Baseball Playoffs

Wow, did the Phillies put the hammer down or what? They went by the Braves like a rocket and don't look now but all 3 of their prime starters are pitching well. They are the best team in either league and if I was a Philly fan I would be extremely disappointed not to win it all with this team. Halladay and Oswalt get a real shot at glory with plenty of offense behind them. Yankees look really vulnerable after Sabathia. The Rangers did not win a game at either NY or Tampa all year.

I've seen several references to moving Hamilton to 1st base next year to protect him from all the injuries. I might do it in order to get 600 at bats from him, but it would truly be a shame because his speed, instincts, and cannon arm all scream center fielder. But, if it's the difference between getting 120 games out of him versus 150, it makes sense. He's reckless and fragile in the outfield, a very bad combination.

Florida-Alabama Week.

My initial thoughts:

Florida is underrated and every bit as physical as Bama.
I expect the Gators to have something special for Saban.
Forget the struggles against the weak sisters, Florida did this the year they won it with Leak and Tebow.
No one without will beat Florida this year except for Bama.

Bama
The boys is Tuscaloosa are special and mean.
Ingram is so smooth that many times I miss his moves that create two or three more yards. The QB is fine.
Defensively, I expect them to be unbeatable by the LSU game.
I actually think the Bama players underrated Arkansas scheme looking forward to the Gators.

First thought. Upset time.
Logically it makes no sense though.
Bama wins by 8 at home.

j

Packers

I could never figure out why they lost in Arizona last year. Maybe we are getting insight into the problem in Green Bay. They are a bit of a choking team.

Composure was the word Jennings used to describe the debacle last night.
I agree, they folded up and played tight when they were the favorite.

I love the coach, but like the Cowboys maybe they do not have the mentality to avoid miscues.

J.
Packers.
Monday's penalties Total
On offense 10
On defense 5
On special teams 3

Gonzalez game against Saints

I was amazed at Ryan's stats against the Saints when they were behind. 147 rating.

How about this. Gonazalez 8 catches for 110 and a td.
7 of his 8 catches were for first down. Ouch.

J.

Irony in Philly

Philly vs Washington.

McNabb is out and Vick is in.
McNabb lobbied Reid to sign Vick and it created the surplus to let him go.
He then taught Vick the offense and mentored him in the media.

Now McNabb is on a bad team and Vick is looking like a hero.

McNabb truly was a great QB in Philly, it is ashamed that this happened.

I will be pulling for the Skins, but don't see a win coming.
Philly still has some punishing tacklers and a blitz package that could lead to some issues for McNabb.

J

George Blanda

I was sad to see that he had passed away.
Hall of Famer-Blanda is an old Alabama Grad. 6 foot 2 and 215-225lbs.

I used to love to watch Blanda relieve Lamonica in the last 60's 70's.
He would come in and lead comebacks time after time.

I never disliked the Raiders and respected what they did. I could never pull for them over a NFC team, but I always pulled for them over the Dolphins and Steelers.

He looked like he was approaching 60 when he was still playing.

Blanda holds the following professional football records:

Passing TD's in a game: 7 (Tied with 4 others) November 19, 1961 vs. New York Titans[4]
Most seasons played: 26 (1949–58, 1960–75)
Most seasons scoring a point: 26
One of two players to play in 4 different decades: (40s, 50s, 60s, 70s)
Most PATs made (943) and attempted (959)
Most interceptions thrown, single season: 42 (1962)
Held record of most pass attempts in a single game: 68 (37 completions, vs. New York Titans on 11/1/1961) until 1994 when Drew Bledsoe had 70
Oldest person to play in an NFL game:48 years,109 days
First player ever to score over 2,000 points
Oldest quarterback to start a title game
Most total points accounted for (including TD passes) in a career: 3,418 (not an official stat)

Dallas Win

I am sorry, but I am not sold on the Cowboys yet.

This is a repeat of last year and a team that makes so many mental errors that I nearly go crazy.

Can Columbo be that good, Romo was still scampering, but he had time and that monster Williams was incognito.

Marion Barber..Why? I still do not understand.
17 carries 55 yards...3.2 yds per carry.
Last year...4.4..2008 3.7
Jones.- 6.2 last 3 years. He has 22 carries this year 4.0. and 4 receptions. 6 yards a carry yesterday.

Roy Williams- Did something change or did Red Jesus finally find a way for him to get into position to catch on a run?

Wade, Wade.. How can they have so many penalties. Discipline falls on Wade.

J

Saints Fans Have Gone Ballistic

Garrett Hartley may want to go home to Keller sooner than expected.

He is 4 for 7 on the year and the fanatics are ready to run him out of town.
Maybe they are correct, but this guy put them in the Super Bowl.

Bueller at Dallas is 4/6, but cost the Cowboys 2 games or at least a good chance to win two games. Hartley made 84% last year.

I posted this for RJR, because he is a bit upset with the lack of loyality from the Saints trackers.

They should be more concerned with Matt Ryan completing 15/18 when the Saints had a lead.
Throw in the fact that the Falcons had 200 yard rushing and 45 minutes time of possession and it makes you wonder what defenses have changed to slow down the high powered Payton offense and its ability to control the ball.

j
Per Jonathan calling me on this.
I think any kicker under 75percent needs to be gone.

Comment from ESPN writer from Big East.

I guess Les Miles will dispute this comment, but he figured out LSU in one night.

Despite LSU's offensive ineptitude and spate of penalties, West Virginia never get closer than three points in the second half. And with two missed field goals, the 20-14 loss hurts even more.

There was no shame in the performance in one of the most notoriously difficult environments in sports. But West Virginia had an opportunity for a signature win here and came up short.

J

Jimmy Johnson Comments on Boys.

