Rise of the Allen Eagles

When I moved to a small but rapidly growing suburb called Allen in 2001, primarily because of the highly-rated school system, little did I know that I would get to witness the rise of one of the nation’s top football programs, if not THE best.  The high school team played in a 25 year-old stadium and had little or no tradition of winning.  They made a good hire around that time in Joe Martin, who had just won state at Garland.  Martin started laying the ground work, and quickly made it to state in 2003, getting routed by the *)#%@ Dragons, and then decided to call it a career.  A job everyone considered to be a plum surprisingly went to Martin’s assistant and O-coordinator, Tom Westerberg.  I had little appreciation for what was coming.

Westerberg went 19-6 during his first 2 seasons, my daughter was in elementary school, and I paid little attention.  In 2006, the team won district and ran to state again, but again got pounded by the *$^% Dragons.  How could I know that the district was now in a vise-grip by the Eagles and wouldn’t be relinquished?  2007; an undefeated regular season, but a flame-out in the first round of the playoffs.  I still didn’t know what was coming.  The population was growing rapidly, new schools feeding the high school, the engine was running, but not yet up to speed.

The big news in 2008, Allen would take on the nation’s top-rated team, the Euless Trinity Trojans.  Down went the Eagles 30-17, but the loss seemed to make the team figure out they were close.  Playoffs, Eagles run to the 4th round and Trinity is waiting.  After, the paper said the Eagles “bullied the bullies” on their way to a 34-21 win.  Two weeks later, the 1st state championship, Tom Westerberg had arrived, the Allen Eagles had arrived.  I saw a couple of playoff games, my daughter was in the 5th grade, I still didn’t appreciate what was in front of me.

In 2011 the Allen Eagles were ranked #1 in the nation to start the pre-season by MaxPreps and others.  I started to appreciate that everyone in the business of football knew what this was.  A football-crazy county in talent rich DFW, with a rapidly growing population, 1 school, and a coach who knew what he was doing.  However the team was actually overrated and went down in Round 2 of the playoffs.  I could see it coming.  The defense was porous and the offense 1-dimensional.  I couldn’t know that all of the ground work was about to produce the culmination of the program.

I sat in sparkling new Eagle Stadium in September 2012 dreading the game.  The %#*@ Dragons were in town and we had a brand new team to go with the new stadium.  National headlines proclaimed Allen to be a community with a warped sense of order, spending $60mm on a football stadium.  And worse, we had 1 state championship for all the expectations, and we were likely to be embarrassed  on our home field by the defending state champs.  I just couldn’t know that the class of seniors and juniors on the field in front of me were the culmination of all the planning, all the summer workouts, all the tough out of district scheduling, the coaching continuity.  This was the group.  24-0 Eagles.  Dragons slayed.

It is December 2013 and the Allen Eagles are the class of Texas and maybe the entire nation.  Now we say “3 titles in 6 years”!  The classes of 2012 and 2013 were the right mix of talent, confidence, character, and drive.  They were the ones who Tom Westerberg knew were coming.  Westerberg has won district 8 years running and is 100-10 during that time.  He takes on all comers, scheduling Carroll, Cedar Hill, Longview, Coppell, Trinity, etc. in non-district.  He now has the model program with almost 1,200 kids playing football in grades 7-12 and parents (like Kevin Murray) moving into the district so their kids can take part in it.  He is (importantly) not afraid to play youth, like Murray last year and a sophomore CB and right tackle this year.  Talent plays.  He has also finally learned to put some of that talent on the defensive side of the ball.  This year we have 3 3-star players on the defense going to BCS schools.  Next year we have 3 4-star players coming back on offense.  The engine is now starting to feed itself.

My daughter cheered on the field at Cowboy Stadium and took part in a state championship celebration with Governor Rick Perry.  She figures we just go out and win state, ho-hum.  I think I get it now.

Kyler Murray

I remarked to people around Allen all year that we had something really special in Kyler Murray and we had to capitalize on it while it lasts.  He was rolling through good teams in about 2 and a half quarters without hardly breaking a sweat.  I came across this piece about Murray by the Rivals Texas A&M writer.  This makes me think I was even more right that I thought I was.  I hate the term "dual-threat" because it usually means a small running QB without a clue when it comes to a real passing attack.  They usually throw a lot of swing passes and wide-receiver screens.  Murray though I quickly realized this year was reluctant to run and when I started looking at the numbers (11 yards per attempt!) it was becoming apparent that he is a different animal and it started to make sense why he has offers from the Notre Dame's, Ohio St's, and other blue bloods of the college universe.  Read on...........

Having a dead period around the holidays typically means that there's not a lot going on in recruiting. Nonetheless, there was plenty of high school talent to watch this past weekend out at AT&T in the Texas state championship games that started Thursday and finished up late Saturday night.

Even with a year left in high school, Kyler Murray is already a polished quarterback.
No one stood out more than Allen quarterback Kyler Murray, who led the Eagles to their second consecutive Class 5A Division I state championship with a 63 to 28 victory over Pearland. Murray had perhaps the best game of his career with numbers that are truly mind blowing: 11 of 14 passing for 280 yards and four touchdowns; 13 carries for 188 yards and another touchdown. Overall, Murray handled the ball 27 times and averaged 17.33 yards per snap. That average per play should dictate that he reach the end zone about five times and sure enough he garnered a touchdown about once every five times he handled the ball.

Murray was so efficient that Allen had the ball for a little over seven minutes in the first half and scored four touchdowns (their fifth came on a kickoff return). Pearland held the ball for 23 minutes, forced two turnovers, and ran the ball relatively well; nonetheless, their strategy was rendered pointless by Murray's ability to strike quickly.

Even so, no one else in the state stirs Allen's drink like Murray does. Last season, Murray (who considers himself a passer first and foremost) played behind an offensive line and with a receiving corps that was oriented toward moving the ball on the ground. As a result, Murray was more of a zone read quarterback and operated off of play action in the passing game. In fact, Murray even split time for a while with senior receiver Oliver Pierce at the position (which seems ludicrous in restrospect).Murray's speed and elusiveness served him well in that role but it wasn't one that he was entirely suited for or happy with.

This season, big tackles Bobby Evans and Gregory Little manage to give Murray time to hold the ball that he didn't have last season and junior Jalen Guyton provides him with a downfield threat that he lacked. As a result, everyone has found out about Murray what he already knew; he is an accomplished passer far beyond his years. The son of former Texas A&M quarterback Kevin Murray, the younger Murray has the footwork and delivery of his father who completed 59% of his passes in 1985 when such a completion percentage was exceptional rather than the norm as it is now. This season, Murray averaged approximately 11 yards an attempt and threw 46 touchdowns; throw in another 19 touchdowns on the ground and Murray accounted for four touchdowns a game running and passing.

There's a tendency to compare Murray with A&M Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel since both aren't the 6 foot 4 pocket passers that most college programs crave. There is one other similarity between the two; both of them overwhelm you with numbers but it's the memories of individual plays that stay with you. Murray had a number of those on Saturday beginning with the Eagles' second drive of the game when he took off on a 57 yard run in which he darted, feinted, and weaved through a Pearland defense that looked like a Pee Wee team trying to tackle one of their fathers in a pick up game. In the second half, Murray moved to the outside off of play action, saw an opening, and just turned on the jets like he was the fastest player on the field (which he was) for a 36 yard touchdown run.

