Another Sports Myth Debunked or is it just Hyperbole.

Tim MacMahon addressed a subject that the media seems unwilling to accept.

Is Kobe the best person to take a last second shot?  Recently 80% of NBA voted for Kobe.
The media has screamed at us about Kobe's clutch shooting for years, well here are the real facts.
Take Dirk over Kobe on a shot with 24 seconds remaining or less.

"In fact, no player who has attempted at least 50 potential game-winning or tying shots in the final 24 seconds of games over the last 15 years has been more efficient than Nowitzki. Dirk has drilled 26 of 67 such shots, according to ESPN Stats & Information. That's a .388 shooting percentage, well above the league average of .297.

It also compares favorably to Kobe, who has hit 37 of 117 shots (.316) in those situations. "

I saw where he Kobe is at 28% in the playoffs for his career.   The NBA average ???  28%

The excuses being made by Kobe's supporters:
He creates more shots for others, but they keep throwing him the ball for last second attempts.
82games.com  gives Kobe the edge but they use the last 5 minutes of games for the past 5 years. Even though Kobe shoots around 40 percent while Dirk is around 45% with a higher FT percentage.

For the record, Lebron is the best in the last 5 minutes during the last 4 years.  Even while being played out of position in Miami and trying to make his new teammate happy he still shoots higher percentages than Kobe.
James also has more assist, rebounds and steals during the last 4 years.

Yes, Bill Simmons has thrown these numbers around for a while; he knows and puts in print how Dirk is the best pressure player in the league.

I'm stunned that Barkley has been saying to everyone that Dirk is the hardest player to cover in basketball and the best player in this series. I never thought to hear him say such things.

You are correct about Barkley.

It is a big change from his Dirk cannot produce comments when the Mavs lost in the playoffs.