1. Loves Romo-needs a little bit of heat from head coach.
2. Pick a running back and become a power team.
3. Blames the head coach for Penalties and false starts...No accountability.

My take on his comments.
1. Romo- He is better than half of the SB winning QB's. Schemes put a numbers not just talent.
2. RB- Well since I wanted Barber gone the same year as the Julius Jones left, you know I agree. If Felix Jones no longer has the ability to make people miss. Play Choice, He runs hard and is elusive.
3. Amen, after watching LSU last night and reading about Bama's lack of penalities on the Oline. Wade needs to go.

J

Saturday Games

1. WV-LSU: Loved the crowd and noise last night.
Crowton and Miles are pitiful. I would blame Crowton more if LSU was not so undisciplined. Miles gets everything- Penalties, dropped passes.
And this....
Peterson again is out of the game in the 2nd half of dehydration. This is a conditioning staff issue, the kids brags about drinking a case of water in a week???? Why not in a day, everyday.

After the game, during his press conference, Miles said LSU could run on anyone.
He must drink, a lot. 230yds offense. 150 yards rushing against a WV that could move the ball at all... 4.2 per carry.

LSU actually outgained WVU last night..they held them to 177. wow.

2. Texas- Mack Brown's confusion over why he lost to Alabama is going to kill what he has built. He better open that offense back up again. Nebraska is still aggressive and will beat a plodding Tx team.

3. Bama- I think we can all agree Ingram is better than we expected.
Mallett still reminds me of a spoiled kid...I cant explain it, I just feel it.

4. Sooner's- When did Stoops lose his ability to stop teams?

5. Who is this guy at Florida.

Rivals Radio

Fridays are the best with Bill King.
Phil Steele and Chris Landry.

Today's comments.
Steele- USC is the 5th best team in the Pac 10
TCU is better than Boise State and they were last year also. They would be favorite 10 out of 10 games against them.

Landry- Miami could finish 10-1
Luck at Stanford is the best QB since Manning.

Frog Stuff

As TCU prepares for the Ponies this weekend, some Frog numbers for you to digest. Since the demise of the SWC after the '95 season, the Frogs are 118-54 and 108-37 since Dennis Franchione took over in 1998. This includes a 7-4 bowl record since '98, 7 appearances in the final AP poll, and 5 conference championships. They have 13 players on NFL rosters and have had 5 1st-team AP All-Americans since 2000. When they appeared in the final AP poll in 2000, it was the first time since 1959. Suffice to say that Franchione was a pretty good hire since it also brought Patterson on board.

S

District Time

Allen kicks off district with a bang this week vs. Plano at home. As we settle into the district race note that the Eagles have won 31 straight district games going back to the middle of the 05/06 season (vs. Plano). An amazing accomplishment given the competition they face in Collin and/or Denton county each year. Coach Westerberg is 70-12 since taking over for Joe Martin in 2004, including 38-2 in district play. Overall Allen has made the playoffs for 11 straight seasons. This has led to 3 runs to the state semi-finals since '03, with the championship in '08. The major blemish is 5 consecutive losses to Southlake since '03, all 5 of which ended Allen's season. This will be the first year since 2006 that Allen faces district play without QB Matt Brown. Friday we'll find out if new QB Alec Morris is up to the task.

Jason Garrett one more time.

Here is Red Jesus explaining why he does things.

===
"We're always trying to get the running game going, we're always trying to have efficiency and success in the passing game,'' Garrett said. "We're not doing this to be democratic. We're doing this because we feel this is the right way to run an offense with the people we have.

"I think we've had success with this approach in the past. We certainly lean on a number of our marquee players and then there are roles for other guys as well. It's a good way to run an offense, to attack defenses different ways. You have to be successful executing in the different ways you're doing it, and we'll continue to work at that and get better at that.'
=
Who told him he was successful with scoring in the past?
They were 13th in touchdowns last year. tied for 10th with 3 teams in 2008.
I think it is safe to assume that Dallas has more talent on offense than some of the teams ahead of them..

Batting Average

If you want a good read of numbers. Check out the Tampa Devil Rays batting average vs run production. It is amazing how productive they are.
I love the way they play baseball.

It is irritating as heck for the others teams, but they have a fine manager.

They rank 25th out of 30 major league teams in batting average. 249 avg.
28th in hits, ridiculous.

But the Rays rank 2nd:
In Runs scored after tonight. Only the Yankees scored more.
2nd in RBI's Yankees again.

Someone explain to me how this happens. They are just a pesky, pesky team.

Amazing, the antithetical or polar opposite of the Dallas Cowboys.

J.

Cowboys Popularity.

Everyone is talking about the Nielson ratings on the Cowboys. The national media has admitted to down playing the surprising gap between Dallas and the other teams.
Dallas was 23% more popular than the 2nd place team the Steelers.
The truly amazing number is on the national scale the gap was much wider.
Dallas had 117million viewers last year.

4 categories were used:
1. National viewers. 1. by a large amount. Steelers 2.
2. Internet viewing.1. by a large amount. Steelers 2.
3. Internet buzz. 2.... Giants 1.
4. Local TV- 8th....Pitts and Saints 1 and 2.

The Steelers swapped place with the Giants.

The scary truth.
Dallas truly is more popular than half of the NFL combined.
If you want to remove the local part of the equation with the 7 million in population in DFW. Dallas goes much higher and is likely more popular than the top teams combined.

Hate them if you want, but they are by far the most popular sports team in America.

Be prepared to keep watching them on National TV even with a 8-8 record.

The Wallstreet Journal discussed how this happened.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703453804575479964140668930.html

Notice that this rating did not even discuss the sports memrobilia sales which puts the Cowboys on a level that is incomprehensible. They have been in the top 3, and led nearly every year since the 70's. No other team stays in the top 10.