Murray also had a couple of throws that only he could make, touch passes that would get virtually any other quarterback at any other level in trouble. He hit Guyton on a 21 yard pass in the second quarter where Guyton was running away from Murray to his right on a crossing route and there was a defender on Guyton's hips. Guyton is essentially running parallel to Murray and has turned upfield; if Murray underthrows the ball a tick it gets batted away; if he overthrows it Guyton can't get to it. Instead, Murray laid it right in there over Guyton's shoulder. In the third quarter, Murray faced a blitz and saw Cole Carter get a step on his defender on a corner route. He readjusted his delivery and delivered a mortar round that dropped in right over Carter's shoulder who also had a defender on his hip. Again, it had to be perfect from 18 yards out and it was.

It's those types of plays that draw you to Murray as a prospect. As a runner, he sees things on the periphery of his vision and always is avoiding danger; on his 57 yard run in the first quarter he just would slow down, find a blocker or space, and then speed back up but he never seemed to be in a hurry or overextend himself. His vision also pays off in the passing game; he can avoid rushers and find receivers to the edge of his field of vision like he did Guyton.

But if you want to compare to him to Manziel (and I don't), you have to stop where their passing ability is concerned. Murray is more advanced right now than Manziel and in fact he's a lot farther along than most college quarterbacks period. Footwork is the hardest thing for a prospect to learn and yet it's probably the most important technical aspect of the position. Murray never makes throws without his feet being set at the proper width even when he's on the move.

In addition, Murray has a compact, quick release. He doesn't drop his elbow or hold the ball low and the ball snaps out of there. All of those things enable him to put the type of touch on the ball that he displayed on the two aforementioned passes and also get the ball out before the pass rush can get there.

Most of all, the game doesn't move very fast for Murray. He sees more than most people on the field and combines that with the calm demeanor of someone much older. Nothing fazes him; on the second of two touch passes I described earlier, he adjusted his delivery in the face of someone coming right at him. On his long run in the first quarter, he moved about the field leisurely and in an unhurried fashion despite the fact that he was the fastest person out there.

There's a tendency to think that Murray doesn't know what it's like to face adversity because Allen simply runs away from people every week. However, last week in the state semi finals against DeSoto, the Eagles found themselves trailing with under nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter 35-20 with their season and their legacy on the line. Murray whipped them downfield twice to tie the score (including a two point conversion) into a ferocious north wind and wet conditions and accounted for all the yardage himself via two passes and a run. Murray then accounted for all of the yardage on Allen's final 60 yard drive, virtually all of it coming on the ground due to the wind. With 0:18 to go in the game and Allen facing a potential 41 yard field goal into the wind (I can't emphasize that enough), Murray took things into his own hands and ran 24 yards for the game winning touchdown.

On a day in atrocious conditions when Murray basically had two quarters where he couldn't throw the ball and versus one of the better defenses in the state, he accounted for all but eight of his team's 395 yards of total offense and three touchdowns with no turnovers and produced 22 points into the wind when there was no margin for error.

That's the definition of poise.

Murray will never get his due in terms of prospect rankings due to his height. People who watch him play point to the success of other quarterbacks such as Manziel, Russell Wilson, and Drew Brees in that regard but mostly it's about people missing the essence of the position which is the ability to make good decisions rather than a player's physical attributes. To paraphrase former Super Bowl coach Jimmy Johnson, quarterbacking is about the mistakes that you don't make rather than the plays that you do make. Murray won a state title last season when he had to be more runner than passer because of the team around him rather than his own skill set; even so, as a first year sophomore starter he threw just one interception in the playoffs and that came off of a pass that bounced off of a receiver's hands. This season, he evolved to being a game changer, someone who could put a team on his back and carry them and yet he still just had nine interceptions in 16 games.

Dallas Morning News columnist Goose Gosselin made the point in a recent column that NFL teams trade up in the first round only for defensive linemen and quarterbacks. In other words, the league puts a significant premium on those two positions. The 2015 class in Texas is loaded; it's one of the better classes in recent memory with five star caliber prospects at multiple positions. Even so, none of them have produced at Murray's level over a two year period in terms of either numbers or hardware. In addition, you can't say that he's excelled against inferior competition; the Eagles have beaten four teams that have reached the Class 5A state finals in his two years at the helm and three others who had undefeated regular seasons.

In fact, following Gosselin's line of reasoning based on his 30 plus years of observing the NFL, you can certainly make a case that Murray is the top prospect in the state for 2015. Not only that, you can definitely make the case that he is the top quarterback in the state not just in the class of 2015 but the top one right now period.

Red Sox

In a sports culture where talent wins, it really remarkable to see a team shed talent, bring in lesser talent "character guys", find the right coach, and then go from 93 losses to World Series champs.  These Red Sox were the best in the league almost from day 1 this year, but there is no way I look at them and get awed by the talent.  It's a real tribute to coaching, character, chemistry and all those fuzzy words that we normally ignore because you can't quantify them.  Good players, good attitude, well-rounded.  Very impressive and to think this franchise went around 85 years without a championship, pretty cool.  And of course I love that it comes at the pain of the Yankees.

Dallas Update is it better or Worse

There have been too many questions about the Dallas and the expectations.

Offense:

1.) Dallas is 4th in Points Scored.
This is a huge improvement for a team that has ranked 15th the last two years.
Outcome-Callahan has been an improvement.

2. )Yardage gained 14th, down from 6th and 11th the previous two years.
Wasted argument when they did not score points.

3.)  4 years ago (2010)the offense finished 7th in points and yardage and had a 6-10 record.

4.) Margin of victory is highest since Wades first year following Big Bill

5.) Turnovers are down. 6th in league from 25th last year.

6.) Time of Possession-16th . 13th last year. 30:17 from 30:25

Callahan is not the issue.
This offense is Avg at best with a terrible OLINE.
Because of the Points Scored this offense is better than last year.

I still think that turning Romo loose will produce a better team since they currently rank 29th in the number of plays the offense runs, which keeps this awful defense on the field.

Deion vs Calvin Johnson.

The big debate on TV today was the worst GM in Football saying the Deion could shut down Calvin Johnson. I even had a 20 something person say that Johnson was faster.  I just laughed and told him about the 4.19 with borrowed shoes he ran in sweat pants.

Stats:
CJ  - 6 ft5 240lbs
DS - 6 ft1 200lbs

Close enough and Deion was a big CB.  Some sites had him at 6ft 2.

40yd:
CJ 4.35 great.
DS- 4.27  this was with warm ups and borrowed shoes.   He is just faster.

Deion was the Quickest Defensive Player I have ever seen.
Rumors out of San Fran was that in practice Jerry Rice would blow a gasket because he couldn't get open with Deion trying to stop him.
It is highly underrated that Deion was a student of the game.
The interceptions he had were always because he baited teams to challenge him.
The players he had problems with had to be specific route runners and had accurate QB's.
CJ is great, but he doesn't have the most accurate QB..
Michael Irvin physically beat up Deion a couple of times and had route running to a science and maybe the most accurate strong arm qb in history throwing to him.

Quickness is the reason I think that Deion would CJ struggle.
I would expect interceptions out of Stafford a couple of times.
CJ couldn't be stopped completely but he would not go off.

I think CJ is the closest WR talent to Randy Moss that I have even seen.
He is not as quick, fast or acrobatic as Moss but he is a better competitor and a beast.
Moss was 4.25 40yd with 40 inch vertical and never seemed to try or work out.

