While I am on RB's. Read previous post first.

Only 5 running backs with over 10,000 yards rushing have a per carry average over 4.6 or higher.

1. Jim Brown 5.2
2. Barry Sanders 5.0
3. OJ Simpson 4.7
4. Tiki Barber 4.7
5. Fred Taylor 4.7

Portis-4.6 needs about 300 yards to get in the club.
Joe Perry avgd 5.0 1948-60 for SF, totaled 9723, 25th all time and was leader until Brown and Simpson passed him. He is the only player listed prior to Brown in 1957.

Only 3 in top 25 have averaged less than 4 yards a carry
Eddie George 3.6
John Riggins 3.9
Jerome Bettis 3.9

Bettis is number 5 in total rushing yards and Curtis Martin is 4th with 4.0 yds per carry. What a shame, that the are ahead of the greats in anything.

The increase in games and carries has hurt career yards as a indicator of greatness. Perry, Simpson and Brown are the only people in the top 25 to have a carry prior to 1972 and OJ started in 69.

The Greats.
Brown and Sanders.

A comparison of Brown and Sanders when they had the same amount of carriers.
Brown 12312 yds 5.2, Barry 11725 4.9,- Receiving Brown 2499-Sanders 2327
TDs-Brown 126. Sanders. 91. YDs per game rushing Brown 104.4. Sanders 99.8.
Jim Brown also threw 3 td's.
Brown had a fumble problem. 57 compared to Sanders 41.

Sanders is the best I ever watched. Hopefully history will remember Brown as the best.