J.

Dying in Big D.

After sulking for 3 days, I will comment a bit on the quotes.

1. Jerry as the GM and Owner- If we ever had a reason to get rid of Jerry, it is the kicker situation the last two years. How many games did they lose last year because of a kicker. This year he goes with someone that couldn't win a job in college. I will not even get into the Flozell issue. They have a team with a chance to be really good, knowing well that OLine is a weakness and he cuts him because of money. Why?

2. Wade- He blamed the wind for 4 missed kicks in practice today. Are you kidding me. I was starting to come over to Wade's corner because of his defense keeping them in games.

Now, I am worried about these seem routes, people are getting small guys on there inside backers. I will be curious to see how he changes to respond.

How could he let Felix Jones gain that much weight, how many times do we have to see these running backs gain weight and lose quickness.

3. Garrett- also know as Red Jesus for leading them to a 13 win season his first year with TO and Romo. What the mass media did not reports was that all of the points were during the first 9 games that year and since they have had problems on a short field.

Today he blamed it on a lack of balance. Wow. It seems a bit of a concern to me that he may run 30 times at 2 yards a carry against the Texans.

I prefer Dan Reeves opinion that the blocking schemes seem to be a little out of wack. During his week at Valley Ranch that is all he worked on. During the Vikes playoff game we watched they had players coming free after most plays from the second quarter on. About a week some players were being interviewed on GAC and Romo came clean. He said "Don't blame the lineman, they picked up there man."

S, you have complained about his inability to adjust for years, well you are correct.
Ed Reed summed it up pretty well a couple of years ago when he said publicly that the Dallas offense was really simple to game plan against.

2 offensive TD's in Two Games. Are you kidding me.
If you want to feel sick go track how many games in the last two years that the Dallas offense has scored more than 2 tds.

4. How can Garrett and Houck be the highest paid position coaches in the NFL. Is Houck still using the 90's blocking schemes.

5. If you want a few positive, they are playing similar to the way they played last year.
The offense went 8 quarters last year with 2 tds.

Colts

If you enjoy football, there are few things prettier than watching Manning and the Colts carve somebody up like they just did in the first half against the Giants. Of all the things I'll remember about sports when I get old, watching Manning operate will be a highlight.

S

Garrett/Phillips Dynamic

I thought back this week about the hiring of Garrett before the hiring of Phillips. Wade isn't really a head coach and he came into a situation where his boss had hand picked one of his subordinates. I wonder what Wade would do with this offense if he really felt he controled it. I don't think he does. I truly believe he needs to be fired. He's just a coordinator, not a head coach. He does not set the tone and motivate the players.

S

Can you tell if this Quote is Les Miles or Jason Garrett

"But the approach and the effort has been good by our players. We just have to clean things up and execute better."

It is the Princeton graduate, he must be listening to the Miles interview forum.

Pathetic.

CB talking about Cowboys

This is from the Startelegram
-

Cornerback Terence Newman hinted after the game that the Cowboys did not practice well.

"Some things had kind of gotten let go in practice," he said. "Things that are not on the coaches. They don't really know some of the things that are going on, but as players we've got to crack down and make sure some of the stuff that was going on doesn't go on."

Newman said more intensity is needed.

"We've got to make it a game situation in practice," he said. "That's just what it is. We go hard in practice, but maybe our intensity needs to go up a little bit."

Romo

We should prepare for Romo bashing this week and it is a little bit frustrating.

It is obvious that he is not playing his best, but they fact that he is running for his life and continues to be forced to throw balls on timing into zones with multiple defenders waiting on his receivers falls squarely on Red Jesus. 2 td's in 8 quarters is absurd. 20 rushing attempts for 36 yards with no ability to control the line on passes falls squarely on schemes, Houck and Garrett.

Romo's comments-after the game.

"I haven't experienced it yet, but you sit there and wonder if you're ever going to win a football game when you get to this point," quarterback Tony Romo said. "It's not what you expect going into the season. It's frustrating. We have to do things better and we have to figure it out in a hurry now."
j

Dallas

Where do we start. How about ESPN blog.
Remember my complaints. Oline coach, O coordinator, felix gaining weight, no fg kicker again.
here you go.
-
http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast/post/_/id/18581/rapid-reaction-bears-27-cowboys-20
-
Goat: Too many to really single anyone out. It didn't help that kicker David Buehler missed a 44-yard field goal, but I still think the Bears would've responded with a touchdown drive if he'd nailed it. Let's single out Jenkins for letting Knox get behind him in the first half and Terence Newman for missing a tackle that allowed the Bears to set up the game-sealing touchdown pass.

What I didn't like: Pretty much everything. Why was Garrett running the ball on second-and-10 all the time? Is he not allowed to run on first down? In the first half, Marion Barber had some momentum in the running game, so he was removed from that series in favor of Felix Jones. I'm not sure what's wrong with Jones. Is the weight catching up to him? Didn't look fast at all and he looked tentative at the line of scrimmage. This is not a good football team.

j

LSU Same old-Same Old

LSU wins 29-7, so I watched the game on the DVR and tried to slow down the offensive plays to get an idea of the improvement. Well, I see NO improvement, except maybe less forced off-guard run plays.

As bad as the Mississippi State offense is, they out gained LSU and ran more plays. This fact along with the 5 interceptions really shows the problems. LSU will run half the plays of Alabama and have trouble getting the Bama off the field. Auburn will put up 450 yards to LSU 240. Arkansas may have enough time of possession to put up 600 yards.

Miles-Irritating moment of the night.
At halftime the ESPN reported asked him what changed to get two interceptions.
His-Dumb AS comment- "They Threw it."