America's Team

I frequently argue with people about the Cowboys franchise and the almost unmatched history of excellence.  This is what we grew up with, and why this last 15 years is so painful.

Here are the years that the Cowboys made it to at least the NFC championship game:

1966 - NFL championship game
1967 - NFL championship game
1968 - Eastern Conference championship game
1969 - Eastern Conference championship game
1970 - Super Bowl
1971 - Super Bowl (champs)
1972 - NFC championship game
1973 - NFC championship game
1975 - Super Bowl
1977 - Super Bowl (champs)
1978 - Super Bowl
1980 - NFC championship game
1981 - NFC championship game
1982 - NFC championship game

Taking stock here, the Cowboys reached at least the conference championship game in 14 of 17 years!  How can you put that into perspective?  Can you imagine the level of excellence to be at worst 1 game away from the NFL championship game 14 out of 17 years?  Extending through the 1985 season, the Cowboys had 20 consecutive winning seasons, won the division 13 out of 20 years, and made the playoffs 18 out of 20.  This was the legacy of Schramm, Landry, and Brandt, and why the Cowboys took their place with the Celtics and Yankees as the best and most valuable franchises in North America.

Then they stumbled onto Jimmy Johnson and made a last charge into history before Jerry the GM took final, total control and steered us off a cliff:

1992 - Super Bowl (champs)
1993 - Super Bowl (champs)
1994 - NFC championship game
1995 - Super Bowl (champs)

Add it up and it's 30 seasons with 18 conference championship game appearances.  Johnson leaves, Jones takes over personnel and it's 16 seasons and counting without getting that far again.

Radio

Today Tim Cowlishaw replaces the great Randy Galloway on the DFW ESPN drive-time afternoon show alongside Matt Moseley.  I'm hopeful because I dislike the national ESPN show and the Ticket buffoons during my drive home.  I've been listening to Mad Dog but I like to switch during the drive.  I'll report back in a few days after giving Tim a chance.

S

J.J. the Clueless

I caught a bit of J.J.'s radio show today and a caller was riding him for the Cowboy's mediocrity.  J.J.'s answer: "how did you like those 3 Super Bowls?".....18 years ago!  Then he gave the same crap as always, the day he doesn't call the shots is the day he no longer owns the team, blah, blah, blah.

It has become such a major unpleasant experience to be a Cowboys fan.  The current generation of fans is learning that to be a Cowboy fan means to hope for a surprise 10-6 finish and some miracle run through the playoffs.  15 years of average or below-average football and we're only mentioned for negative stuff: the Romo meltdowns, the Dez blow-ups, the lack of playoff success, bad trades (Roy Williams), bad drafts, criminal acts (Josh Brent), on and on.  Our great franchise is a joke!

Talking HS Football

A little mid-season HS football talk as we slog through district play.  I think I am more impressed with Allen at this stage of the season than any year I can remember.  The average margin of victory so far is 49-19.  They have impressive wins over Southlake, Cedar Hill, Hebron, and Coppell, with the closest game being 19 points.  I've seen a couple of polls listing them 2nd nationally.

Just like last year, I have my eyes on DeSoto.  National polls have them right behind Allen and they have even more impressive scores; average margin 52-20.  They have whipped Euless Trinity, Cedar Hill, and Tulsa Union among others.  I could see another collision coming with Allen.

This is certainly the most talented Allen team if you look at Division 1 talent.  This morning the paper had an announcement that an Allen kid became the first member of the class of 2016 to be rated a 5-star by Scout.com.  Here is the current list of Allen recruits that I know of:

Greg Little - Offensive Tackle - 5 Star class of 2016 (he is listed at 6'5" 288)
Bobby Evans - Offensive Tackle - 4 Star class of 2015 - committed to Oklahoma
Kyler Murray - QB - 4 Star class of 2015 - offers from A&M, Clemson, Arkansas, many others
Christian Sam - OLB - 3 Star class of 2014 - committed to Arizona St.
Tay Evans - OLB - 3 Star class of 2014 - committed to Oklahoma
Chad Adams - Safety - 3 Star class of 2014 - committed to Arizona St.
Mayomi Olootu - Corner - 3 Star class of 2014 - committed to Northern Illinois
Tejan Koroma - Center - 2 Star class of 2014 - committed to BYU

NFL Rosters

We don't necessarily win like we should, but our buddy Les Miles can certainly recruit and develop players.  Here are the top 12 college affiliations for the start of the 2013 NFL season.

1. USC — 40 players
2. LSU — 39
3. Miami — 38
4. Georgia — 36
5. Florida State — 31
5. Texas — 31
7. Alabama — 30
7. Cal — 30
7. Tennessee — 30
10. Ohio State — 27
10. Oregon — 27
12. Florida — 26

LSU also has the highest concentration of 1 position: an incredible 11 defensive backs in the NFL.  And these 39 players will soon be joined by Mettenberger, Landry, Beckham, Hill, Johnson, Loston, and I lose count.  It's remarkable really.  Oregon is getting hard to ignore.  Where is Oklahoma?

Ryan's Departure

I've been trying to figure out what to write about the departure of Nolan Ryan.  I can't work up a lot of hate for Jon Daniels although he certainly deserves a lot of the blame for this.  He's very sharp and knew he would win eventually because he had leverage, while Ryan did not.  Nolan Ryan just is not a guy to shake hands and do nothing.  And, they couldn't both be in charge.

The thing is, it's always hard to determine exactly what he should get credit for or not.  But I'm so sad to see him go, because at the end of the day Nolan Ryan made baseball in the rest of America care about the formerly hapless Texas Rangers.  He made the Rangers matter.  Credibility is the word most often used, and I agree with it.  He made them legit.  He made it impossible to ignore them.  How many lasting decisions he made, I'm not sure.  But, the stories abound about the love that the staff had for him.  He was a leader, when the Rangers desperately needed one.  He made a difference in the culture.  The franchise is immeasurably better because he spent 6 years as the face.

Now Jon Daniels will sail alone.  Like I said, I can't really hate him.  He's made mistakes, but he has built a contender that baseball people only recently called a top-5 model franchise.  But, he will have a short leash with the public after this feud with the beloved Ryan.  The franchise will now completely sink or swim based on his decisions, so here we go.  But I will miss Nolan Ryan in that box every night and the comfort it seemed to bring.

Jimmy Johnson

There is a book about great rivalries in publication and one of the quotes from the book is crazy.
Switzer and Bowden laughed about how many Titles Johnson cost them.

In a five year span, Johnson beat the top ranked Sooners twice and FL State 4 times.  Two of these cost them the national title.  Bowden lost to Miami the last 4 years and twice it was his only loss and cost him NC.

After that first year, when Miami when 8-5 the dominance began.

Year 2-  Losses to Florida in first game. But then a loss Tennessee in Sugar as 2nd rank team. This loss cost him a National Championship. Switzer won it  after number 1 and 2 lost.  Miami beat them sooner 27-14 that year.
Year 3- Sickening loss to Penn State in the game that I still cannot comprehend. The dominated Penn State.
Year 4- Undefeated. NC Year.
Year 5- Blew a game Holtz 31-30 in South Bend. That cost him the National Championship Holtz then only had to beat WVA for the title.

Basically he played for the NC the last 4 years and only won ONE.

Then 5 years in Dallas and 2 Super bowls in his last two years.

He was magically maniacal.

J.

