SMU's Pony Express (30 on 30's next Espisode)

30 on 30 is tackling the early 80's SMU football team.
Great story that involves the political hypocrisy in Texas, Big  Money Alumni, Incredible talent and the NCAA's mistake of a Death Penalty to SMU Football.

This was a decision time that killed the Southwest Conference forever and in hindsight doomed the Big 8 and Big 12.

The Story:
Incredible talent on that team with Eric Dickerson and Craig James (best tandem of backs I have ever seen,) Coach Meyer accepts the cheating then leaves in 1981 and goes to the NFL, SMU hires Collins and goes 11-0-1.   (Then SMU gets robbed of a National Title, when it was given to media darling and hypocrite Joe Paterno and Penn State.  Penn State was 11-1 having lost by 21 points to a 4 loss Alabama team.)

I was actually in Texas Stadium for the tie game against Arkansas in 1982.  Controversial game with questionable pass interference and a blocked FG. What a shame neither Eric Dickerson nor Craig James will ever get credit for how great they really were.

I will watch this to see if the NCAA admits publicly the Death Penalty was much to harsh for SMU and also admit that other schools were doing the same things.

The powers of the old UT grads in Austin, did not like the fact that SMU was taking over the Horns spotlight and opened Pandora's box for the NCAA.

One of the great quotes I read from this upcoming show was a player receiving an offer of $10,000 from an SMU booster and saying "coach, that's not even close". And we think Newton went to Auburn for free?