I wish I would have been in her earpiece to remind him that North Carolina threw it for over 400 yards in a half. 6 quarters ago.

j
going to be a real long year.

LSU Comments

I only saw the first half, but watching them and the Cowboys seem related. The offensive lines are average at best and neither team can establish a consistent running attack to build off of. LSU certainly played a better all-around game but the competition is going to get much tougher.

The Mich St. call is why college football is the best. A fake field goal in o/t? Greatness.

TCU just completely battered and dominated Baylor. This could actually be Patterson's best team. Dalton 21/23, wow.

OK has defensive issues and TX has offensive issues. Nebraska might be dangerous.

Ole Miss - SEC thoughts.

How do you lose to Vandy at Home. The Grove must be going NUTTS, literally.

The hoodlum QB seems to think he is a one man band. He is too inaccurate and seems to pull the ball out of the RB's hands to late on the option plays. It looks like the offense that Arkansas had the year before his embarrassing departure.

Arkansas almost blew the game today against Ga. They fell asleep half way thru the 3rd quarter. I wanted to mention the QB for Ga arm strength on the last play Hail Mary.
He threw it 67 yards in the air and it was 9 feet up in the year at 67 yards. Impressive.
GA looks terrible, 0-2 in the SEC.

Mullens departure at Fla is really something else. Meyer seems to have lost his imagination with the gators. 0 points in 1st against TN. Is it possible that Tebow was better than we thought and the scheme is just that outdated? I am in shock. His offenses at Bowling Green and Utah were imaginative and fun, the Gators are hard to watch.

Now, I get to go watch La Tech vs Navy. I am afraid that Tech may not score with the QB ferris wheel in Ruston. Navy handled them pretty easily last year, maybe the 100 plus heat on the field will hurt them. I doubt it with Navy controlling the ball with the option.

I will listen to LSU and watch it later. It maybe a bloodbath with 22 punts.

Abilene

Well, Abilene was able to redeem themselves against Plant 27-17. Strangely Abilene opened with 3 out of state competitors, Franklinton, LA, then Cocoa, FL, now Plant (Tampa). Not sure why their coach pursued that kind of schedule, but it certainly brings the spotlight. They should be primed for district now I guess.

S

TCU / Baylor

The revival of the TCU/Baylor rivalry this weekend really makes me think about a couple of things. First, I miss the SWC and the Big 8. Second, many people around here expect Baylor to give them a good game which says a lot about how TCU and Boise really don't deserve to be top 5-rated programs. Most of their weeks are so easy compared to the big boys; to think that Baylor presents a major challenge is a real indictment. As much as I love the Frogs, there's just no doubt they would get beat up and lose at least 4 games in one of the majors. That said, my opinion continues to be that the mid-majors should be eligible for a BCS bowl berth, but not a championship game berth.

S

2009 Draft

Rick Gosselin wrote about this during the week. Some amazing numbers from the 2009 draft which he already says is by the far the worst ever. A stunning 33% of those drafted are already off of the roster of the team that drafted them. 12 of the top 100 have been waived or released. The Eagles have dropped 5 of their 8 choices and the Steelers 5 of their 9.

Schlerith is on Cowherd
=

Dallas O line is a major problem and not that good with the starters.

Romo is underrated because he has to avoid more sacks than anyone else. He
said he has to run for his life every game.

j

I will talk about the recent poll of popularity later. The Cowboys don't deserve me praising them right now.

Matt Mosely is down on the Cowboys.

FALLING
1. Alex Barron, Dallas Cowboys right tackle: OK, this is starting to feel like piling on, but then, how do you leave this man off the list? If he simply gets one punch on Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo, there's a chance he could've knocked him off stride. Instead, he was beaten off the snap and had to put his arm around the linebacker's neck. In normal circumstances, you'd rather see an offensive tackle take a holding penalty if it means protecting your quarterback from a clean shot. But on the final play of a game, it's probably best to let Orakpo race on by and see if Romo can still make a play.

2. Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator: He took full responsibility for that clueless call at the end of the first half while talking to reporters Wednesday at Valley Ranch. On Monday, coach Wade Phillips had attempted to take the blame. But Jerry Jones' decision to pretty much let these men operate independently is going to cause problems from time to time, and you saw that in dramatic form Sunday night. Garrett also failed to stick with a running game that appeared to have some potential in Sunday's game. Just a really bad night for Garrett all the way around.

j

Saints making history.

In just the second week of the season, the New Orleans Saints have a chance to make franchise history. They have never started 2-0 in consecutive seasons, but they can do that with a victory against San Francisco.

The Saints started 13-0 last year. But the Saints have started 2-0 only six times in franchise history.

One other positive statistic for the Saints: They’ve won their last five meetings with San Francisco, and each of those have come since the Saints left the NFC West in 2002. And a final New Orleans note from ESPN Stats & Information: Drew Brees completed 75 percent of his passes in the season opener. That’s the 15th time he’s completed that high of a percentage of his passes since joining the Saints in 2006. In that same time frame, San Francisco quarterbacks have had only five games where they’ve completed 75 percent of their passes.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcsouth/index/_/count/16

j

Saints are popular in New Orleans.

With a 60.0 rating in the New Orleans area, the game between the Saints and Vikings was the most watched season opener in New Orleans and the largest share for any market during the week. In somewhat of a surprise, that game also topped the ratings in the Tampa Bay market with a 15.6 rating. The Buccaneers’ victory against Cleveland was blacked out in the Tampa Bay market.

LSU-MState Articles

SEC Blog Info on LSU MSU.

LSU 21, Mississippi State 17:

*LSU needed a goal-line stand a year ago to escape in Starkville, and the Tigers have a way of keeping things interesting in the second half. To their credit, they did put away Vanderbilt last week on the road, but the Bulldogs will put up a considerable fight to keep from losing two in a row this early in the season. In the end, they won’t be able to handle LSU’s defensive front, coming up just short … again.