Jerry said Ratliff was LEGAL issue.

It had to be something for to give up a  pro bowl player that they drafted.
My previous post had legal as the top reason.

Jerry is going to spend some money with lawyers getting his cap space back!

College Coaching Rivalries

The Morning News brought this up and I thought it would be fun to look some up:

Barry Switzer 12-5 over Tom Osborne
Bob Stoops 9-6 over Mack Brown
Darrell Royal 14-5 over Frank Broyles
Bo Schembechler 5-4-1 over Woody Hayes
John McKay 5-3-2 over Ara Parseghian
Bear Bryant 13-5 over Shug Jordan
Bobby Bowden 8-5-1 over Steve Spurrier

S

JAY RATLIFF RELEASE

There is a pungent odor with this decision.
The organization has refused to say much all year about Ratliff.
I know that last year he was help back by teammates from attacking Jerry Jones, but I don't think that is the problem.  He publicly rejected the teams training staff, but that is his decision and not worth the cap hit.

To start the season on the PUP list for a hamstring confused everyone.
In the meantime, the radio the talking heads said that he looked great and was very trim all year. so it is obvious he was still working out..

His contract will be nearly $7 Million in a cap hit next year, so this cannot be a business decision. The Def Line is so thin they are playing people off the street..

Take your pick.
1.) Medical things that cannot be discussed
2.) Legal issues outside the NFL.
3.) Suddenly cannot preform. (Ridiculous)

Hitterish

So I am sitting here watching Molina at bat in the 6th and the color man says he this?

"He hasn't got himself going, but he looks "Hitterish" to me."

Ha.  What? The play by play laughed and said I like that word in a tongue in cheek slap at him.

Cowboys Pain

It has been a rough three weeks for me to watch.
I did not expect much better than 8-8 and 3-3 is all I can expect.
But, I am starting to think that 11-5 is a new coach away.
The Defense is really the worse than I feared. The other teams never get off the field and run a million plays.
How Bad is Defense:
2013- 105 Rushing yards a game and 308 yards passing.
2012-125 Rushing-230 yd passing
2011- 99 Rushing- 244 yd passing
2010  108 Rushing-243 Passing
Games
(1)Giants 478yds  Boys 331 lucky win , Dallas actually ran more plays because of the six turnovers.
(2)Chiefs 313 Boys 318  - KC 65 plays Dallas 61
(3). Rams 232 Boys 396 but the Rams ran 8 more offensive plays than Dallas. 67 to 59.
Bradford is just not very good.

Offensively
2013- 85 Rushing-265 passing
2012-79 Rushing-296 passing
2011- 113 Rushing-263 passing
2010- 112 Rushing - 253 passing

San Diego -  In the pre-game the pundits were discussing the fact that Miles Austin was going to be out again and the the Coaching Staff (Red Jesus) wanted to run the ball.  They seemed to think that the Rams small Defensive was the NFL norm.  This strategy even though the Chargers were terrible in passing defense.    One scout said,  "I don't know why they wouldn't attack them with Romo and Dez"
The outcome- A toned down offense that led to a lucky first half lead and another loss.

The defense is not giving up big plays, but they cannot stop anyone.
Bend don't break is definitely better than the last two years, but not that much better.
Charges 506 yds on 70 plays. Boys 319 total yards on 56 plays and 92 rushing yds when they schemed for it.  That is bad coaching.

Denver- Fear of embarrassment  is the best thing for this coaching staff..
Red knew it was score points or lose and it was great.  Romo was fantastic and Denver had no idea what to do.  The entire game Dallas ran sets with no RB's and Romo picked them apart without Miles Austin.
The interception was gut wrenching.  I cannot explain several things on the two plays in that drive. But lets start with how a 3 man rush and a RB in the backfield got pressure on Romo.
I cannot blame the offense or an interception for the loss.
51 Points Allowed!. Bend and don't Break the SCOREBOARD is all this Defense can do.
517 yards on 73 plays.  Dallas 522 on 54 plays .

A game Dallas seemed to be even was 4 min difference in time of possession.

I left this game with optimism, thinking Garrett would understand his players.

Washington:
A win and I feel worse than I did after the Denver game.
The Redskins are not talented and lack depth yet the held the Cowboys to 213 total yards.
The skins had 433 in 75 plays to Dallas 50 plays.
I am sick of watching this terrible preparation and hoping not to lose vs trying to win.

I have no faith Dallas will finish 8-8.
Thank goodness that Philly has given up 42 yards more than Dallas or they would be last.
They are 25th in Scoring Defense.

The saving grace is Romo and the passing offense is scoring Points and is 2nd in the league thru 6 games.

Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers is really a great QB in the great scheme the Packers use. I rate him behind only Manning and Brady. True to form, he is having another strong year and I expect him to shatter the all time QB rating by the time he retires.
I was asked  yesterday, Farve or Rodgers? Tough question.
But!  Rodgers is definitely in the Diva category with Farve
.
He has made passive aggressive remarks his entire career and I have yet to see any charisma from this guy. Then an old teammates started complaining about his locker room and I blew it off  I think this just sour grapes from a past WR not getting enough attention.)

Then this weekend, he gripes about a tackle being low on a WR.
 It was low!
But the cause of the leg his was Rodgers pass. His pass was high and he hung his WR out and he could not get down to protect himself for the collision.
Rodgers Fault!

What is worse?
A.  DB trying to dislodge the ball and when the WR ducks he gets hit in the head causing a concussion and a penalty.
B. DB tackling below the waist and possibly hurting the players?

The NFL maybe turning into MLB and the inside pitch.
 It is a NO-WIN situation.

ANDY REID

How good is this guy?   14 years 9 playoffs. 5 title games.
(One huge blunder when he left his star QB in with a concussion at the Super Bowl.)

I think he is really a great coach, but with the Chargers improving and Denver a SB favorite he will need to really do something special to make the playoffs.

3 - 0 in Kansas City.
Kansas City was 2-14 last year for the second time in the last 5 years.

J

PS Chip Kelley.  Michael Vick is inaccurate!

Mullen has lost his mind.

An Ole Miss fan sent this to me:

"After the loss last Saturday, I was on the flight back to Starkville, and I was reading the SixPackSpeak message board, like I usually do following a game," Mullen told reporters in a special news conference this afternoon.  "As I read the repeated calls for my firing, Les' firing, and the general disdain for our offensive gameplan in the second half, I thought: what would these guys do if they had the chance to actually make those calls?"

"So after giving it some thought, I decided, why not give them that chance.  This Saturday, we're letting fans call the second half plays."

Starting in the third quarter, fans will look to the jumbotron in the south endzone before each play that MSU runs on offense.  There they will find a list of four plays that Offensive Coordinator Les Koenning and Head Coach Dan Mullen are considering calling.  From that list, fans will be able, through their CSpireTM powered device, to choose the play that they want seen called.  Voting will take place from the time the play clock resets to when there are 25 seconds remaining.  Should MSU have to go into a hurry-up offense mode, the number of plays available for fan voting will be reduced to two.

Honey Badger

I don't know how he does it, but nothing changed.

As a backup, he is second on the team in tackles and forced the fumble that won the game in week 1.

Texas A&M Money Men.

I had posted prior to the Aggie's joining the SEC that the school had more endowment funds than all of the other SEC schools combined.

Then a couple of days ago the Morning news posted the amount of Money that was raised at College Station during the last year of the SEC, Sumlin and JOHNNY FOOTBALL.

