, rebounds and steals during the last 4 years.

Rangers and Rays change of fortune.

After starting the year trailing every inning of everygame  for a MLB record exceeding 61 innings the Rays struggle to a
 1-8 record thru 9 games.
Then the manager who loses players yearly now just keeps winning ( and whom I think is now the best manager in MLB)
has helped the Rays go 14-5. to an overall 15-13.

On the other end of the changes of fortunes.

The Rangers were 9-1 with Hamilton sliding home.  Then the Natural goes down with our dreams.
Since then a 7-12 record overall 16-13.

Mavs - Lakers

Watching this game is reminding me of the robbery in Miami years ago that made DWade's rep into more than he is.

The Refs lets players mug Dirk, especially if he is moving to a shot with a side-to side movement.
It is Repulsive!

The Mavs win this game with a familiar combo of Kobe forgetting his teammates during his hot streak and Dirk being
unstoppable during the comeback.  The big men that Cuban brought in are giving the Mavs the meat to fight with the Refs and the Lakers.

I still don't like the Bulls ability to score.

I look for to the child like insight of excuses from Barkley, Wilbon, Webber, Smith and Anderson.   They will probably blame Jackson.  Maybe we can welcome them to the obvious.  Jackson wins with players not knowledge.

RB's and Murray

Since I am on the subject of drafting Murray, I wanted to again lambast Jones for keeping Barber after his intial good season.  How could they no see that he wasn't special and traded him for something.  MORON MOVE.

Anyway cut Barber ASAP.
Felix Jones- he is the player they want if healthy.  Two more years and if he is not dependable at that time cut him also.
Tashard Choice- I would cut him tomorrow.
He is a much better back than Barber and that I have complained in the past to let him run and get rid of Barber.   Now after another off season of seeing his interviews and hearing coaches discuss his lack of commitment on special teams.
Cut Him!
Listening to Choice play games with the media pundits and the phrases he uses, I have no doubt he is a Clubhouse Lawyer and will tear the team apart.  I would almost bet you money he was a TO fan while he was in Dallas.  Pick you role models carefully Tashard.  The media may love him, but the staff has a scornful ton when discussing him.

Maybe this fullback from Georgia will come into Dallas learn the offense and secure a spot while protecting Romo on blitzes.

Draft

Anytime I start analyzing a Cowboys' draft, I want to wait a few days to let the excitement wear off.
So here are my thoughts.
I do not think need should be considered when rating a draft, with the exceptional of two players rated the same.

1.  Smith-Possible stalwart for the next decade in Dallas.   But....
For some reason, I just cannot get too excited when I watch the film.  He played right tackle at USC and wasn't as dominate as I expected.  Yes, as Red Jesus says, Smith finishes all of his plays and never quits, but he was weaker than most dominant college players.  I view his rankings as similar to the college scouting for 5 stars players.  He is 20, has long arms, quickness and should continue to add weight and hopefully become dominant.
Do I think he was the 7th best NON-QB in the draft.  NO,  I hope the scouts are correct on his potential.  That said I would have drafted him if I couldn't get Peterson strictly out of need.

2.  Carter- S, as you know I am obsessed with explosive quickness, not necessarily straight line speed, but quickness.   Carter had it in abundance prior to his knee injury.  When you watch film of the the other two high picks from Carolina, it is Carter who jumps off the screen with his closing speed.  He is lightning when an opening occurs.   I like the pick. This guy with Sean Lee will turn the Cowboys blitz packages into a delayed explosion and better yet, those 8 yards gains that Bradie James and Brooking cannot get to, will be stopped 3 yards and a punt.

3.  Murray- He is a better back than Choice and was much more productive that Jones was in college.  (Marion Who?)
When he was on the field at Norman they were a much better team, even a title contender..  BUT.  Jones cannot stay healthy and Murray appears to be more of the same.  Great pick if  he and Jones can alternate getting hurt.   Romo will love him if he plays or practices enough to get on the field.

4-7, I have no idea.   History says the free agent signings will be more productive.  I do like getting a player of the year from any conference, so maybe WR Harris will make the team and do more than just block on kickoffs.

So excuse my lack of excitement, considering the recent draft blunders in Dallas.
Last year with Dez Bryant and Lee looks promising.  I hope that Red Jesus had some impact on the later rounds to stop the horrible drafting in Dallas.  He said they did not draft for need and choose the best player available, like his father scout would have suggested.

Team/Cowboy Draft Thoughts

I'm very excited about Tyron Smith who at 20 should be able to put on a few more pounds without sacrificing athleticism.  With luck he'll stay healthy and nail down a tackle slot for 10 years.  Gosselin liked our 4th-6th picks and I'm certainly crossing my fingers on the O-Guard Arkin where we need some youth desperately.  I hate that we had to spend a premium pick on a RB so soon after picking Felix Jones.  That hurts.  Murray is a dynamic player who can also catch and I can see him challenging for serious playing time right away.  My biggest question is Round 2 where we grab a guy currently in rehab for knee surgery.  A pretty big risk for Round 2.

Gosselin reserved his only 2 'A' grades to the Bills and Ravens.  Ozzie Newsome and his staff are draft wizards for certain.  Our division rivals each rec'd C's from Gosselin, while the 'boys got a 'B'.

I can't for the life of me absolve Atlanta for what they gave up for Julio Jones.  Strange.  Detroit is on their way.  I think Carolina made a huge mistake.  Ingram and Payton in NO should be a perfect match.

S

Gosselin/Draft Expert

I'm fortunate to have NFL expert Rick Gosselin in Dallas where I can read his insights daily.  This year Gosselin was the top Round 1 forecaster among 119 posted NFL mock drafts, and this was the 3rd time in the last 10 years that he has finished first.  He had predicted correctly 29 of the players taken in round 1 and matched 12 of those with the correct team, both top figures.  And, over the past 5 years he has accumulated the most points for those categories among all published 'experts'.  Finally, his average of 85 of his top 100 players actually going in the top 100 is ranked first among all entries during the past 5 years.