**Going by feel: For the time being, it sounds like Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen will play it by ear (or feel) with his quarterbacks. The Bulldogs will continue with their rotation of junior Chris Relf and redshirt freshman Tyler Russell this Saturday at LSU. Neither was real effective in throwing the ball in the loss to Auburn. Relf started the game, and he was also the one Mullen decided to go with on the final few possessions when the Bulldogs had a chance to either tie the game or take the lead. Relf and Russell combined to complete just 45.7 percent of their passes against Auburn. Russell has the bigger upside as a passer, but never found a rhythm in the last game. If the Bulldogs fall behind again in this game, it will be interesting to see which quarterback Mullen goes with in the second half.

*** LSU’s sack party: LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis felt good about his defensive line coming into this season, even though the Tigers were going to have several new faces up front. He’s not caught up in sack numbers, but he did want to get more pressure on the quarterback after LSU finished with just 21 sacks a year ago. So far, so good. The Tigers have 10 sacks in their first two games, which leads the country. The enforcer in the middle of that defensive line has been senior tackle Drake Nevis, who already has 3.5 sacks and is playing the best football of his career. Not many people have blocked him to this point. But the Tigers have also spread the wealth. Seven different players have at least half a sack heading into Saturday’s home opener against Mississippi State.

j

Alabama's O Line- Amazing

After 42 straight quarters, an Alabama offensive lineman has finally been penalized for holding. It happened in the Penn State game last week, and the guilty party was sophomore guard Chance Warmack. Alabama offensive line coach Joe Pendry let him have it pretty good.

This is just amazing to me.

Maybe the Cowboys should fire the highest paid line coach in the NFL and pay Joe Pendry instead.

J

Miles is talking again.

SEC Blog. Miles is talking about replacing Jefferson with Lee.

from article.--Of course, the problem there is that Lee’s the same guy who threw 16 interceptions, seven of them returned for touchdowns, two seasons ago.

Going to be a long year if Crowton doesn't teach JJ something special.

Texas- Mack Brown's offense

I am totally confused by Mack Brown changing his offensive philosophy this year.

He has handcuffed Gilbert with these changes. He cannot really believe that running would have changed the outcome vs Bama.

If they don't adjust, I am afraid Stoops will play for a national championship.

j

Jerry is being a bit defensive.

.“Wade can call any play he wants to call out there,” Jones said. “But he certainly does rely, depend and delegate to Jason regarding the offensive playcalling, but let’s make that real clear, Wade can call anything he wants to out there, or stop any call.”Jones

Jerry doesn't like being questioned on his hiring of Garrett before Wade.

Ed Werder's article started with this line.
"The Dallas Cowboys are perpetually overrated and incompetently coached."

Here is what my favorite scout had to say about the subject.

I blamed Jerry for hiring a head coach that can't make a decision, or is not allowed to make a decision.

World Championships

Be sure to read Bill Simmons' latest love fest for Kevin Durant on ESPN. Interesting that Coach K looked at this roster and decided to just put some athletes around Durant and turn him loose. From Simmons:

Kevin Durant, last three USA games: 100 points, 35-for-59 shooting (59 percent), 15 3-pointers.
Everyone else on Team USA, last three games: 159 points, 57-for-146 shooting (39 percent), 14 3-pointers.
And he doesn't turn 22 until later this month.
And I never thought we'd get here this soon.

1st Impressions

This just in, Chris Johnson and Michael Vick are fast. The Colts defense got shockingly pushed around and utterly dominated. Mark Sanchez sucks. Jake Delhomme sucks. Pete Carroll could win that sucky division he's in. Giants looked good, the NFC East will be brutally tough. Does Buffalo still play in the NFL? I'm kind of on the Green Bay bandwagon.

Alabama didn't look as good as the score; they gave up a lot of yards and were helped by Penn St. turnovers and a true freshman QB. I think Bob Stoops chewed some butt last week and it showed. Gamecocks will be a handful. Where was Rich Rod hiding Denard Robinson? The Big 10 isn't ready for that dude. I think Va Tech was just slightly overrated.

S

Nadal

Just watched Nadal finish the "career grand slam" at 24. Despite my early view on him, I now can do nothing but like and admire him as a fantastic athlete and a classy, humble guy. He's popular in the locker room and he is the rare tennis player that can adjust to different surfaces and play at the highest level. He's also a highlight reel who never concedes a point. A great guy to be the new face of men's tennis.

S

Breaking Ground

The bulldozers are out in force, ground has been broken on the new Allen University, uh sorry Allen High football stadium. $60 million of our citizen tax dollars at work. And yes I did say that Westerberg better win some more titles, because 1 title is not enough when you're playing in possibly the nation's best on-campus high school football stadium. He's been given every tool to succeed. I give him a lot of credit for this run of 1 or zero loss regular seasons, but expectations are getting higher and higher.

S

Foster & the Evolution of the NFL

Yesterday's breakout game by Arian Foster, a non-drafted RB who spent last year on the Texan's practice squad, is an example of the continuing trend in the NFL toward the supremacy of the Coach and the QB. The NFL is now so popular and so many great young athletes play football, that the teams are becoming a vast collection of freak athletes all over the field. Most teams can match athlete for athlete at most positions and they are so incredibly fast and strong, that they mostly cancel each other out. The Coach now reigns supreme; witness your posts about Payton. The chase is now all about finding a near-genius coach along with the most rare commodity, a near-genius, video game brain decision maker with the legs and arm of a world class athlete to play QB. There are only a handful now in the NFL who are truly proficient at running these NASA-like offenses. And because the colleges now are still chasing the Vince Young model, there are fewer well-trained QB's coming out. Finding a QB is going to get harder and harder and the good ones will become even more expensive.