The Aggie's raised $740 Million, a 70% increase from Sept 2012 thru Aug 2013
 ($559Million increase)

This is insane!

I saw where Saban increase Bama from $90Million to $120 in his first year as a point of reference.

I would offer Sumlin an $8 million a year contract today and make him too expensive for the NFL to go after a minority coach with an imaginative offense and great personality.

J.

20 Reasons to Praise Football

I cannot even explain how much I enjoy the college football season.

1.  I hope Ole Miss goes 10-2, which is impossible, but would be a blast and make H Freeze the next Longhorn Head Coach.
2.  Mack Brown-  It is too hard to even say again and again.  Gray is better than Malcom Brown!!!
3.  USC- Too much Talent for this output.  Kiffing is worse than I thought. With UCLA and their great Soph QB, it is going to be fun in LA.
4. Muschamp is the new Les Miles.  Great talent with no offensive identity.  They dominated Miami and couldn't win.  Hardest team for me to watch in College.
5. Arkansas is pounding the ball with the new Coach.  Well here comes the real men also known as the SEC.   If he can win, he deserves a pay raise.  It will not happen anytime soon.
6. Auburn- I like the coach as you know. If he is able to maintain a positive atmosphere after they start losing he will be a great coach.
7. MSTATE- Coach Mullen has lost his mind.  Lucky for him that, Haughton product, Prescott was given a chance to play because of an injury and maybe Mullen cannot ignore the truth about which QB makes his team work better.
8.  Ohio State- Does Meyer ever lose when he isn't playing Saban or Miles.
9.   Oregon- Stanford and UCLA hopefully will put a dent in this team to give them one loss.
10. Big 12- Art Briles to Austin?  League looks bad.
11. ACC - Again have the 2nd most NFL caliber players and it seems the coaches have improved enough to finally make an impact nationally.
12.  LSU-BAMA Game   It matters like Death and Taxes.
13.  Cam Cameron makes those incredible WR's at LSU important.  Please make Les not get too involved when he gets nervous.  While  you are there tell him Hill and Magee should get 30 carries a game.  Hillard and Blue 5 combined.
14.  Ga still frustrates me with the inconsistency.
15. Spurrier is still my hero.
16.  Michigan - ND 115000 people, when is too big an issue.
17.  Leach at Wash St is 2-1 losing at Auburn but beating the brat, as Bill King calls him, at USC
18.   Bama play Vandy-Tenn in SEC non-conf.
19.  Aggies play Misso-Kentucky
20.  LSU remaining schedule-  OUCH.  Georgia, Florida, Bama,Ole Miss, Aggies.
Any talk of tougher schedule is a homer for another conference.

20A.  Did I mention Manziel is fun to watch.

J.

JFF

During the last half century, I have only seen a four players that truly controlled football games. I must admit that Johnny Manziel qualifies and is as electric as any player that I have seen.

He is great.  Quickness, Vision, Toughness with Accuracy is just SPECIAL.

(S, you said it best.)
While Sumlin and the Aggie administration is waking up this sleeping giant in College Station.  Manziel has made the Aggies a national contender with his unique abilities on a team with below LSU, BAMA, GA, FLA or even South Carolina talent.

The last two QB's I saw do this:
1. Cam Newton- Undefeated NC with 5th best talent in SEC.
2. Doug Flutie- I have compared JFF to him since I watched the Fla game last year.  This is as big a compliment as I can give a player. He beat Bama his freshman year and I hated him, but the play never died with Flutie.
3. I don't have the vivid memories of Archie Manning, but I do think of him as the best College QB I had ever seen until Flutie.

I would have loved to have seen Roger "The Dodger" Staubach at Navy and Fran Tarkenton at GA.

Tebow, Frazier and Young were great, but they did not do these things with less talent than the opposition. Newton, Flutie and JFF win despite the talent.

Only Dorsett, Walker and Campbell were close to dominating a season from the RB position. Earl lost his NC to the Irish and it hurts to remember.

I will enjoy every game until Manziel leaves and I want it to be this year.
He is killing the LSU recruiting base.

J.

Bo Pelini cannot hide his stripes

I haven't made many positive post on Manic Bo, even while at LSU.

This made me laugh:
"Our crowd. What a bunch of f------ fair-weather f------ — they can all kiss my ass out the f------ door. 'Cause the day is f------ coming now. We'll see what they can do when I'm f------ gone."

Then Tommie Frazier made a comment that Bo needed to go.
Bo in his fashion then upset more Huskers fans with this.

"Since I came back here, I've embraced former players," Pelini said. "If he feels like that, then so be it. We don't need him. That's a shame. Until you've sat in this seat, until you've sat here and done it, anybody can have an opinion. It's easy to point fingers when you stand outside and throw stones. So I just take it for what it is."

Bo really didn't do anything bad with Frazier, but Tommie Boy is a well earned hero. Nebraska fans are truly great, but they do live too much with the "Osborne steroid and recruiting anyone past."

I just listened to him on Bill King and Bo can't apologize and sound sincere, he doesn't seem to understand how.

Romobilized

Sometimes being correct about the Cowboys gives me a stomach ache.

Romo was not healed from the start of the season.  A new throwing motion with less velocity and less accuracy is bothersome news for 2013 (and this was prior to the bruised Ribs against the Giants.)
The Boys look like the "same ole same ole" as related to the rest of the league.
8-8 seems about right if Romo's back improves during the year.

Offense:    I was upset with myself during the first quarter vs. the Giants when I had forgotten that part of the news conference announcing Bill Callahan.  The most important and disappointing parts was the comment that went like this.
" We will run the same offense, I will just help with play calling"
How did I miss it?  The same offense that Ed Reed and others made comments about being surprising simplistic!

The equation=Run into the line twice then pray for Romo on 3rd down.  If your behind turn Romo loose in the 2 min offense and score. Well if Romo is inaccurate, they will not win 9 games.

Defense:  It looks better, I am not sold on the coverage when a team spreads the field.  Eli seemed to throw at will when he went to a hurry up.
Ware is hidden on the corner so far, the positive is Lee, Carter and Church are flying to the ball.

Romo inaccurate in scrimmages?

Something sounds fishy regarding Romo's back surgery.

The Cowboys continue to play "Tough Guy" in the way they report injuries.  We have heard rumors for the past three or four years about Romo's back.   Now a surgery for a reported cyst, but a longer than normal recovery period followed.

Then Babe L. talked about seeing that for the first time in his career, Romo was missing receivers badly.

If this is a worse injury that we have been led to believe.  We are in for some bad years with JJ drafting players.

Omaha

I hated that LSU went down in 2 games, but the games were played fast enough that I could enjoy the play.  At times I miss the long ball, but the 5 hour games of the past were hard for me to stomach.

The umps, as BPender keeps telling me, are giving the pitchers the low strike at the knees and it is great. We will no longer ruin pitchers in college with the juiced up ball and fear to pitch inside and low. The players should be better prepared to go straight to the majors with these toned down bats.

College baseball is set to become a line-drive hitters game in the near future,  Coaches better adjust or they will follow LSU with "2 and Done."  Depending on baserunning and defense is a recipe for 50 games one year and a 500% season the next.  The LSU lack of hitting the last 3 years is difficult to explain, but leaving 20 runners on base in the last two games was more about pressure of the situation.

I am wearing my Mississippi State Baseball T-Shirt today in honor of BCompton, who pitched for the dogs in 98.

