Foster & the Evolution of the NFL

Yesterday's breakout game by Arian Foster, a non-drafted RB who spent last year on the Texan's practice squad, is an example of the continuing trend in the NFL toward the supremacy of the Coach and the QB. The NFL is now so popular and so many great young athletes play football, that the teams are becoming a vast collection of freak athletes all over the field. Most teams can match athlete for athlete at most positions and they are so incredibly fast and strong, that they mostly cancel each other out. The Coach now reigns supreme; witness your posts about Payton. The chase is now all about finding a near-genius coach along with the most rare commodity, a near-genius, video game brain decision maker with the legs and arm of a world class athlete to play QB. There are only a handful now in the NFL who are truly proficient at running these NASA-like offenses. And because the colleges now are still chasing the Vince Young model, there are fewer well-trained QB's coming out. Finding a QB is going to get harder and harder and the good ones will become even more expensive.