S

Draft Whiffs & the Consequences

The Cowboys have not drafted a significant contributor on the O-line since Andre Gurode and have missed on several. We now see the consequences of poor decisions in the draft room, when a team with Super Bowl aspirations is being undermined by one unit. Why would a bad team like the Rams trade their starting left tackle for a spare linebacker? Last night we found out as Barron played one of the singular worst games by a lineman you will ever witness. This is a very average unit with age and injury issues and I can't see it getting fixed in the short term. This offense is in trouble. I did hear one commentator on the radio this week saying Romo was underrated because he continually has to make plays behind a poor line.

S

Bill Byrne on the SEC

Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne was a guest on the "Aggie Hour" this week at a local restaurant. During his stint, he answered some questions in regards to the potential move the Aggies could have made to the SEC this summer.
On why the team decided to stay put: "I was concerned with changing conferences that we may not be ready for the level of competition if we decided to leave. I was very concerned about trying to take things slowly, and not rush."
He continued on, citing budgetary reasons: "If we looked at where we stacked up financially in the Pac 10 conference, we were about third. If we looked at where we stacked up in the Southeastern Conference, we were eighth out of 12. We didn't rank very well."
He also looked back at when A&M as an athletic department was not ready for the switch from the SWC to the Big 12: "My big concern was that when Texas A&M made the move from the Southwest Conference to the Big 12 conference [in 1996], they were not ready for the level of competition that was out there."
"[A&M] had not made the investment in facilities, staff or salaries - all the things you need to build a great program. And you saw the results of that. We had a good football team in 1998, then we had problems.
"We had terrible basketball [teams]. ... We had significant issues in track and field. We had problems with most of our sports because we were not ready for the level of competition

LSU-Mississippi State

I do not see how LSU will beat Mississippi State this weekend with their current philosphy.
Establishing the run with an OLine that couldnt handle Vandy for 3 quarters.

Mullen will have a game plan attacking the weakness that North Carolina found with the short passes. LSU is lucky those QB's cannot throw very accurately.

LSU will lose if they try to pound the ball on the Dogs, that D Line is bigger than Vanderbilt and in better shape than LSU's.

As a LSU fan I can only hope that skilled athletes they have will continue to break the games open with big plays. Tolliver is due this weekend.

J.

Cowboys and Tigers.

I will breakdown my thoughts later in the week.

Let's start here.

LSU-10-3 in the 4th quarter against a bad Vandy team is just horrible.
The Offensive line took 4 quarters to finally wear down a little Vandy team.
Translation- Miles is going to be blaming everyone on the team before week 7.
Crowton needs to go if he cannot devise a scheme to move the ball.

Dallas- The offense is still unable to pick up blitzes. Who to blame, well let's start with Red Jesus. He was shown to be out smarted in Minnesota last year and it is continuing.
How can they not score? I have a theory started by an Ed Reed comment two years ago.
The offense is predictable. The routes they run are timing and seem to be slow developing and in the same areas each time.

S, you summed it up best...Pathetic.

SEC Blog on next year - Non conference.

Playing in the Dallas area is a coup for the Tigers, who recruit extensively in the state of Texas. What's more, LSU has a huge alumni base in Dallas.

The SEC now has a pretty impressive lineup of nonconference opponents set for next season.

Among them: Alabama plays at Penn State. Auburn plays at Clemson. Boise State plays at Ole Miss, and Arkansas faces Texas A&M in Cowboys Stadium. In addition, Georgia plays Georgia Tech every year, while Florida faces Florida State annually and South Carolina plays Clemson annually.

j

Auburn-Mississippi State

I am torn on this game. Mullen appears to be the real deal as a head coach.
Auburn has freakish athletes at QB and RB.. Truly freaks. That QB is a monster and the RB's are typical Auburn.
A 3 point spread for Auburn.

31-29 is my score with the Cowbells ringing in Starkvegas.

I hope this is a white out game.

j

Before we jump on Peterson Freight Train.

Peterson has done a great job at Boise State, but before we jump on the train for him replacing someone like Les Miles.

Here are the previous coaches records after they left Boise State.

Houston Nutt: 93-56 - Most Successful.
Dirk Koetter: 40-34 - Az St. Current OC at Jacksonville St that beat Nutt and Ole Miss this weekend. Credit him with building the program at Boise St.
Dan Haskins: 17-33 - That offense is not so special when big athletes are prepared for it.

I like Peterson, but I worry about small conference teams becoming a CEO at the big schools.

j

How important is a great Coach. Bree's Story.

The doubting began when then-Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer benched Brees in 2003 in favor of then-42-year-old Doug Flutie. The hesitation from the front office couldn't have been more obvious when the Chargers drafted Eli Manning and traded for Philip Rivers. Two slaps in the face in about an hour's time during the 2004 draft.
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/13826581/brees-now-sees-painful-san-diego-exit-as-biggest-blessing
---
Some people get upset when we question the level of Bree's physical abilities.

In the SD, Vikings or Cowboys offense, he is a weaker armed and slower version of Doug Flutie.
Put him with Sean Payton and his is a statistical anomaly with hall of fame potential.
God Bless the great coaches that adjust to the players they have in order to win.

I had to live up to my prediction from last Novemeber of Saint Sean winning 2 of the next 3 Super Bowls. I hope I am wrong about the Saints, Payton's brilliance is wasted on Tom Benson.

Another year of these pseudo football fans climbing on that Saints band wagon is too much for me to tolerate. I realize this is the same thing that happened with the Dolphins, Steelers, 49ers and Bears, but I didn't have to listen to people up here say "our team." It's especially sickening considering the Saints and their owner have ignored North La for 50 years. Our tax money pays for this crap and he makes more money than every business in La.