J.

NFL

Did the Cowboys handle anything right this offseason.

In my opinion. NO.

8-8 maybe a stretch unless the Defense is much better than I expect.

US OPEN`

Father's Day has become difficult for me to watch in recent years because of golf and the NBA finals.
Phil losing US Opens is gut wrenching.  The year he lost it on 18 and the Mavs were robbed in Miami made me quit watching TV for a month.

Phil has 4 majors, but I think he needs 6 to get his due among the greats of all time. We cannot forget that Tiger is just a phenom that is mentioned as greatest ever, but that Phil is an all time great.

I have never seen a supposedly great putter, like Lefty, miss as many birdie putts inside of ten feet.   It is the complete opposite of Jack and Tiger.  This makes it gut-wrenching for me in every major.

Still, I enjoy watching the wizardry and relate to the failures with Phil more than any golfer I have ever rooted for  in sports.

Rory, has to have Girl issues.  He loses concentration completely.   His ball striking is still below last year, but better than 95% of the PGA, but his putting is killing him.   Can the new ball effect the read of putts that much?  I would like to see the math on the subject.

Tiger, has been the best putter on tour by a wide margin for most of the year, but in the last month fallen off again.  I am confused by his lost ability to read putts better than anyone we have ever seen.

Justin Rose is a great golfer and I am glad he won a major.  I like his game and felt he deserved to win shooting 3 under the last 3 days when the course became harder.  His birdie after watching Phil Eagle 10 was eerily familiar to watching him make long putts in the recent Ryder Cup to beat Phil, who was playing great.
It is great to watch and almost funny, but you can tell that Rose likes Phil and wants to beat him out of respect.  It is like, Phil has made people better somehow. What a great competitor Rose has become?

Heat Spurs

A few weeks ago SI published and article about Lebron.  In the article an insider made a comment that they didn't realize that Lebron was the best player in the NBA when they got him and tried to make him play just a role on the team.
?  How did they not know?
Cavs in Finals, with who as teammates?
So much for the myth of ex-players recognizing talent.

He is incredible, not better defensively than MJ, but great.  (People forget MJ guarded the best players also and completely took them out of the game.)
I heard someone recently say that they never saw Malone guarding an All Star PG.  - Lebron Can!

He is not better than MJ in the lane on offense, but better than Kobe every thought about being.

I am still amazed at how fast he is down the court when takes off, the Heat coaching has contained his speed with his duties as a PG.  I cannot fathom what he would do if he had a Stockton-Malone type passer with him. Ca

The Heat are a team in desperate need of ADHD meds.
Between Wade clogging up the offense and Bosh being place out of position to help on interior defense, they are just hard to watch.

The Spurs on the other hand, seem to be the best at developing players and just play a great team game. When Wade and James are on the floor they double and triple Lebron, while knowing that Bosh stays outside so those two can clog up the paint and force issues.

If the Heat win, Wade will have to play defense with abandon or be sitting on the bench while the shooters spread the floor and let Lebron work the lane and kick it out.

I am curious if Lebron will opt out of his contract.  He cannot be happy with the griping reportedly in the locker room for the Heat.

Rory

It seems that our conversation this morning about Rory and his bad decision to change everything in his bag was apropos.

He WITHDREW with a Tooth Ache after being 7 over through 8 holes?  Really?
There is rumors that he told some reporters that he was having mental issues.

Now comes the bigger problem to me.  "Preaching by the media and other players."
They will tell us about physical ailments and other things that people have done in the past.
Some people will discuss Tiger and his micro fracture. ( I live it and it not nearly as bad as it sounds.)  They will forget Tigger walking off due to illness when he was about to lose his cuts made streak.
Reasons:
1. The natural thing to say is that he hates the NIKE equipment and it is exactly what you said this morning. I know that I find their stuff inferior, but I am not fitted with customized clubs.

2. We will see what it is eventually that is creating the mental issues, considering he is young with a female around that is always a question.

3. But with Rory, he has something else that tends to raise it's head at times.  The nationalism in Ireland and the violence that comes form that area is truly scary.  I found it curious that last year he put his new mansion up for sale and made the Olympic comments shortly after that.  Does he have an issue with fear that is bigger than failing at Golf?

I just want to see him get back to normal.

Greatness or Imposter?

A segment from the Bo Jackson ’30 for 30’ left an impression on me.  Jeremy Schaap was talking about Jackson and thought that he came along at the right time for a mythical, superior athlete because if he came a decade later, he would have fallen under suspicion of PED’s due to his ridiculous physique and size/speed.  He went on to say that sports fans have lost the ability to be in awe of great athletes due to that shadow of cheating.  I thought this was a great point because so much of why we love sports is the ability to be wowed by these superior athletes, but now we are so jaded that in the back of our minds we wonder, “is it real?”  That takes much from sports, especially for young fans.  So, instead of completely buying in to greatness, we wonder is Lebron cheating?  Is Usain Bolt?  Is Adrian Peterson?  Is Albert Pujols?  What about Michael Phelps?  Serena Williams?  All athletic freaks.  They can’t really be that good, can they?

Cam Cameron

Jonathan and I went over the past of Cam Cameron to get a feel for how his career production played out.  The short analysis is that he may be a better hire for the offense than Chavis was for the Defense.

His head coaching stints have been on bad teams, Indiana where he had Randle El who set an NCAA record for TD Passes and Rushes and Miami where he lasted only one season.

Miami-:  In Miami his QB was Cleo Lemon with a QB Efficiency WPA 0.57.  This alone sounds bad until you research the years prior. 2006-Harrington  (-1.27) 2005 Frerotte (-0.15)
Big Improvement with QB for 2007 (0.57)

San Diego:  Prior to Cameron 2001 Flutie (.01) Brees was a rookie and only played one game.
Cameron years: 2002 Brees (.72) 2003 (-1.01) 04 (4.27) 05 (0.06)
Then he picked up a stronger armed QB- 2006 Rivers (2.42)
After Cameron 2007 Rivers dropped to ( 0.66)

Baltimore: Flacco Years are impressive.
Prior to Cameron :2007 Boller(-0.22) McNair (-0.90) 2008 Flacco (-0.60)
Cameron Years:  All Flacco  2009 (1.48) 2010 (3.31) 2011 (3.01) 2012 ( 4.28)

Cameron makes QB and offenses better.
  • Baltimore was 30th in the league in Offensive 2008 in efficiency prior to his arrival.
  • Since they have been steady- 2009 (16th) 2010 (5th) 2011 (9th) 2012 (12th)
  • Miami went from 26th in Offense to 21st in his 1-15 year.
  • San Diego dropped from 2nd his last year to 8th the year he left.
  • Tidbit- He was QB coaching in Washington and Gus Frerotte went to the Pro Bowl.
Maybe, Miles has found a coach that he will be able to trust and let him run the offense and decide who plays.  If nothing else changes, I feel that Cameron will have the offense better prepared to block and allow the QB time to throw.

Grade of the hire:  A
This could get interesting, especially considering the level of talent that is coming out of Louisiana in 2013.
A good offensive  year and Miles may have the top ranked class in the nation next year.

The changes Saban new Offensive Coordinator made last  year.

Do You Know Bo?

