Mickelson and Why I Watch.

Phil did it again this week. He loses a tournament by a large amount, but puts on a show.
He hits some of the worst shots you will ever see in a tournament, left, right, left.
He then hits shots that only around 10 players in history would have even considered attempting.

I know that a large portion of the PGA and PGA media dislike him, mostly I see stories that he does not hang out with them, is aloof or arrogant and fake. Sour Puss Steve Pate and Vijay question if the smile is real. Five hour rounds and approaching 20 years of stress on national TV would at some point show the change in a person.

The one's that he does let in like Couples, Van Pelt and Dimarco are loyal to a high degree.
I can only say what he acted like when I saw him in person with no media around,
he was smiling and laughing.

For a guy in the top 12 on the All time PGA Win List. He is the most compelling golfer for me to watch. Not the best, but he is on the short list of the greatest that I have seen play. Behind, Jack, Woods, Palmer, and Player. Els is still the biggest waste of talent ever. He was better than Phil.

It's really interesting/amusing to me that you like Mikelson so much. Like you I love to see that incredible God-given talent that a few people have, but I'm so turned off by talented athletes who are essentially their own worst enemy. Mikelson, like Norman, has left so much on the table it's hard to comprehend. Bad decisions, lack of mental toughness, lack of consistency; those things drive me bonkers. The older I get the more I love the athletes that marry talent to mental toughness, stand up to the pressure of expectations, and deliver the goods. Manning, Woods, Phelps, etc. Pressure doesn't seem to faze them. In 20 years I'll remember Phil's talent, but mostly I'll remember a choker who couldn't get it done against people with less talent than him.

Also, to play devil's advocate, you told me that golf is the ultimate gentleman's game, yet you give Phil a pass on doing something outside the 'spirit' of the rules, but technically legal. I don't think that's cool.

Spirit of the game?

Let me reconsider.....
Sudden Muscles Growth, but no blood or hair test.
Balls groomed to the players swings that are not given to everyone or every player, or for sale.
Belly Putters.
Cussing, temper tantrums and showing up the competitors when you do something good?
Running across the green in celebration while play is still on going.
Ignoring the fans and complaining about them.
Allowing computer generated breakdowns of the greens to be used for print outs in the bag.
Lift clean and place.
Did I mention balls made for players swing?

I never expected you to use this comment, especially when you understand the hypocrisy of those who scream.

I brought it up because you told me that golfers are the gentlemen of sports who police themselves, etc. This square groove thing doesn't seem that they are very sportsman-like to me.