Ryder Cup.

I have no problem on Pavin's picks.
Anthony Kim would have been my substitute for Woods if you wanted to avoid the controversy.
Without the injury he rolls in.
Cink I question- Fowler I like, the kid is a blast furnace.
The biggest snub: Nick Watney Higher world ranking (31st) than: Cink, FowlerMore FedEx Cup points than: Woods, Cink

Article on Cowboys RB's

Cowboys want to get Felix Jones the ball as much as possible, but look for him to share the bulk of the carries with Marion Barber.

Running back rotation: Who cares who starts? It’s about how the carries are split. It appears that Marion Barber and Jones will share the bulk of the workload, perhaps evenly, with Tashard Choice picking up the scraps again. They want to get Jones the ball as much as possible without wearing him down. The Cowboys can’t be hesitant to make a change if warranted. Choice has proved that he can be an effective NFL back. If Barber gets banged up again or isn’t effective, he should swap roles with Choice and become the third-down back.

Jonathan's NFL Prediction - Yes his a Homer.

Anyone that wants to make a prediction on the record let me know.
Mine is coming Thursday.
--
As the season is upon us, I will make my predictions for each division and the playoffs. I was torn on the NFC West. I wanted to go with AZ but the talent is better in the bay.

I sound like a homer , but who in the NFC is that much better- Payton adds 2-3 wins to the team. I love the talent on the Cow pokes but the Oline and the offensive coaching scare me (also poor track record for a team to have a home game in the Super Bowl) GB, I like, but again the O Line. McCarthy's system requires the QB to hold the ball a little while (more 5 step drops, etc) and Rogers has a propensity to hold it as well.

AFC, I have no feel for, so I stretched on Mia and Balt- Miami reminds me of the Boys a few years ago. They have talent at all positions and just need the QB to be good. Balt- The secondary concerns me.

High School Superstar.

Here is the player from South Panola that is running rampant.

Artilcle from Clarion Ledger:
Reinvented Griffin bursts into prep limelight as South Panola senior RB

Qyen Griffin wasn't picked for The Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen nor can he be found anywhere on Rivals' or Scout's Internet lists of Mississippi's top 30 prospects.

But anyone searching for the state's most impressive high school performer through three weeks need look no further than South Panola's freight train of a running back.
Griffin, a 5-foot-10, 225-pound senior, has rushed for 749 yards and scored 11 touchdowns as the Tigers - the nation's No. 1 high school team per Rivals - manhandled Petal, Colquitt County (Ga.) and Memphis University School.
"Qyen's got great strength and balance," SP coach Lance Pogue said. "He can give that little juke where he won't take the first shot. Then he knows when to stick it in there, drop his shoulder and be physical. He's been everything I thought he could be."
So how did Griffin - who's averaging 13 yards per carry and has four TDs of 70 yards or more this fall - fly under the preseason radar of college coaches and the media who track the prospects they're recruiting?
Two reasons: A position change and questions about whether he'll meet NCAA freshman eligibility requirements.
Griffin earned first-team All-State honors from The C-L in 2009 - one of just four juniors to do so - as a linebacker/strong safety.
"We had (Tig) Barksdale at running back in Qyen's freshman year, (Nick) Parker his sophomore year and then Parker and (Domonique) Carothers last year," Pogue said. "Qyen filled such a major void on defense last year as a guy who could play the run or the pass. Really, he's an All-State guy on either side of the ball, which gives you an idea of what kind of athlete he is."
So, too, does Griffin's family tree. His brother, Jeramie, was a finalist for Mr. Football in 2006. Jeramie signed with Alabama in '07 but his career was cut short last August by a torn ACL in his left knee.
His scouting report on baby bro?
"I had a lot more speed, but Qyen has a lot more power," Jeramie said. "I can't say who's better. We argue about it all the time."
Those debates are of little significance compared to the main message Qyen hears repeatedly from his older brother.
"I'm always on him about his grades," said Jeramie, who remains in school at Alabama and plans to graduate with a business degree next spring. "I don't want him to have to go through the same things as me. If I had put in more time and work in the classroom, I might have been the valedictorian or something."
According to Pogue, Qyen is progressing academically, a development sure to help his chances of playing big-time college ball. He's yet to receive a Division I scholarship offer.
"Qyen knows he has a lot of work to do, but he's off to a good start in his senior year," Pogue said. "He's got to have a great year (in the classroom) and do a good job in his preparation for the ACT, but it's not out of the question he'll qualify.
"I don't think there's any question Qyen's a top 10 (prospect) in Mississippi. I think folks will see, if they haven't already, that he's an SEC-caliber running back."
Griffin, who indicates he's open-minded when it comes to choosing a college, is appreciative of his early-season success. He first flashed his ball-carrying potential as a 10-year-old competing against Jeramie and his high school friends in their tiny Panola County community of Courtland.
"I think I've surprised a lot of people this year, but I put in the work this summer and my coaches believe in me," Qyen said.
"I'm really close with my brother. We talk all the time. He hasn't seen me play yet this year, but he likes what I'm doing. He reminds me to keep my head on straight and keep staying in my books.
"Since he's not able to play right now, I feel like I'm doing it for both of us. That's more motivation for me."

Trinity/Shiloh

Oh my God was that embarassing or what? Someone should have figured that out and had Aquinas playing Trinity instead. After what Trinity did to that Utah champion last year, I have this feeling that the Texas/Florida/Cal teams are widening the gap with the rest of the country.

The new Allen stadium made SI this week. We're the poster child for football crazed fools for the whole country. It's referenced in that numbers column where they list several interesting numbers for the week; and of course our number is $60 million. Westerberg better figure out how to win some more titles.