This weekend I watched the '30 for 30' show on Bo Jackson.  All I can say is "thank God we got to see Bo Jackson and remember him".  It is the rarest of things in sports to see other high-quality athletes in awe of a peer.  They had people like George Brett and Howie Long talking about always wanting to watch when Bo was playing.  To hear a hall of famer like Long show so much respect was telling to me.

Bo was the perfect mythical story.  Career done after only 4 years.  All the "what-ifs".  In just 4 part-time years in the NFL he averaged 5.4 yards per carry and in 3 of the 4 years his long run of the year was at least 88 yards.  In his first baseball game in the majors he hit the longest ball in the history of Kaufman Stadium.  The flying catches, the tape-measure shots.

And all the while he was cool and humble and appreciated the ride.  Nice to remember one of the top 5 athletes that we've ever seen and glad to see that he's happy and content in retirement.  He was truly amazing.

S

Lydia Ko

In case you missed this, Lydia Ko is 15 years old and won her 3rd pro tournament as an amateur this weekend on the European Tour.  She won on LPGA for her last win and has 3 of her 12 pro events.

She plans on staying an Amatuer and going to Stanford.

She is Korean, but moved to New Zealand to take lessons and play.  She won her first pro tourney at age 14.
J

College BBall

Weird year for me on the rankings:
The Hurricanes are now ranked 3rd in the nation and it makes ZERO sense to me. Can the ACC just be bad?  The U is 19-3 and 10-0 in ACC and they beat Mstate.   But the losses are bad- Florida Gulf Coast Univ 18-8. Then Blown out at home by a NC contender in  Arizona team 20-3 and Indiana State 16-8 at home.

I watch Duke and they don't really look right to me.  Overrated.
Gonzaga.  Whatever

I like the Hoosiers.
J

By the way La Tech is 21-3.

Tiger Post

I had originally posted this under a comment, but it was too complex to pass up.  I am trying to not show any disrepect for his dominance.

If this article proves anything, it is that Tigger is the greatest combination of power and a short game in history.
In power he ranks with Nicklaus and Norman, but I can only think of someone like Tom Kite that has his efficiency on the short game of Tigger vs. his peers.  (Notice he only quit winning in years that he putted at the average level of the other players.) Woods has benefited from growing up with the 60degree wedge, so yes his short game is better than Jack's.

A little history, In 1981 Tom Kite, put the first 60degree wedge in his bag after (Dave Pelz gave him one.) His record in his first 9 years 2 wins. The difference when he became the best Short Game Player. At 33 years of age he won 17 times in the next 12 years.

The difference in Woods and Kite is simple, he has the athletic ability to hit with a powerful high ball flight. Because of this ability to hit the ball high , like Jack,  along with his short game and physical traits it makes his swing 4th in importance of his incredible success.   God Given Talent, Not Mental!  Jack dominated majors for this exact reason his entire career and clocked higher swing speeds than Woods.
Yes, his dedication played a major factor to his dominance, but it is more amazing to read stories about his short game and ability to power through his mistakes that other players could never hit.

His comment about about owning his swing makes me want to puke.

He is the epitome of not owning his swing. He never truly understood the reasoning or he would not have made the last two changes. The comparisons to the Media love "Hogan" still tickles me. Hogan had at best the 3rd best swing of his generation.   Facts are this, Hogan didn't win until big until Nelson left and he beat Snead with his brain, read up on the equipment changes he implemented and the run he made afterwards, while Snead played with what Trevino and Player say were the worst clubs in history. That Hogan did this on his own and started Hogan Golf is by far the most impressive, thing I have ever read regarding a golfer.

Players that we have seen that owned the swing: Trevino, Nicklaus, and Furyk. They had a swing and understood how to adjust to issues that Tiger never has done. Tiger has "Never and Never Will" own his swing.  Forget the numbers Haney screams.  Compare Harmon's last 4 years and  Haney's last 4.

Woods is the most gifted player of the modern era for sure, but his power is in my opinion is a few shades less than some of the past greats like Nicklaus, Norman and Snead.  The difference with Nicklaus and the other two is that he was the only one that putted as well as Tiger.  All three were much better ball strikers than Woods. As we know golf is a game of putting and power.

Tiger is a phenom and yes it is truly ridiculous that he changes his swing like he does.  Tigger will keep winning for the next 10 years regularly and it does not matter if he imitates Bubba Watson or Rory, it really doesn't matter when you have the gift.

LSU's Day

I will not say that I'm disappointed with this class, because it's certainly better looking than last year's, and we're coming off a tough close to the season.  What is concerning about it is that Miles did not land 1 player from TX.  That is a rare event as he has done well here in the past.  Meyer and Saban plucked a few and Sumlin cleaned house.  I hate to see us lose the TX base we had.  Overall I would say that I'm surprised that he keeps landing highly ranked offensive players given the recent performance.  He must be quite the salesman.

S

Meyer the Threat Part 2

I posted earlier, because I'm a pessimist and I worry about stuff like this, about Urban Meyer and Brian Kelly.  Kelly got routed, but he will be back.  Today's post is about signing day.  OSU and ND finished 2nd and 3rd based on Rivals rankings.  I worry about those guys landing top-flight athletes and knowing what to do with them:

Alabama - average recruit 3.84
Ohio St. - 3.83
ND - 3.92
LSU - 3.73

You get my drift.  Meyer signed 24, and only 10 were from Ohio.  A sample of his class:

4-star QB from TX
4-star TE from CA
5-star DB from GA
4-star DE from FL
4-star WR from FL
4-star DT from SC
4-star LB from GA
5-star LB from TX
4-star WR from MS
4-star RB from TX (Desoto)

He is going after big-time athletes from the south and CA.  So is Kelly.  I fear they are better coaches than Miles and Richt and possibly Muschamp.  If they have the athletes, they can win.

Tiger's Swing Mania

http://espn.go.com/golf/story/_/id/8865487/tiger-woods-reinvents-golf-swing-third-time-career-espn-magazine

The link above is an interesting story about Tiger Woods that should be right up your alley.  It's a subject that has always amazed me as I've told you before.  Tiger's obsession with his swing and how he has managed to overhaul it 3 times and still keep winning.

Stanley Frank Musial 1920 - 2013

The sports world lost a true icon yesterday when Stan Musial passed away.  One of the most revered giants of any sport, and someone who a bad word was never said.  As a baseball fan growing up in the 70's and learning about the greats of the game, Musial stood out even among the other all-timers.  I had a long post about Musial in November of 2011 so I won't go long into it.  Part of that post is copied below.  Suffice to say that an era is now truly gone.  I associate baseball with the iconic players of the era.  There was the "Cobb, Wagner, Johnson, Matthewson" era, the "Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Hornsby, Grove" era, then the "Williams, Musial, DiMiaggio, Feller" era.  Musial was the last of baseball's golden age, when the players were truly hero's and the exploits were seen through boxscores and radio only.  My wife was taken aback at the look on my face this morning when she told me Musial had passed.  I am truly sad today.

From my earlier post:

But when you look at what Musial accomplished, it is hardly rivaled by any player, and what he lacked in flash he made up for with sheer dominance. Start off with 7 batting titles in a 14-yr period. And while hitting at that level, he rained extra base hits on the league, leading it 8 times in doubles and 5 times in triples, and maintaining a slugging average near the .600 range. Never thought of as a pure slugger, he nonetheless led the league in OPS 7 times because he added an on-base average of around .425 to that .600 slugging average. And of course I always call out the 1948 season, in which Musial led the league in: hits, runs, doubles, triples, RBI, batting average, slugging average, on-base average, OPS, and total bases. He missed the triple crown by 1 home run, which was washed away in a rainout. Typical of his career, this season rivals any ever had by a ballplayer, but because he missed the triple crown, it’s largely forgotten.

