NFL Top 100

Rick Gosselin's column last week referenced the NFL Network's listing of the top 100 all-time NFL players.  He was part of this panel of coaches, players, and media who voted.  He published his top 25 along with the network's placing of each player.  Interesting........

Rank Player Position NFL Films

1 Jim Brown FB 2
2 Johnny Unitas QB 6
3 Lawrence Taylor OLB 3
4 Don Hutson WR 9
5 Barry Sanders HB 17
6 Jerry Rice WR 1
7 Reggie White DE 7
8 Joe Greene DT 13
9 Joe Montana QB 4
10 Dick Butkus MLB 10
11 Otto Graham QB 16
12 Deacon Jones DE 15
13 Bob Lilly DT 26
14 Gale Sayers HB 22
15 Anthony Munoz OT 12
16 Dick Lane CB 30
17 John Hannah G 24
18 O.J. Simpson HB 40
19 Lance Alworth WR 38
20 Roger Staubach QB 46
21 Rod Woodson CB/S 41
22 Walter Payton HB 5
23 Peyton Manning QB 8
24 Joe Schmidt MLB 84
25 Sammy Baugh QB/P 14

I know JC will be thrilled with the network's listing of Jerry Rice as the all-time best player.  Also jumping out to me is how high they had Manning and how low they had Barry Sanders.  Walter Payton 5th but Barry Sanders 17th?  Stuuuupid.

Jerry Rice as number 1 makes the entire list a waste of time.

A WR? Seriously?  A WR in a scheme that is still successful today, that was designed by a genius coach to place a WR in isolation?

I may have to make a separate post to discuss this issue later.

A few rules to live by on greatest players ever.
1.  What happened when they left the team?  The best cannot be replaced in a manner even close.  (TO put this to rest at SF)
2.  How important is the position to the success of the Team? Is a WR in the Top 5?  Hmmm- QB, RB, OT, CB, Center, DE.   Rice was not exactly a blocker or game explosion like Randy Moss.
           3.  Physically or Mentally were they a step above? Were they recognized the entire career as the best.  Please,  Sterling Sharpe was his equal with better skill sets until he got hurt.  Super Bowl wins for Walsh changed the perception of Rice and Montana.
4.  Were they as significantly more important than the coach or other players?  Lets See.  1. Walsh 2. Montana. 3. Young. 4. Ronnie Lott . 5 Charles Haley.

Gosselins rankings are much better than what the NFL networks are. I saw the Jerry Rice as the top and disagreed but I could see where he got it beause a consensus was needed by all th panel member and Rice would obviously be in the top 3 of most. I agree completely with your thoughts- Montana at 4 --- he is not a top 4 QB! ( is still a little high. You have to place Johnny U and Otto over him and can argue for others very effectively. Sanders was the best player I have seen play. I agree w/ Jim Brwn at the top. Surprised Deacon was not in the top 10. Glas Gosselin moved Roger up clearly better than 46

A WR?
A WR in a scheme ahead to make put him in isolation?
A WR that TO actually put up more impressive numbers in the same offense?

I may have to make a separate post to discuss this issue.