Boise State - TCU

Ok you can read my prediction on the Bronco's beating V Tech. But you also know I think the ACC is overrated and will continue to lose to good college teams.
Va Tech has not won an early season game against a ranked team since 2002 when they beat a bad LSU team. LSU and Ala have since blown them out in games.

TCU- First they are not as good as Boise State and they have played twice and lost twice to prove it.

This is a joke that they Ohio State or TX, Okla could play this team to win a national championship. People can scream forever that they would win 9 games in the SEC. They are dreaming. 3-5 conference record...Maybe, I actually think that they would have trouble winning 3 games. The physical toll would be devastating for Boise or TCU.

V Tech would be an Ole Miss type situation, they would be good every 10 or 15 years and respectable every 5 years.
Ole Miss has more current NFL players than V Tech.. 24 to 21.
So the morale of the story is that Boise State may play for an NC for beating a team that would normally finish in the 2nd half of the SEC. And TCU is not as good as Boise St.

J.

Dan Hampton on the Cowboys...

I always thought Hampton was more show than substance. It appears the former Razorback and overrated Bear thinks the same about the Cowboys.

--
In his discussion about the NFC East, Hampton said: "The Cowboys think they are Clint Eastwood; they're more of the Brokeback variety if you know what I'm talking about."
Eastwood is known for being a gritty, tough actor in numerous Western films. "Brokeback Mountain" was a 2005 film about the romantic and sexual relationship between two male Cowboys.
Hampton added: The Cowboys are "one team I would like to buy for their worth and sell for what they think they're worth. Look out. The Giants are going to be back."

Patrick Crayton Trade.

Good! This trade may hurt Dallas for a game or two but it will force them to improve.

My reasoning:
1) Crayton is a club house lawyer, the media likes him because he is willing to talk and sounds half way intelligent. The problem is that he usually is pointing blame somewhere.

2) He cost the Cowboys a probably Super Bowl apperance.
He dropped the pass against the Giants and then quit on a route that Romo was looking for to end that game.

3) Less than average talent. His quickness and speed is much less than the other wr's. Maybe the player they kept. Sam Hurd maybe slower, but at least he appears to have more class and keeps his mouth shut.

4) Most importantly --- Crayton plays the slot.
This is the position Williams and Ogletree should play.
It will change the face of the offense. Williams, like him or not, needs the single coverage with a safety on him to explode. Miles Austin and Dez Bryant will suddenly be stretching the entire field and Williams can out run the safeties if they cheat.

Crayton was very dependable and it slowed the offensive progress with his lack of athletic ability.

LSU - I hate being right.

Lets see if this stuff sounds famaliar.

1. Miles blows clock management at the end of both halves.
1:51 UNC has to punt. LSU gets the ball with 1:04 to end the half.

They run a play with 1:29 3rd down when NC had no time outs.
Fumble. They did not tell the kid to get down.

2. The O Line is pathetic.
3. Offense seems to be incredibly bad. How can Crowton suddenly be terrible?
303 total yards was an improvement until you realize it includes 101 yds on two plays and then 202 for the remaining 54 plays. OUCH.

4. The RB's look horrible... For the record Murphy looks to have lost a step with surgery. Ridley looks the same to me. Average at best without the fumbles.
Why is Ridley carrying anything 19 times. Its like the "fatbacks" from the last two years.

5. LSU Defense can't stop anyone when it matters. Just like before they are pushed around and give up yards.
6. People are blaming the QB and it is a waste of time.
7. LSU looks weak again. That weight program is terrible. They don't look as muscular as the other teams.
8. They win every game with big plays based on talent not schemes.

My first quarter comments in the blog were spot on.
Some of my friends were drinking the coolaid at halftime and seemed to forget it was a bomb, turnovers and punt returns that created the 30-10 lead. Big plays will not happen with SEC talent on defense. NC dominated the Line the entire game.

This is going to be another rough year.
j

LSU 1st Quarter.

After one quarter, I see the same thing I watched the last two years.
LSU is weak on the line of scrimmage.
Slow to react and seem to react instead of attacking.

Why?

Miles and his coaching staff has some how made LSU look average at best.

I hope I am wrong, I still expect them to beat the Tar Hills, but we are in for many many close games.

j

Our alma mater. Navy is ugly.

Watching Airline play in Navy uniforms last night was bad enough.

Then to see North Carolina in the Columbia tonight just reminds me of the
lack of originality in our schools coaching staff.

Navy is for people that can't decide between Black and Blue. Just terrible.
Pick your team of boredom in uniforms with Navy.

I will not even get into the fact that a school with 1600 kids has skill players going both ways during a 5A game. Why? The offense runs a semi-spread, the wide receivers and rb's run on every play then go out and try to play defense. They were dragging after the 1st quarter.
I doubt the coaches even noticed.

Answer this question.
How do they practice at game speed when the 1st team cannot go against the 1st team in practice?

J

Did I mention my thoughts on Houston Nutt.

Ole Miss losing to Jacksonville State makes me want to puke.

Houston Nutt was run off from Arkansas for a reason and today it showed.
Every game is not the same to Nutt. He has frequently over looked teams that are not rivals or a must win.

Ridiculous.

Trouble for the Rangers

Playing .500 ball since July 1, even after all the trades. Lee has back issues, Hamilton/Hobbs has chronic knee issues, Francisco (who I don't like) is on the shelf also. They are going to limp into the playoffs. Hamilton is a concern; 2 cortisone shots this year and it still hurts him to the point where he will be limited in the field in September. I hate to be a pessimist, but I don't see them getting out of the first round, then Lee will be gone, and we've dumped a load of prospects. And, does Daniels pay Hamilton the big bucks with chronic bad knees?

S