If you remember I always liked to evaluate players on how much they dominated their league or era. Bill James liked to look at “Black Ink” and “Grey Ink”, meaning how many times did a player lead the league in a major category (Black) or finish in the top 10 (Grey). Musial is 5th all-time in black ink and 3rd all-time in grey ink. He totally dominated his era. Also, James came up with a hall-of-fame tester to evaluate a player’s worthiness for the hall. In his point system, Musial is 1st all-time.

All-Star Game in Allen

Eagle Stadium will host the Texas vs. Nation college all-star game on Feb. 2 at 1:30 pm.  Coach Westerberg was asked to be on the Texas staff.  This is a smaller version of the Senior Bowl and other pre-draft games.  Big deal here in Allen, TX!  Unfortunately I will be in Houston for a cheer competition!  Bummer.

NBA Efficiency Ratings

Getting close to the season's midpoint; time to review the player efficiency ratings.  I like to look at efficiency per 48 minutes to equalize older and younger players and coach's rotation patterns.  Here are the top 20 players using efficiency per 48 (must play 25 minutes per game):

Lebron - 38.6
Durant - 37.5 closer to Lebron than last year
Duncan - 37.5 ageless, just can't do 40 minutes anymore
C. Paul - 34.2 now clearly way ahead of any point guard
Anderson Varejao - 33.5 huh?
Brook Lopez - 32.2 underrated
Blake Griffin - 32.1
Al Jefferson - 31.7
Demarcus Cousins - 31.6
Kobe Bryant - 31.6 still playing hard
David Lee - 31.4
Kyle Lowery - 30.9
Carmelo - 30.7
Dwight Howard - 30.7
Russell Westbrook - 30.6
Tyson Chandler - 30.5 Cuban wouldn't pay!
J.J. Hickson - 30.3
Carlos Boozer - 29.9
Tony Parker - 29.8
Chris Bosh - 29.9

Also, James Harden checks in at #23 and Dwayne Wade at #27.

Joe DeCamillis

He is gone!

Now that is an improvement in Dallas.
Ridiculous penatlies, players in the wrong postitons, punters and kick-off teams giving up big plays.
It has been painful to watch him make faces and act like the players are always at fault.  I remember Coach Joe ripping him on air one night for not understanding blocking schemes on punts.

Thank you Chicago!

Peyton Manning in the Playoffs

I took it pretty hard that Manning blew a chance at another Super Bowl this weekend.  He had 3 turnovers, all of which led directly to Ravens scores.  He's on the hook for this one no doubt.  So, his playoff record sank to 9-11 and the radio shows screamed at his lack of playoff success and what it means to his legacy.  It is certainly a serious thing for a hall of famer to have a losing playoff record, but just how has he played?  Surprisingly his stats and his measuring stick Tom Brady's are nearly identical, outside of the wins and losses.  Here are the QB's most normally talked about as the best in the NFL at this point with playoff stats.

  W L Comp % Yds/Att TD INT Rating
P. Manning 9 11 63.2 7.5 32 21 88.4
Brady 17 6 62.9 6.8 41 20 89.1
Rodgers 5 3 66.1 7.9 18 5 103.6
Brees 5 4 66.8 7.6 22 4 103.9
Rothliesberger 10 4 60.6 7.7 20 17 83.7
E. Manning 8 3 61.5 7.1 17 8 89.3

I think it's safe to say that Brady has played for more well-rounded teams.  But, I was surprised to see that there is little difference in their overall performance, given the difference in record.  Eli has made his reputation on the fact that his playoff stats are quite a bit better than the regular season.  Peyton, Brady, and Big Ben cannot make that claim.

But, regardless, in the world we live in, the lack of playoff wins and the 1 Super Bowl win will continue to drag Peyton down.

Kiffin

The Question for Cowboys fans:

Kiffin vs. Ryan

I take Kiffin every day of the week unless someone knows that dementia has kicked in.

The logical excuse that the excuse makers are already screaming is that the Cowboys do not have the personnel to play a 4-3 with a Tampa 2.

I ask the simple question. Did they have the personnel to play the 3-4? They cannot seem to keep teams from scoring at will in the 4th quarter and give up a bunch of points on a team that has a high time of possession offense.

DLINE: Ware is without question capable of playing a DE in the 4-3. Spenser, don’t know and don’t care, he only showed up in contract years. Kick him to the curb. Ratliff has a lot of the same characteristics of Glover and Freeney, so I don’t see a problem there. Hatcher seems to be a better fit to me in a 4-3. If Dallas has a run stopper they hidden somewhere they will be vastly better.

LB- LEE seems to be a better fit with the 4-3 than the 3-4. Can you imagine him roaming all over the field? Carter is explosive and shows potential, he closes fast. Take your pick on the other LB, Cover or Run.

DB- This irritates me greatly. Supposedly the Cowboys have Man-to-Man backs, really? Besides Claiborne and Carr who was even close to a receivers? I do not understand why a great player cannot play a zone-man to man mixture like Kiffin ran in Tampa. One of the things that is a concern is the Safety, but isn’t that the same thing that Dallas has missed since Woodson left. I see no change in the secondary. Maybe a healthy Church will be the real deal with Kiffin. Kiffin will be letting him explode on people instead of trying to cover for Linebackers chasing people around in man to man.

My main concern is that the Spread is here to stay and neither Ryan nor Kiffin seem to have had an answer in their recent past.

Johnny Football

I had mentioned to some of you about the relationships and prosperity of his family in Tyler.  The money aspect is just so unusual for a superstar athlete.  I realize that some people like Andrew Luck have been raised with a silver spoon, but we haven't seen a silver spoon baby that is a borderline spoiled rich kid.

Well Johnny is creating a stir with his normal extravagant lifestyle.   The comment of buying his own floor seats to the Maverick game probably created a ton of raise eyebrows.   Then he is filmed at Casino's with his family that show him as a big time playboy.

I had to laugh at the comments form D Coordinator for Oklahoma.  This is a summary: "If he can stay out of jail, stay eligible and off twitter he may win a few Heisman's. "

Last year in College Station he was arrested fighting, failing to identify himself and for possessing two fake licenses.
Our version of Broadway Joe and Doug Flutie should be interesting during the next few years.

Belichick at 60

This is a rather painful post for me to write, but as I sat down today so watch yet another Patriot playoff game, I thought I'd look up Belichick's record.  Quite impressive if I do have to say so.  This is year 13 for B.B. in New England.  After a poor year 1, in this era of extreme parity, where teams routinely go from bad to good and good to bad so quickly, he has reeled off a 12-year stretch where he has averaged 12 wins per year.  That's a 75% win percentage for 12 years running.  He's been in playoffs 10 of 13 years with of course 5 Super Bowl appearances and 3 wins.

After last week's events I can't help but think about this in terms of Belichick's relationship with friend and coaching sounding board Nick Saban.  We talked about Saban's philosophy and ability to efficiently teach a system.  I can't help but admire how Belichick has also done things a certain way, operating in an environment that punishes success and strives for equalness, he simply follows his 'process' and keeps racking up wins with a rotating cast and the constant of Tom Brady.

Maybe the 2 of them will retire to the beach in the near future.
